Callum the Caterpillar

Before you watch
Draw a butterfly on the board and elicit or present
the word. Draw 9 lines in a row below the picture
and play Hangman, eliciting letters to spell the
word. Introduce caterpillar in the same way.
While you watch
Pause at the kitchen scene. Tell the students to count
the number of caterpillars in the scene. Invite students
to name the foods they can see in the fridge.
After you watch
Play Pictionary. Divide the class into two teams. Slowly
start to draw a cake on the board and say: Whats this?
Invite students to put their hands up to guess. When
a student guesses correctly, award a point to her/his
team. Then repeat with drawings of other words from
the story (a butterfly, a fridge, feet, a tree, cheese).
Using the worksheets

Worksheet 1
1 Look in the fridges and tick (3) the food you
can see.
Ask the class to look at the first fridge and elicit the
names of the foods. Write apples and cheese on
the board and ask Are there apples in the fridge?
Elicit the answer yes and tick the box next to apples,
then ask Is there any cheese in the fridge? Elicit
the answer no and put a cross in the box. Tell the
students to complete the activity, ticking the foods
they see in each fridge.
2 Draw the next food in the sequence and write.
Chant the foods in the first row and ask the students
to chant with you. Hold up the worksheet, point to
the box and ask students to suggest the next word
in the sequence (apple). Tell the students to draw
an apple in the box and write the word below.
Students then complete the other sequences.
Worksheet 2
1 Find and circle the words.
Tell the students to look at the six pictures and
words and try to find and circle those words in the
word search.

Teacher's Notes
2 Read the song and match.

Write Stamp your feet! on the board and ask a
student to come to the front to demonstrate. Then
tell the students to match the phrase to the picture
of the fairy stamping her feet. Students match the
other lines from the rhyme to the correct picture.
Worksheet 3
1 Make a butterfly life cycle wheel.
Draw an egg on the board, then an arrow leading
to a caterpillar, an arrow leading to a cocoon
and an arrow leading to a butterfly. Point to each
picture and explain the stages in a butterflys
life, noting the words as you go: egg, caterpillar,
cocoon, butterfly.
Ask the students to colour the 4 pictures, cut
them out and stick them into the butterfly wheel
according to shape. Then ask them to cut out the
2 circles, make holes in the centre and fix them
with a split pin.

Mole at the Seaside

Brainstorm sea and country
animals. Write them up on the
board in two categories.
Show the book cover and
introduce the word mole. Elicit
what the children know about
moles and explain some simple
facts about them:
They are about 15 centimetres
long and have grey or black fur.
They have strong front paws,
which they use to dig tunnels
under the ground. They often
push a lot of the earth they dig up
to the surface and make piles of
earth called molehills.
They live in the tunnels and rarely
come out to the surface.
They eat worms and insects.
While you read

Number work:
Look at the pictures and practise
counting. For example: count the
seagulls on page 4. Count the
animals on page 9. Count the
shells on page 15, etc.
Pause the story at page 13. Call
out a number and ask the children
to point to its written form.
Teacher's Notes
After you read

Ask the children to suggest
animals from the story that can
be added to the initial brainstorm.
Write them on the board.
Vote for your favourite holiday
activity from the story (making
sandcastles, funfair, swimming,
boat trip).

1 Make a mini-book of seaside

words.
1 Follow Mole and stick.

Ask the children to look at the
first picture and read the speech
bubble. Repeat with the other
pictures. The children cut out
the six pictures and stick them
according to the speech bubbles.
Start to write a word from the
worksheet on the board letter by
letter. Encourage the children to
read and guess the word.
Worksheet 2
1 Trace and match.
Ask the children to look at the
first word in dots and invite
volunteers to call out the letters
they see. When the children have
completed the worksheet, invite
volunteers to write words they
know on the board in dots for
other children to guess.
2 Look and label Moles

holiday photos.
Explain that as moles live
underground in the darkness,
they only have small eyes and
dont have good eyesight (they
mostly use their paws to feel
their way around). Mole cant
see too well and isnt good at
taking photographs. Ask the
children to look at his holiday
photos and decide what he tried
to take a picture of.
Extend this activity by asking
the children to draw badly
framed photos for their friends
to guess.
Tell the class that theyre going

to make a mini-book of seaside
words. Give out the template and
instruct the children to colour all the
pictures and trace over the words.
How to make the book:
1 Fold the template in half,

Young Learner & Trinity Exams

Tips for the Test - YLE and Trinity
The Cambridge Young Learner exams are designed for
children aged from 7 to 12 years old. They are tested
normally in their own school environment or an exam
centre, and the exams all follow the same format. There
are three levels: Starters, Movers and Flyers. In terms of
grammar and lexis, the Flyers level is on par with the KET
exams. The difference is that, unlike the exams for older
students, children cannot fail the YLE. Every participant
is given a diploma with badges in Reading, Writing,
Listening and Speaking. The badges are coloured in
depending on the success of the candidate.
Exams follow a very set format. The children never write
on the exam papers, rather they answer on an answer
sheet, usually with one word answers. They are tested in
groups, except for the Speaking session, where the test
is given individually.
The YLE CD-ROM includes three complete tests. These
can be printed out in colour and used for classroom

practice; one set can be used many times. The children
write their answers on a piece of paper except for the
last page of the Listening exams, which is used for
colouring and therefore can only be used once.
Tips
When doing the practice exams it is best to recreate
similar circumstances as when the children will do
the exam themselves, allow them the same amount
of time, and have them practice exam techniques.

The interactive activities on the CD-ROM are divided
into the different sections of the exams. This way the
teacher may choose to practice the same exam question
in various exams or practice one complete exam, or pick
and choose activities from different exams.
Trinity College London, Graded Examinations in Spoken

English
The Trinity Examinations in Spoken English are one-toone oral examinations with a native English speaking
Trinity examiner, which test a students speaking and
listening skills. The exams provide an official recognition
of a students level of spoken English and are accepted
by universities and employers worldwide. Candidates
must be aged 7 or over.
The examinations are divided into a series of 12 oral
exams which test the students general conversation
and ability to discuss prepared topics. The exam grades
range from absolute beginner level to near native
fluency.

tool encouraging students to practice and try to
communicate in English.
Tips
Each English lesson, ask general questions such as
What day is it today? Whats the weather like today? Is
it spring or summer? How old are you?
Encourage full answers whenever asking questions.

T: Its Tuesday.
When asking questions, if a child does not know
the answer, encourage them to say I dont know
or I cant remember or Im sorry, I dont know the
word in English, rather than remaining silent or
saying errr.
Make question practice fun. Do it in the form of a
team quiz and award points. Or ask questions at the
end of a lesson, whoever answers correctly can line
up first.
Practise for the exam in regular, short sessions so
candidates become more confident with the style of
question and can answer more rapidly and naturally.

When choosing a grade for candidates, consider the

childs personality as well as their level of English. A
shy child with a good level of English, may not do
as well as a more outgoing child who speaks more
spontaneously.
Encourage the children to ask questions too. From
Level 2 onwards they are expected to ask the
examiner questions.
