Bahrain prime target for hackers

MANAMA: Bahrain is one of the prime

targets for Iranian computer hackers, a
leading security expert has claimed.
Cyber criminals from Iran and China
have been targeting several organisations
and government entities in the region for
years, said Tom Lockhart.
And it is just a matter of time before
Bahrain is the target of a major cyber
attack, he added.
Bahrain has not faced any major cyber
attack such as the one in 2012 on Saudi
Aramco but eventually it will happen, Mr
Lockhart told the GDN.

By SANDEEP SINGH GREWAL

In a matter of hours 35,000 computers
at Aramco were partially wiped or totally
destroyed, in a cyber attack dubbed the
worlds biggest hack in history.
Bahrain, along with Kuwait and Saudi
Arabia, are prime targets for Iranian hackers seeking to disrupt business and steal
classified data, said Mr Lockhart, who provides consultancy to independent British
specialist security and risk management
firm Le Beck International in Bahrain.
Cyber criminals with links to Iran were

said to be responsible for hacking the

Housing Ministry in 2011 and the GDN
website.
The hackers are targeting websites on a
daily basis to infiltrate servers to get hold of
valuable data, said Mr Lockhart.
They keep using multiple intrusion
methods to discredit firms, disrupt systems
and business activities which can have serious financial and strategic impact.
Investment in new technologies is needed to combat emerging new threats, Mr
Lockhart said.

MANAMA: The Labour Market

Regulatory Authority (LMRA)
has warned the public against
dealing with unlicensed recruitment
agencies. Legal action is being
taken against those violating the
authoritys rules and regulations
that protect the rights of citizens
and residents, LMRA planning and
licensing director Hassan Al Rahma
said. LMRA continues to
receive complaints about illegal
employment offices on a daily basis,
particularly from Bahrainis and
expatriates applying for domestic
workers, he said. He called on
heads of families to only deal with
licensed recruitment agencies,
posted on its official website www.
lmra.gov.bh, which is updated
weekly. A total of 205 employment
offices are registered to date. Of
these, 158 are fully compliant
with LMRAs conditions and
requirements, he pointed out.
Mr Al Rahma urged citizens to file
their complaints in person at the
authoritys headquarters (planning
and licensing offices) and expect a
reply within seven working days.

has been acquitted for lack of
evidence. The three Bahrainis
carried out the theft at night by

GAZA CITY: A Palestinian boy and his sister were

killed in Hamas-controlled Gaza yesterday when
they were hit by fragments from a missile fired by
an Israeli aircraft. Residents of Beit Lahiya in the
northern Gaza Strip said Yassin Abu Khoussa, 10,
died after debris from the explosion hit his home.
His six-year-old sister, Israa, who was seriously
wounded, later died in hospital, a Gaza health

Metina, Avasin, Haftanin and Basyan used by
Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) militants,
the armed forces said. Separately, a bomb blast
blamed on PKK militants hit an armoured
police vehicle near Turkeys border with Iraq
on Friday. Two special force police officers

Gulf Daily News Sunday, 13th March 2016

You may feel like youre on the outside looking in if friends are passionately engaged in a project
that youre not a part of. Though you might feel a little left out, stir yourself into action on the
things that are really crucial to you Pisces. You can always catch up with them another time. For
now, new projects of yours should remain your main consideration.

Making allowances for others is all very well, but over the next few days your beliefs could still clash
with theirs. You may be more inclined to stick up for your perspective than to attempt to see their
point of view. However, with both Mercury and Venus in Pisces, your perspective can tend to be
more fluid, so keep the lines of communication open.

If a friend has been very demanding and youve resented it, this issue could come to the surface
now or over the next day or so. If endless giving seems to lead to even more requests for help, then
you might want to say something. Will you though? Unless youre firm, theres a chance you might
continue to grit your teeth, smile and carry on as you were.

If your work or ambitions have been more important than a key relationship, then a degree of
conflict can show up over coming days. You may notice that this person seems more aloof and less
available - a sure sign that something is wrong. If you care about them enough Gemini, youll need
to prove it to them otherwise this stand-off could become entrenched.

Co-operation is often the best approach. However, if youre the one making all the effort while
another looks on, the atmosphere between you could become more charged. You can resolve this
by setting out your expectations before you make a start. If you dont, then you might find yourself
feeling put upon and increasingly disenchanted, Cancer.

seems that a lot of suicides by guest

workers are because of money owed to loan

sharks in Bahrain.
Mr Sathyan was unfortunate enough to
have borrowed BD200 from one of these
vermin and pay back a whopping BD600 only
in interest over a few months without even
touching the principal.
We need to come down hard on these
sharks who lend money to their fellow countrymen for exorbitant amounts of interest
which are almost impossible to pay back, with
the low salaries that many still are paid for
jobs many locals are unwilling to do.
Maybe the official bodies of these countries could offer loans for minimal interest to
avoid the heartbreaking results we see over
and over again because of the desperation
many go through: Living off next to nothing
(or in the street) in Bahrain, sending minimal
amounts (if any money at all) to families back
home just to feed the sharks snapping at
their heels demanding never ending bigger
amounts for small loans.
Weed out and crack down on loan sharks
and force them to pay back the money
exhorted from poor people (by only allowing
a fair rate of interest). Make sure that many
wont choose to harm themselves and their
families because of the money owed to these
vermin.

With four planets in your opposite sign of Pisces, others may expect you to fit in with their schedule, whether its convenient or not. Indeed, you may try especially hard to do so, but if you have

Mercurys awkward angle to stern Saturn suggests youll need to apply yourself over the next day
or so. And Mercurys location in Pisces could also see you struggle to keep your focus. In addition,
the tension generated by the fervent Venus Mars link could be another reason youre finding it
hard to concentrate - but perhaps for somewhat more sensual reasons!

The planetary picture hints at unexpected costs involved in what should be a straightforward
transaction. If you do decide to enjoy some retail therapy read the small print, and especially on a
more expensive item. And if your sixth sense is trying to tell you something is not quite right, dont
ignore it and ask some searching and pertinent questions.

You may be tempted to give way on a minor issue so you can focus your attention on matters of
greater importance, especially if it would please a loved one. However, if you do, might you be
sending out the wrong message - one which could suggest that youre a pushover? If you want to
get through your to-do list over coming days, dont be too obliging.

While it can be a good idea to keep your options open, around key aims dont deviate from your
intended course. If one project does need firming up consider grappling with this now. There is the
potential for things to drift, and especially if you dont have a set purpose. Even clearing up some
outstanding minor tasks can help you to feel better.

Your ideals and values could clash with those of a friend. Even though you may usually get along
just fine, you might reach a point over the next day or so when youll want to disengage from
them, even if temporarily. Dont feel bad about doing so, as you may need a break from each other
and a chance for some alone time, which could prove healing.

APPRECIATE what you have, before time

Unknown
We all grew up taking everything for
granted (well most of us anyway), and in
these tough times we are slowly realising
how lucky we were. Petrol prices have
risen, electricity and water have become
more expensive and so has meat. The prices for products and services are going up.
Our deficit will hit its limit in half the
time expected and theres nothing we can
do about it. War is all around us, and a rift
in Islam is opening up to be a real chasm
that may soon be irreparable. Arabs and
Muslims are losing respect all around the
world and everywhere I travel to between
Europe and the US I get suspicious looks
where 10 years ago I was welcomed with
open arms.
The walls of the fort are crumbling and
all fingers point in one direction: The government. Oh, government, where art thou?
Fix the deficit, give us back our subsidies,
stop the war, give me a job, and while
youre at it tie my shoes please.
Hundreds of cultures and civilisations
have graced our ancient island and all had
different styles of ruling. We were lucky
enough to have a tribe take over 200
years ago that had the Bedouin nature of
generosity and sharing; which they did
when they could. And nothing reflected
that more than the golden 70s when the
government had enough money to build
a magnificent infrastructure and subsidise
everything from oil to water.
Although some beg to differ, and have
made their opinions clear I can guarantee
that any new form of government will lack
two things: The pedigree to rule, and the
generosity to spread the resources; which
is a model envied around the world.
We have freedom of expression and
religion and no oilrich countries spread
the wealth to their citizens like Bahrain
and the GCC yet our governments are still
under attack. Theres a time and place for
everything, and now is the time for us the
people to support the government. How?
Let me tell you.
Provide stability. Be part of a healthy
society that can debate ideas and agree
to disagree. Pray to your own God and
mind your own business, dont go around
preaching about who killed whom 1,500
years ago. Join a peaceful political party
and join parliament which desperately
needs people with rational modern ideals.
Ignore sick extremist ideologies like IS
or Iran, which aim to conquer the region
and put us under their twisted thumbs.
Only when we unite can we defeat foreign
threats, and help our government guide
our ship back to a safe cove from the
stormy seas.
We need tough security to eliminate any
form of radicalism and allow the middle
ground to mend frayed ties. Religion
should be confined to mosques and
preachers muted. Clerics should keep their
opinions to themselves since Islam was designed as a religion that needs no middle
man. There should be no flag except a red
and white one, but I see black, red, green,
and yellow flags everywhere. Why is that?
We need unity, and anyone divisive needs
to be paid attention to.
I was lucky enough to grow up in the
peaceful eighties and nineties, where
everything was subsidised and peace
reigned in the land, and I would like to
go back to those days, where our generous government covered us with a warm
blanket and allowed us to pray or party as
much as we wanted to.
We still have a lot to be thankful for like
free health, education, no taxes, subsidised wheat, and our petrol is still much
cheaper than abroad, and if we dont hold
on to it and fight to keep it then it could
get worse. You dont know what youve got
until now, its gone, but I for one will fight
with everything I have to keep our gains,
and cling like a pitbull.

n Sixty members and guests attended the second Chaine des Rotisseurs Diner Amical of the year, held at the Sheraton Hotel, Bahrain. The dinner, held under the theme For The Love of Bahrain,
featured a menu using typical Bahraini ingredients. The event was hosted by the international gastronomy associations Bahrain chapter chairman Khalid Almoayed. The first dinner themed
Wellness and Nature was held last month at the Westin Bahrain and the next will be held on March 17 at the InterContinental Regency Bahrain. Above, Mr Almoayed, ffith from left, with guests
at the dinner.

Teenagers on trial
for planting bomb
FOUR Bahraini teenagers have
gone on trial for allegedly planting
a bomb in Al Qurayyah village and
lying in wait to ambush policemen.

The defendants, two aged 15 and two

aged 17, appeared at the High Criminal
Court for the first time and pleaded not
guilty.
They have been accused of placing
the home-made explosive device near Al
Masaniyah Mosque on November 21 last
year and waiting to attack policemen.
However, they could not go through
with their plan once they realised that
the police had tracked down a SIM card

By NOOR ZAHRA
they were going to use to remotely detonate the device.
They took the bomb, made up of a fire
extinguisher fitted with explosives, and
buried it in a nearby graveyard along
with pellet shots and a shotgun which
was used in an earlier attack on police
on Janabiya Highway.
After their arrest, the defendants led
police to the hidden bomb and shotgun.
A detective described how the accused had allegedly monitored police
movements for months before trying to

carry out the terror attack.

I came to know of a group of teenagers who had a bomb that they were planning to detonate in a terrorist attack, the
detective said in his statement.
I then found out that the defendants
had been tracking policemen for months
and had made the explosive device
which they were going to use in an attack in Al Qurayyah village.
However, they were arrested before
they could carry out their plan. They
then led us to the location of the bomb
and the gun, which two of the accused
confessed to previously using to target

police on Janabiya Highway.

One of the defendants, aged 15, described how they had to abandon their
plan after policemen tracked down the
SIM card they were going to use to trigger the bomb.
We wanted to lure policemen to the
bomb and detonate it but after I found
out that police had tracked down the
SIM card we cancelled the plan.
I told my friends to retrieve the bomb
and we hid it in a nearby graveyard.
The trial was adjourned until April 4
for a review.

He underlined co-operation

trafficking and the illicit trade
of narcotics.
Under Bahraini law, convicted traffickers face three years to
life imprisonment.
Moreover, Bahraini law considers drug consumption as a
misdemeanor and stipulates
one month to three years in jail.
Captain Al Merrikhi said that
drug addicts are treated as patients rather than criminals.

BAHRAIN has some of the best

protections for migrant workers
in the Gulf, according to a top International Labour Organisation
(ILO) representative.

The ILO has witnessed a surge in

complaints related to workers rights
in the region, but regional desk officer
at its Arab Region Worker Activities
Bureau Nezam Qahoush said the situation is far better in Bahrain.
He added a meeting of the ILO in
Geneva this week would tackle allegations of unfair treatment in the Gulf.

of alarming reports of forced labour
that we hear in Qatar, the UAE and

The Geneva session of the ILO will
seriously address this issue.

transparency under an office operated alongside the GFBTU (General

The interference he was referring

to centres on the alleged failure to rehire a small number of those who were
among thousands sacked in connection with unrest in 2011.
A total of 4,600 people were dismissed for allegedly failing to show up
for work so that they could take part
in anti-government demonstrations,
getting arrested on suspicion of criminal activities or taking part in strikes
called by trade unionists sympathetic
to the Bahraini opposition movement.
However, some claimed they were
dismissed for no reason.
Labour and Social Development
Minister Jameel Humaidan
has previously announced that
98.94 per cent of such cases
had been successfully resolved,
with only 35 workers yet to be
reinstated.
However,
Mr
Qahoush
claimed 50 such cases were
still outstanding despite tripartite agreements between the Labour and Social Development
Ministry, Bahrain Chamber of
Commerce and Industry and
the GFBTU.
We learn that there are 50
Bahrainis still under the dismissed category of workers and
we support the GFBTUs efforts to reposition them unconditionally, said Mr Qahoush.
He also criticised the lack of
public sector representation in
Bahrains trade union movement.
All 14 members of the
GFBTU board are from the private sector, he said.
We feel there should be
more public sector and female
representation.
This, we feel, is one of the
essential and most vital move
towards freedom of association.
This is not unique to Bahrain, but common to the Arab
region.

Greece vows to fix refugee camp overflow

ATHENS: Greece aims to deal swiftly with
the overflow at the Idomeni migrant camp
on the Macedonian border where some
12,000 people are waiting to cross in miserable conditions, a minister said yesterday.
Some 200 migrants protested against
conditions at the camp yesterday, chanting open the border and sitting on a
cross-border railway line.
And a Syrian refugee began a hunger
strike in response to the situation.
I hope the situation at Idomeni is resolved within a week without recourse
to force, Dimitris Vitsas, the minister
charged with co-ordinating the refugee
flow, told Mega TV.
Conditions in the camp have worsened
since four Balkan countries shut their bor-

ders this week, closing off the main route

to northern Europe trodden by hundreds of
thousands of migrants in the last year.
The measures have left thousands including many children forced to camp out
in increasing squalor amid Europes worst
migration crisis since the Second World War.
Nazim Serhan, a 44-year-old Syrian, began a hunger strike yesterday to highlight
migrants plight at the border.
Serhan, who travelled to Europe along
with his three children in the hope of joining his wife in Germany who is battling
cancer, told journalists: I want to see her,
just for one day.
Vitsas said Athens would try to convince refugees to accept a transfer to other
reception centres across the country.

He added that 400 had done just that

on Friday, moving to centres in northern
Greece.
Figures released by Greek authorities
yesterday estimated some 12,000 people
remained at Idomeni but thousands more
are camped out in fields nearby waiting in
vain for the border to reopen.
Greece is currently hosting more than
42,000 migrants and refugees with around
7,700 on islands in the Aegean Sea. Many
more, most of them fleeing the Syrian conflict, are still undertaking perilous voyages
to reach the islands from Turkey.
According to Vitsas, 50,000 spots will
be available in reception centres across
Greece by the end of next week, some
10,000 more than currently.

Assad removal
still a red line

DAMASCUS: The Syri-

an government yesterday
said the removal of President Bashar Al Assad remains a red line just two
days ahead of renewed
talks aimed at ending the
conflict.

Leading members of the

opposition delegation to the
talks arrived in Geneva yesterday.
The UN-brokered negotiations are the latest push by
the international community
to find a solution to Syrias
five-year war, which has
killed more than 270,000
people.
Both the government and
the main opposition group,
the Riyadh-based High Negotiations Committee, have
agreed to attend the talks after the last round collapsed in
February.
Chief opposition negotiator Mohammad Alloush and
HNC delegation head Asaad
Al Zoabi were in Geneva.
The regime was counting
on the opposition not to come
to Geneva... but it is here, and

n A man rides a bicycle through a devastated part of Homs

it will have a united stance, vision, and negotiating strategy,

said HNC delegation member
Hassan Abdel Azim.
The HNC has repeatedly
called for Assads departure
at the start of any transitional period, but Syrias foreign
minister said that was out of

the question.
We will not talk with anyone who wants to discuss the
presidency... Bashar Al Assad
is a red line, Walid Muallem
told a Damascus news conference.
If they continue with this
approach, theres no reason

for them to come to Geneva,

Muallem said.
He said the government delegation would go to Switzerland
today.
UN peace envoy Staffan de
Mistura said the meetings in
Geneva would not last more
than 10 days.

Syria truce violations to be probed

RIYADH: US and Russian officials were

to meet yesterday on Syrian opposition

charges of truce violations by the regime
but peace talks remain on course, US Secretary of State John Kerry said.
Asked at the end of a visit to Saudi Arabia whether indirect dialogue in Geneva
between the Syrian regime and opposition
could go ahead as planned tomorrow, Kerry said: Yes, it can.
Our teams are meeting today with Russia in both Geneva and Amman, where
very detailed lay downs will take place regarding these allegations and I am requesting a call with Foreign Minister (Sergei)
Lavrov today and we will work through
these and we have been each day, he said
of the opposition complaints.

Air raids by the Syrian regime killed

seven civilians in rebel-held areas of second city Aleppo, according to the Syrian
Observatory for Human Rights.
The Britain-based monitoring group
termed the strikes the most serious violation in the city since the truce came into
effect.
But Kerry, who met Saudi Arabias
King Salman for talks on Syria, said that
perceived violations of the ceasefire that
began on February 27 should not derail the
UN-mediated talks.
The level of violence by all accounts
has been reduced by 80 to 90 per cent,
which is very, very significant. And what
we want to do is continue to work to reduce these.

We believe that the start of talks this

next week in Geneva presents a critical
moment for bringing the political solution
to the table that weve all been waiting for,
even as we extend the humanitarian assistance and continue to try to reduce the violence, he said.
The US State Department said the truce
has produced a dramatic reduction in violence, although it warned that the regime
was still carrying out attacks.
Russia urged the UN to include the
Kurds, who have been a major force in
fighting jihadists such as the Islamic State.
Excluding them would be a most serious infringement of the rights of a large
and significant group living in Syria,
Lavrov said.

The negotiations would

cover the formation of a new
government, a fresh constitution and UN-monitored presidential and parliamentary
elections within 18 months,
the envoy said.
However, Muallem said
De Mistura had no right
to discuss future presidential elections or any agenda
items.
Neither he nor anyone
else, whoever they may be,
has the right to discuss presidential elections, Muallem
insisted.
This right is exclusively
for the Syrian people.
Muallem said the negotiations would aim to form a
unity government which
would then appoint a committee to either write a new
constitution or amend the
current one.
Then we will have a referendum for the Syrian people
to decide on it, he said, adding that a federal division of
Syria was not an option.
The opposition HNC has
also insisted on Syrias territorial unity, but says talks must
create a transitional governance body with full executive powers.
Yesterday, De Mistura told
Swiss newspaper Le Temps
that although Syrias Kurds
were not invited to talks, they
should be given the opportunity to voice their views on
the countrys political future.
Meanwhile, The UNs top
humanitarian officials said
the truce had brought fragile
glimmers of hope to the humanitarian situation in Syria.
Fewer bombs are falling; humanitarian access has
opened up in some places;
negotiators from all sides are
preparing to come together and talk, the aid agency
heads said in statement.

Agony as Kabul
family buries
10 migrants
KABUL: It was Gods will,

says Mohammed Ashraf, a tear

rolling down his weathered
face as he looks at the lifeless
bodies of five male relatives,
brought back to Kabul after
they drowned trying to reach
Europe.
The coffins sit open in the
courtyard of the family home
in Kart-e-Seh, a middle-class
neighbourhood in the Afghan
capital, the bodies of four boys
and one older man wrapped in
black material but their faces
exposed.
One coffin is notably smaller than the others. It belongs to
Faiz, who was just nine months
old when he drowned in the
Aegean Sea last week along
with nine other members of his
family.
You can see that the bodies
are being washed now, says
Ashraf, a cousin of the family,
as half a dozen men tend to the
corpses in an Islamic funeral
rite.
Only men are allowed to
participate in this ceremony
for their male relatives. Two
houses along, the women of the
family are doing the same for
the five women and girls who
drowned on the same crossing
between Turkey and Greece.

Tragedy
Of the members of the Skanderi family who attempted the
voyage, only the father of the
five children who drowned has
survived.
He is in a hospital in Turkey, Ashraf explains. We are
all from the same village, from
the same neighbourhood. We
grew up together, he says as
the tears begin to flow again.
The scene reveals the tragic human story behind statistics from the International
Organisation for Migration
showing that between January
and mid-February alone, 320
people died crossing the Aegean.
More than 130,000 people
have travelled to Greece via
Turkey since the start of the
year, according to the same
group.
Of those, 42,000 are stuck in
Greece, a series of border closures in the Balkans blocking
them from continuing further
into Western Europe.
The Skanderis left Kabul a
month ago and set out on the
now notorious route to Europe
via Iran and Turkey, before
their boat sank on Friday last
week.

North Korea vows to

annihilate enemies
POHANG: North Korea yesterday vowed to
annihilate its enemies as it asserted preparations to fight US and South Korean forces.
The Norths military said it was prepared
to counter the US and South Korean forces
with an ultra-precision blitzkrieg strike of
the Korean style.
The revolutionary armed forces of the
DPRK holding tightly the arms to annihilate
the enemies with towering hatred for them
are waiting for the dignified Supreme Command to issue an order to launch a pre-emptive strike of justice, it said in comments
carried by the state KCNA news agency.
It was in response to US and South Korean troops staging a big amphibious landing
exercise yesterday, storming simulated North
Korean beach defences amid heightened tension and threats by the North.

The landing and assault drills on South

Koreas east coast were part of eight weeks
of joint exercises between the allies which
the South has said are the largest ever. The
North has denounced the exercises as nuclear war moves and threatened to respond
with an all-out offensive.
Tension on the Korean peninsula has been
high since the North conducted its fourth nuclear test in January and followed that with a
long-range rocket launch last month, triggering new UN sanctions.
About 55 US marine aircraft and 30 US
and South Korean ships, including the USS
Bonhomme Richard and USS Boxer, which
carry AV-8B Harrier attack jets and V-22
Osprey aircrafts, took part in the assault on
beaches near Pohang city.
They will penetrate notional enemy beach

defenses, establish a beach head, and rapidly transition forces and sustainment ashore,
the US military based in South Korea said in
a statement before the exercise.
CNN reported yesterday that North Korea
has been searching for one of its submarines
that has been missing for days off its east
coast.
The submarine may be adrift under the
sea or have sunk, perhaps after a technical
problem during an exercise, CNN quoted US
officials with intelligence of secret US monitoring of the Norths activities as saying.
North Korea has said it is developing submarine-launched ballistic missiles although
doubts about that were raised after Western
experts said publicly released footage of tests
appeared to be fake.
On Thursday, North Korean leader Kim
Jong Un watched as his forces
fired two short-range ballistic missiles into the sea. This month the
North conducted drills with what
it said were newly developed large
caliber rocket launchers.

iaomi smartphones
are now available in
Bahrain at Ashrafs.

Across Asia, Xiaomi

smartphones have become a
popular choice for users who
value quality mobile phones at
affordable prices.
The reason why Xiaomi
smartphones have become a
success story in key markets is
fundamentally because of the
popularity of its proprietary Mi
User Interface (MIUI), which
runs on top of Android and
gives users a richer and more
engaging experience when
using their Mi devices.
Xiaomis latest addition to
their ever-expanding smartphone portfolio is a revised,
mid-range edition of the companys flagship Mi 4.
Going around the device,
the power button and volume
rocker are found on the right
side, both within easy reach
and offering good tactile
feedback.
The dual SIM card slot is
found on the left side, with
the headphone jack and
micro-USB port at the top and
bottom, respectively.
Up front, below the display

and above the display is the
five megapixel front-facing
camera and a notification LED
to the right of it.
As is the case with all Xiaomi devices, you can choose
between seven different LED
colours based on notification
type, accessible from the set-

tings menu.
The Mi 4i is both thinner
and lighter than its flagship
namesake, with a thickness
of just 7.8mm and weighing
130gms.
Going beyond what the price
point of this device would
suggest the display proves to
be excellent.

Colour reproduction
is accurate, colour temperatures are neutral
and viewing angles are
fantastic.
Outdoor visibility in
bright sunlight is also
very good, courtesy of
Xiaomis technology
that makes hardware
level adjustments to
improve visibility while
in bright environments.
The device handles
gaming very well and
multi-tasking is also a
breeze.
The MIUI 6 OS is
quite memory-intensive
and it is worked closely
with Qualcomm to
ensure that the device
doesnt overheat.
The Mi 4i comes
with 16 GB of on-board
storage and a standard suite
of connectivity options, with
a dual SIM slot (dual standby)
offering 4G LTE supported
with both.
MIUI is certainly one of
the heavier Android skins,
but does add quite a lot to the
overall software experience.
It allows for a very high

level of control and customisation throughout, something that

isnt easily available with other
Android skins.
Features like lock screen
notifications, heads up notifications, Do Not Disturb and
card style multi-tasking were
all a part of MIUI before the
release of Androids 5.0.2
Lollipop.
In addition to Xiaomis
unique take on those, you
also get access to a robust
theme store, more powerful
data usage management tools,
battery saving profiles that
can automatically be activated
based on the time, application
permissions, in-call recording,
and so much more.
Xiaomi was founded in 2010
by serial entrepreneur Lei Jun,
who believes that high-quality

technology doesnt need to

Xiaomi creates remarkable
hardware, software, and Internet services for and with the
help of their Mi fans.
The company incorporates
their Mi fans feedback into
improving the product range,
which currently includes the
Mi Note, Mi 4i, Redmi 2, Redmi Note 2, Mi Band and other
accessories.
With more than 61 million
handsets sold in 2014, and
products launched in China,
Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines,
India, Indonesia and Brazil,
Xiaomi is expanding its

become a global brand.

New rules urged

for central banks

If we make them welcome, theyll respect our

culture and boost our economy.

NEW DELHI: Reserve Bank of

India governor Raghuram Rajan
yesterday called for global central banks to adopt a system for
assessing the wider impact of their
actions, including unconventional
monetary policies now in use.
Rajan proposed that a group of
academics should measure and analyse the spillover effects of monetary policies and indicate which
should be used and which avoided.
He suggested a traffic light system,
grading policies green, orange or red.
The monitoring system could be

implemented through an international agreement along the lines of

the Bretton Woods currency accord
or via the International Monetary
Fund (IMF).
Rajans speech was the highlight
of a three-day IMF event at which
worries about the global economy
were front and centre.
The international community
has a choice, Rajan said. We can
pretend all is well with the global
financial non-system and hope that
nothing goes spectacularly wrong.
Or we can start building a system
for the integrated world of the
21st century.

China bank lending drops

BEIJING: Chinas bank loans
plunged in February from
January, the central bank said,
despite government efforts to
encourage lending to keep the
worlds second-largest economy
from slowing.
New loans extended by
banks slid to 726.6 billion yuan

China said, a massive drop from

The figure was far below the

survey and analysts.

still far weaker than expected.
Chinas credit expansion
slowed significantly in February,
even after considering the Lunar
New Year effect, analyst Zhao
Yang of Nomura said in a note.
Weak credit growth suggests
that housing market transactions
may have slowed and that corporate investment continued to
soften.
He added that credit expansion
may rebound in March due to
seasonal factors.

Riffa Views experience praised

MANAMA: Riffa Views managing director
Yasser Abdulrahman Al Raee received a
delegation from the Ajman Real Estate
Regulatory Authority (ARRA), led by executive director Yafea bin Eid Faraj.
The visit aimed to learn about the experience of Riffa Views as a successful model
in reaching a consensual action plan to
complete the project.
Mr Al Raee highlighted the implementation stages of the project, including the
first phase which started in 2006, and the
last regarding the completion of the Parks
Estate.
He reviewed with them the Riffa Views
experience in establishing an elected homeowners association. He said that the res-

idents had elected their representatives in

the panel directly in two elections, held in
2012 and 2014, noting that members of the
association are in charge of all services and
facilities in the complex, which, he said, is
the first experience of its kind in similar
projects in Bahrain.
Mr Al Raee said that since the first batch
of villas was delivered to owners in 2008,
and until 2012, the project developer used
to bear the expenses of management and
provision of services, and fees on those
services used to be collected directly from
owners.
In 2010, the project developer established
an advisory board comprising villa owners,
as a means to gradually introduce and acti-

vate the idea of the owners association.

The ARRA delegation expressed admiration for the advanced level of the complex,
and praised the action plan that had been
reached to complete such a vital project.
Riffa Views is among the most prestigious residential complexes in Bahrain
committed to the highest luxury standards
through its unique three residential estates,
the Lagoons, the Oasis and Parks, each
individually themed and including multiple
facilities and wide open spaces.
They overlook green spaces in which golf
is practised.
Riffa Views not only provides a luxurious
lifestyle, but also ensures all requirements
of living in a flourishing district.

n The Industrial sector committee of Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry chaired by Abdulhameed Al Kooheji held
a meeting with officials from the Industry, Commerce and Tourism Ministry headed by assistant under-secretary of domestic
trade Hammed Rahma. It discussed measures by the ministry in preparation to implement the International Standard Industrial
Classification of All Economic Activities, Rev.4 (ISIC4).

HILMY CADER

espite the hype surrounding strategic

planning and its direct
correlation to business
success, many fail to plan
effectively and instead hope
that everything will simply
work out for the best.
The fear of the unknown has
been cited as the main reason that creates this sense
of trepidation in adopting
and implementing a suitable strategic plan for the
company.
In fact, Mckinsey and
Company, in a survey
of nearly 800 executives
across the globe stated
that approximately 55 per
cent of respondents were
dissatisfied with the strategic planning process.
Moreover, only 23pc indicated that major strategic
decisions were made within
its confines!
Thus, it is time that all top
management and executives alike put on their
thinking caps to comprehend the key ingredients
behind an all-encompassing strategic plan.
A well-crafted strategic plan
will encompass the following factors that will provide
the direction for an organisation for a period ranging
from three to five years:
1. The dynamic micro and
macro elements surrounding a business.
2. Strengths, weaknesses,
opportunities and threats.
3. A core-competency analysis.
4. A clean slate analysis of
the current business model
in the context of future
changes in the business
environment.
5. A clear indication of what
needs to be done in order to achieve business
success given the above
analysis.
6. Business and operational
strategies in the context
of the strategic direction
and day-to-day operational
challenges.
While it is important to understand that theres no
one formula for strategic
planning, there are steps or
procedures that one could
adopt to enhance the value
of the strategic planning
process.
MTI has developed a 8s model which is a robust framework that has been used
in more than 25 countries,
across diverse industries.
This framework starts with
identifying the scope of
the business, scanning the
operating environment,
setting the sights for the
business and formulating
strategies that extend to
systems, structure, social
responsibility and staff.
As Jack Canfield once said
people make their own
luck by great preparation
and good strategy.
So what are we waiting for,
lets strategise for a brighter tomorrow.

Mr Cader is the chief

executive of MTI Consulting

NEW YORK: Investors who

have pushed the US stock market higher over the past month
will be taking their cues about
the pace of future interest rate
increases next week from the
Federal Reserve.
Recent economic data has
relieved concerns that the US
might be heading for a recession
and helped fuel the benchmark
S&P 500 indexs 11 per cent recovery since mid-February.
But evidence of improving domestic conditions could
also prod the Fed to speed up
planned rate increases and
thereby potentially dampen enthusiasm for stocks.
In its statement following
a two-day policy meeting on
Wednesday, the central bank is
widely expected to hold its key
rate steady after raising it in December for the first time in nearly a decade, while economists

expect an increase by the end

of June and one more before the
year is out.
Its going to be a session
with parsing individual words in
the statement about how likely
the market believes the Fed is
to move, how quickly they are
going to move for the next increase, said Greenwood Capital Associates chief investment
officer Walter Todd.
Should the
Fed give any
hints it will get
more aggressive
on rate increases than the mar
market projects, it could blunt the
momentum for stocks.
While investors may be betting on one increase for the
rest of the year, Todd said, the
Fed in its last statement made it
pretty clear that they want to go
more than that.
Traders are discounting any

change in rates when the Fed

meets next week, according to
the CME Group FedWatch tool.
Everybody has planned accordingly for no action, so if
there is an action I think that
would have a negative effect on
the market, said Meridian Equity Partners senior managing
partner Jonathan Corpina.
The Fed has kept interest
rates at near zero for virtually
all of the current
bull market for
stocks, which
marked its seven-year anniversary on Wednes
Wednesday.
More recently, the outperformance of consumer discretionary stocks over the consumer
staples sector over the past
month is evidence of investors
betting on the Fed keeping rates
unchanged for now, according
to S&P Capital IQ.

The equity risk switch has

been in the on position for the
past few weeks, S&P Capital
IQ said in a report.
With the S&P tracking to its
fourth straight positive week,
the index is now off only about
1.5pc for the year. So far in
March, every S&P sector has
posted gains, led by energy
shares.
In recent months, stocks generally have correlated tightly
with fluctuations in depressed
oil prices, so the run of US
crude into positive territory for
2016 and back to around $40 a
barrel has been a key factor in
the stock markets bounce.
The stabilising of other commodity markets and easing of
concerns over Chinas economy
has also buoyed stocks along
with better-than-expected US
data.
Next week will bring additional readings on the health of
the US economy, including reports on retail sales, housing and
industrial production.
The stock market rallied
because we got evidence that
were not recessing and we
were pricing in a recession,
said Wells Capital Management
chief investment officer Jim
Paulsen.
But ultimately, Paulsen
said, if the US economy is OK,
rates are going to be an issue.

Harden stars in
Rockets victory
LOS

ANGELES:

James
Harden
scored 32 points
and
Dwight
Howard added 12 points
and 12 rebounds to spark
the Houston Rockets past
Boston 102-98 on Friday,
snapping the Celtics 14game NBA home win
streak.

n Rockets
Harden, No. 13,
goes up for a
shot

Five days after halting Torontos 12-game home win

streak, the Rockets ended
the longest Boston home
victory run since a franchise-record 18-game streak
in 1990-91.
At 33-32, the Rockets are
level with Dallas for the last
two Western Conference
playoff spots while the Celtics stumbled to 39-27, third
in the Eastern Conference.
Its getting there, said
Harden, who is averaging
34.5 points a game over Houstons
past 13 starts. We have one more
game to finish the road trip off the
right way.
The Rockets visit Charlotte today,
trying to snap the teams longest win
streak in six seasons, which rose to
six games with a 118-103 Hornets
home win over Detroit.
Boston had not lost at home since
January 6.
We didnt really know what it
felt like, Celtics star Isaiah Thomas
said. It was tough getting that feeling again especially at home. I feel
like we let our fans down.
The Hornets improved to 36-28
and stayed fifth overall in the Eastern
Conference. Marvin Williams scored
22 points and Frenchman Nicolas
Batum added 17 points and 11 assists
for Charlotte.

It feels good, but in this league

its all about tomorrow, said Hornets coach Steve Clifford. Weve
got to watch the film and figure out
what weve got to do better. Thats
how we all have to think. I just told
them, two or three teams at this time
of year are going to get better. It happens every year. Two or three teams
are going to get better and win a
playoff series or two.

Combining
With both teams combining for
a record 37 3-point baskets in one
game, the defending champion Golden State Warriors beat visiting Portland 128-112, running the champs
home win streak to 47 games.
Klay Thompson scored a gamehigh 37 points with 8-of-11 success
from 3-point range while reigning

Red Star inch closer

to Euro playoff berth
BELGRADE: Serbian cham-

pions Red Star Belgrade

closed in on a Euroleague
playoff berth with a dramatic 69-67 win over Panathinaikos
and Barcelona also boosted their
hopes with a 100-98 overtime
home defeat of CSKA Moscow
late on Friday.
Holders Real Madrid stayed on
course to reach the last eight after former Chicago Bulls forward
Andres Nocioni helped them to a
90-75 win at Zalgiris Kaunas.
Roared on by a frenetic 20,000
crowd in Belgrades Kombank
Arena, Red Star prevailed in a
physical roller coaster as their
American shooting guard Tarence
Kinsey scored 19 points.
His compatriot Quincy Miller
added 16 and five rebounds, including a crucial late three-point
play when he converted a free
throw after he was fouled while
nailing a slam-dunk.
Red Star trailed by eight points
in a low-scoring first period and
then turned the match with a strong
third quarter before Panathinaikos
conjured a 13-0 run to tie the score
at 55-55 with five minutes left.
Kinsey, who had his ribcage
bandaged in the second-half after
a collision with an opponent, sank

a pair of jump-shots to restore Red

Stars lead before Miller added the
finishing touch.
The result left Red Star third
in their Top 16 section with a
6-4 record and a good chance of
reaching the knockout stages of
Europes premier club competition
for the first time.
Barcelona improved to 5-5 after
American forward Justin Doellman scored five points in the last
eight seconds of the game to stun
CSKA and claw out a potentially
priceless win for the Catalan side.

Chasing
Real, who are chasing a record-extending 10th title, made
light work of 1999 champions Zalgiris after trailing 17-13 at the end
of the first quarter.
Argentine stalwart Nocioni led
the champions with 22 points and
seven rebounds.
He was unstoppable from beyond
the arc, nailing six three-pointers
from as many attempts.
The Top 16 features two pools
of eight teams each, with the top
four from each section advancing
to the best-of-five quarter-final
playoff series.
The winners qualify for the May
13 to 15 Final Four in Berlin.

NBA Most Valuable Player Stephen

Curry hit 7-of-14 3-pointers on his
way to 34 points. In all, the Warriors
made 18-of-40 3-point shots while
the Trail Blazers, led by C.J. McCollums 18 points, made 19-of-36
3-pointers.
Goran Dragic scored a game-high
25 points and added nine assists
to power Miami (38-27) over the
short-handed host Chicago Bulls
118-96. The Bulls (32-32) were
without injured starting guards Jimmy Butler, out with a knee sprain,
and Derrick Rose, sidelined by a
groin strain.
Senegalese forward Gorgui Dieng
scored 25 points to lead the Minnesota Timberwolves to a 99-96 victory
at Oklahoma City. Andrew Wiggins
scored 20 points and Ricky Rubio
posted 12 assists and 13 points, including the game-winning 3-pointer
as the Timberwolves improved to 2145. Kevin Durant scored 28 points
for the Thunder (44-21) while Russell Westbrook added 26 points and
eight assists.
At Philadelphia, the host 76ers
snapped a 13-game losing streak
with a 95-89 victory over Brooklyn.
It seems like forever, centre
Nerlens Noel said of the gap since
the 76ers most recent prior win, also
over the Nets back on February 6.
On the same day the 76ers announced rookie centre Jahlil Okafor
will miss the remainder of the season
for knee surgery, Philadelphia lost
three players to injury in the third
quarter, including starting forwards
Robert Covington and Jerami Grant
on the same play. Covington was
strapped to a backboard and taken
to a hospital for neck injury worries.
Grant suffered a possible concussion.
I thought there was grit, 76ers
coach Brett Brown said.
I thought there was fight. There
was no back-down.
Lance Stephenson scored a career-high 33 points and Matt Barnes
added 26 points, 11 rebounds and 10
assists to lead injury-depleted Memphis to a 121-114 overtime victory
over visiting New Orleans.
Shelvin Mack scored a career-high
27 points on 11-of-17 shooting to lift
Utah over visiting Washington 11493 while Chris Paul scored 24 points
to lead the Los Angeles Clippers in
a 101-94 victory over visiting New
York.
At Sacramento, Orlandos Aaron
Gordon had 20 points and 11 rebounds as the Magic beat the host
Kings 107-100.

Mahmood-Thani
pair reach final
By MAZIN RIZK

AHMED Al Mahmood
and Abdulrahman Al
Thani booked their berth
in the final of the mens
doubles division at the BTC Tennis
Tournament 2016 held yesterday at
the Bahrain Tennis Club in Juffair.

Al Mahmood and Al Thani kept their

unbeaten record by registering a victory against Mohammed Al Mosawi and
Hussain Al Mosawi 6-3, 7-6.
Al Mahmood and Al Thani, who are
participating in this tournament for the
first time as a doubles team, go into the
final undefeated. Likewise, they have
not yet dropped a single set so far.
Their previous matches saw them defeat Hussain Al Mukharraq and Matar
Yousif 7-5, 6-4. The duo racked up their
second win against Yousif Khonji and
Ibrahim Fathalla 6-4, 6-0 before getting
through Ahmed Kayed and Khalid Janahi 7-6, 6-3 to qualify for the semi-final.
Al Mahmood expressed his excitement about reaching his first ever final
in the tournament.

n Al Thani, left, and Al Mahmood

Im happy and satisfied with my performance and Ill try my best to win the
game today, said 24 year-old Al Mahmood.
He admitted that the strength of his
opponents was a big challenge for him.
I focus a lot on the mental elements

more than the physical because Im

playing against tough opponents as they
are much more experienced. I concentrate on my mental strength to win the
matches instead of looking how to hit
the ball hard, he added.
The duo practised together to develop

their chemistry prior to their participation in the tournament.

Al Thani also spoke about todays final:
I think it will be a tough match today. Our
opponents are tough and will give us a big
fight for the title. They have more experience because of the age difference.
We have to take the first set. It is very
important, if we do that we can control
the match, 28-year-old Al Thani said.
The second semi-final saw Naji Al
Samahiji and Ahmed Omran come from
behind to beat Mohammed Khonji and
Isa Al Sammak 2-6, 6-4, 10-7.
Al Samahiji said they will give their
best performance to win the title.
The mens doubles final will be
played today at the Bahrain Tennis Club
at 6.15pm.
In the mens super doubles semi-final, Salman Hassan and Naser Khonji
defeated Nabil Dawani and Ali Dawani
6-4, 6-1 to set up a final showdown with
Ali Al Asfoor and Roy Boutagy who
downed Mahmood Janahi and Abdulrahman Janahi 6-2, 6-3.
The final will start at 7pm at the club
premises in Juffair.

Norwich reduce
City title hopes
Gulf Daily News Sunday, 13th March 2016

Email: sport@gdn.com.bh

LONDON: Manches-

ter Citys faltering

Premier League title
bid sustained another
blow yesterday as a 0-0 draw
at Norwich City left Manuel
Pellegrinis side nine points
below leaders Leicester City.

Victory would have taken

City above Arsenal into third
place, but instead they remain
fourth, only two points above
fifth-placed West Ham United,
with Manchester United two
points further back.
Pellegrini paired Sergio Aguero with Wilfried Bony in attack,
but it was Norwich who came
closest to scoring when on-loan
Chelsea striker Patrick Bamford
rattled the crossbar from 25 yards
shortly before half-time.
We are disappointed, said
Pellegrini, whose side take a 3-1
lead into the home leg of their
Champions League last 16 tie
with Dynamo Kiev on Tuesday
before visiting Manchester United in the derby next weekend.
We tried to be aggressive with
and without the ball. We had a
good attitude, but we could not
create space. Of course we should
create more in the last third. We
were static up front.
Every time that you drop
points it is harder, but you must
continue thinking in a positive
way. We must always try to win
the title while we mathematically can.
Norwich have taken just two
points from a possible 30, but
although the result kept them
in the relegation zone, manager
Alex Neil took heart from his
teams battling display.
We will see at the end of the

season how significant that point

was, said the Scot. I couldnt
ask any more from our players in
terms of effort and endeavour.
Last time Norwich got relegated (in 2014) they were five
points above the relegation zone
with seven games to play, so
theres no reason why we cant
catch some of those above us.
Italian striker Graziano
Pelle ended a 13-game scoring

Premiership

drought with a double as Southampton stole a march on Stoke

City in the race for European
qualification with a 2-1 win at
the Britannia Stadium.
Pelle headed home from a
Steven Davis corner and then
saw a tame shot beat Stoke
goalkeeper Jack Butland, before
Marko Arnautovic reduced the
arrears early in the second half.
Southampton substitute Sa-

dio Mane was harshly sent off

in stoppage time following an
aerial challenge on Erik Pieters.
Meanwhile, Steve Cook
headed in a 78th-minute winner as Bournemouth won 3-2 at
home to fellow relegation battlers Swansea City to move 13
points clear of the bottom three.
Bournemouth twice went
ahead, through Max Gradel and
Josh King, only for Swansea to

smashed home his 36th goal of
the season all before half-time.
Neymar and Arda Turan
rounded off the scoring to seal
Barcas 12th straight La Liga
win after the break.
A 37th consecutive game
without defeat opens up an eightpoint lead for Barcelona on second-placed Atletico, who toppled
Deportivo 3-0 later in the day.
Real Madrid are now 15
points adrift of Barca in third
ahead of their trip to Las Palmas today.
An eighth defeat in nine
games leaves Getafe just a point
above the relegation zone.
The European champions
werent at full strength as coach
Luis Enrique left Luis Suarez on
the bench ahead of Barcas return to Champions League action
against Arsenal on Wednesday.
Yet, the hosts still only took
seven minutes to break the
deadlock as Jordi Albas driven cross towards Messi was
scooped into the far corner of
his own net by Rodriguez.
Barcas one fallibility this
season was exposed moments later when Neymar was
chopped down by Emiliano
Velzquez inside the area.
Messi took responsiblity, but
for the ninth time in 20 spotkicks Barca failed to convert as
Guaita dived to his left to turn
the five-time World Player of
the Years effort to safety.
Guaitas intervention kept
Getafe in the game for just a
further nine minutes as Messi directed Andres Iniestas
through ball onto El Haddadis
head for the second.
Gerard Pique then hit the bar
as Getafe failed to contain the
waves of Barca attack.

England pip Wales to close in on title

LONDON: England survived a terrific late

Welsh surge to put one hand on their first

Six Nations title for five years as an Anthony Watson try and 20 points for Owen
Farrell helped them beat Wales 25-21 at Twickenham yesterday to send them into their final game in
France on course for a first grand slam since 2003.
Englands massive points advantage over
France, who visit Scotland today, means even a
heavy defeat in Paris would be unlikely to deprive
them of the tile following four successive second
place finishes under Stuart Lancaster.
With Wales due to host Italy in their final match,
yesterdays Twickenham showdown was effectively a title decider not to mention a chance for
some sort of England revenge for their World Cup
defeat in September. Yet it was one way traffic
from the start as Watsons try and four penalties
had them 19-0 ahead 15 minutes into the second
period as Wales barely got out of their own half.
A chargedown try by Dan Biggar got the visitors on the board but England still looked com-

fortable until Wales burst into life with late tries by

George North and Taulupe Faletau to revive memories of their stunning World Cup comeback but
this time England held out.

Earlier, title holders Ireland rediscovered their

form to record their first victory of this years
championship, running in nine tries to thrash Italy
58-15 and end a frustrating run of results.
Ireland were already too far behind leaders England to retain their title and win an unprecedented
third successive Six Nations outright but a ruthless
display nevertheless handed Joe Schmidts injury-hit side a much needed confidence boost.
From the off you could see the intensity and pace
we wanted to play at. We put a lot of the silly mistakes
weve made in the championship right today, Ireland
captain Rory Best said in a pitchside interview.
A dreadful mistake from Italy wing Leonardo Sarto, slapping a dinked Johnny Sexton kick back into
open space, handed Ireland possession metres from
the line to allow winger Andrew Trimble to open the
scoring. It also handed over momentum that bottomof-the-table Italy found impossible to win back.
An Irish attack that had managed just two tries
in their opening three games matched that paltry
total after just 15 minutes when prop Jack McGrath
crashed over following concerted pressure.
Edoardo Padovani got Italy
on the board with a penalty but
there was to be no repeat of Octobers World Cup clash when a
dogged Italian side ran Ireland
close as another free-flowing
move culminated in flanker CJ
Standers first international try.
Ireland saved their best for the
last attack of the half and lodged
a contender for try of the tournament with a length-of-the-field
break that began with a reverse
Simon Zebo pass and ended in
Jamie Heaslips arms after some
inch perfect offloading.

Afghans barge
into main draw
NEW DELHI: Afghanistan roared into the
main draw of the World Twenty20 with an
emphatic 59-run victory over Zimbabwe
in a first round Group B match yesterday.

Mohammad Shahzad (40) gave Afghanistan a flying start before Mohammad Nabi (52) and Samiullah
Shenwari (43) added 98 runs off 64 balls to power
them to 186-6, their highest total in this format.
The associate nation then returned to bowl out Zimbabwe for 127 to register a memorable victory over a
full-member nation and join England, South Africa,
West Indies and Sri Lanka in Group One of the Super
10 stage of the tournament.
Later yesterday, Scotland registered their first victory in
an International Cricket Council (ICC) event when they
beat Hong Kong by eight wickets
via Duckworth-Lewis method in
a rain-shortened contest. The outcome had no real consequence on
the tournament as both teams had
already crashed out of contention
for a place in the main draw.
This was a very important
match for us. People in Afghanistan are crazy about cricket.
They love the game, so (winning it) was very important
for us, victorious captain Asghar Stanikzai said.
With a place in the main draw at stake, Stanikzai opted to bat and was vindicated as Shahzad set alight Nagpurs VCA Stadium with his swashbuckling batting.
The portly 28-year-old hit Tendai Chatara for four
successive boundaries after a quiet opening over, forcing the pacer off attack. Donald Tiripano was pressed
into service but there was no respite from Shahzad who
hit him for three successive fours.
Shahzad greeted left-arm spinner Sean Williams by
hitting his first delivery for a six but fell in the same
over after a 23-ball blitz attempting a reverse sweep.

stan, cruising at 49 for no loss in the fifth over, slumped

Shenwari to first steady the innings before accelerating.
l South Africa defeated hosts India by four runs in
their World Twenty20 warm-up match in Mumbai yesterday after England had earlier beaten New Zealand
by six wickets.
The Proteas won the toss and opted to bat, going on
to make 196 for eight in their 20 overs at the western
Indian citys Wankhede Stadium.
JP Duminy top-scored for South Africa, hitting 67
off 44 balls. His impressive knock included six fours

and three sixes.

In the days earlier game, New Zealand won the
toss and elected to bat with captain Kane Williamson
smashing a 63.
Williamsons knock included nine fours as the Black
Caps made 169 for eight in their 20 overs..

Australia pin hopes on vast IPL experience

KOLKATA:
Skipper
Steve Smith said yesterday that Australia were
determined to break their
World T20 hoodoo, saying his
teams vast experience of playing in the Indian Premier League
would give them a definite edge.
Five-time World Cup champions Australia have been under-performers in the shortest
format and their best showing
in the tournament has been the
runners-up finish in 2010 when
they lost the final to England.

31

Traditionally we havent
done as well as we would have
liked in this format of the game.
This is a tournament that has
eluded us so we are here to try
and win it, Smith told reporters in Kolkata at Australias
opening Press conference of the
16-team tournament.
We feel pretty settled, we
have 15 guys who can give
this tournament a pretty good
shake, he added.
Smith, who leads the team
in all the three formats, said

they will be banking on their

all-rounders who have recently
performed well.
He said inclusion of debutant
leg-spinner Adam Zampa in
the squad will boost the teams
bowling department on slow
Indian tracks.
The 26-year-old skipper said
his team will adapt to the conditions quickly and will fully
utilise the Indian experience to
win the cup.
We know what to expect
from the conditions over here,

a lot of us have played here before, either in IPL or against India so we know what to expect
and were ready for the challenge, the skipper said.
Smith and five of his teammates in the World T20 squad
are part of the various IPL franchises and their familiarity with
Indian pitches will auger well
for them.
Coming into the sixth edition
of the tournament at the back
of a 2-1 T20 series win against
South Africa, the fifth-ranked

side will play New Zealand in

their opener on Friday.
Australia will play favourites India on March 27 and
Smith insisted that there is no
added pressure on the side that
recently lost the T20 series 0-3
against the MS Dhoni-led side.
I dont think there is any
pressure. I think playing a
world cup...playing in international cricket, there is always
lots of pressure. So for us its
taking each game at a time, he
said.

Lin clinches
All-England
final berth
BIRMINGHAM, England:

Chinas Lin Dan will attempt to become only the

fourth player to win six
All-England
Championship
mens singles titles after beating Xue Song yesterday to secure his berth in the final.
Fifth-seeded Lin came from a
game down for the third match in
succession to beat younger compatriot Xue 18-21 21-15 21-9.
In the last few matches I
have made mistakes but I was
really pleased how I came
back, said 32-year-old Lin,
who last reached the All-England final in 2012.
The balance shifted when
Lin directed a smash at Xues
body in the second game,
which seemed to resurrect the
double Olympic champion.
Xue, the 22-year-old who ousted holder Chen Long in the last
16, was forced to stop for cramp
in the decider, before Lin raced to
the finish line after 88 minutes.
In the final, Lin will face
compatriot Tian Houwei, the
eighth seed, who overcame
surprise semi-finalist, Hans Vittinghus, the unseeded Dane, by
15-21, 21-14, 21-14.
Should Lin triumph, he will
join Irelands Frank Devlin,
Denmarks Erland Kops and Indonesias Rudy Hartono as the
only players with six or more
titles.
In the womens singles,
Wang Shixian, who won the
first of her two titles in 2011,
overcame Tai Tzu Ying of
Taiwan 21-23 21-12 21-15 to
reach her first All-England final
for two years.
Wang will meet Nozomi

from becoming the first Japanese champion in the womens
singles since 1977 after ousting Carolina Marin, the world
champion and title holder 11-21

Sharapova slams wrong media reports in doping case

LOS ANGELES: Five-times
Grand Slam tennis champion Maria Sharapova hit
out at some media accounts
of her doping case that she termed
wrong in an open letter to her fans
on Facebook on Friday.
Sharapova, who tested positive for

the banned drug meldonium at the

Australian Open in January, is facing
a suspension of up to four years by the
International Tennis Federation (ITF)
and has already lost numerous sponsorships in the aftermath.
The former world number one
thanked her fans for their tremendous

outpouring of support before launching into a critique of what she believed

were some inaccurate reports.
A report said that I had been
warned five times about the upcoming
ban on the medicine I was taking. That
is not true and it never happened,
Sharapova wrote.

The 28-year-old Russian said she was

making no excuses for not knowing
about the ban that went into effect on
January 1, but said that after the first announcement, other notices were buried
in newsletters, websites, or handouts.
Again, no excuses, but its wrong
to say I was warned five times, said

Sharapova, who has said she took the

drug for 10 years due to a family history of heart issues and diabetes.
The World Anti-Doping Agency
(Wada) added meldonium to their
banned substance list after concluding
that it improves blood flow and boosts
exercise capacity.

LIVERPOOL: Romelu Lukaku scored two goals for

GLASGOW: Celtic survived a

nervy finish as they ended a twogame winless run in the Scottish

Premiership with a 2-1 win over
Partick Thistle at Firhill yesterday.
The home side were without a
victory against Celtic since 1995 but
they held out against the Hoops until
the 45th minute when Leigh Griffiths
sent a shot on the turn past Tomas
Cerny for his 35th goal of the season.
Celtic added another in the 54th

The highly-regarded 42-year-old

Either way, referee Michael

a second yellow card offence,
surprisingly the first time he

The defeat meant caretaker

Pakistan arrive in Kolkata for World T20 clash

KOLKATA: Cleared by their government after

days of uncertainty over their participation, the

Pakistani contingent arrived in India yesterday
evening to take part in the World Twenty20
World Cup.
The 27-member Pakistan cricket contingent arrived
in the city from Abu Dhabi, finally ending days of suspension over their participation in the mega event.
The Pakistan contingent comprising 15 players, 12
officials and support staff reached the Netaji Subhas
Chandra Bose International Airport at 7:55pm local time
amid tight security after the Pakistan government finally
gave their cricket board the green signal to fly to India.
Hundreds of fans gathered at the airport to welcome
the Pakistan team as Shahid Afridi and his players
came out of the airport. The Pakistani skipper reciprocated the warm gestures, waving at the crowd before
leading his team-mates into two buses as they went
straight to the team hotel.

their immigration formalities before they finally came out

There were tight security arrangements for the Pakistani contingent with hundreds of security personnel
from CISF and black commandos maintaining a vigil
as the players landed at the airport.

The Pakistan contingent includes manager Intikhab

Alam, the experienced former Test captain and a high
profile security manager.
Due to the delay in their arrival, the Pakistan team
missed out on a warm-up match against Bengal which
was scheduled for Friday. They will now play a practice game against Sri Lanka here tomorrow.
Their first match of the main tournament will be held
at Eden Gardens on March 16 against a qualifier team,
followed by the marquee clash against arch-rival India
at the same venue on March 19.
They will then take on New Zealand (March 22)
and Australia (March 25) in their remaining Group B
matches both in Mohali.
The Pakistan team was to fly out on Wednesday but
the government put their departure on hold, citing security concerns. On Thursday, Interior Minister Nisar
Ali Khan ruled out sending the team until special security assurances were met from India. The matter was
solved following security assurances from the Indian
government. Afghanistan reach main draw Page 30
