AIM OF THE JOB


To fulfil specific technical tasks across TV Current Affairs London Productions including
media management and editing, in conjunction with general PMA responsibilities.
CONTEXT
This role is an embedded Technical position across Current Affairs Productions. The position
focuses on specific technical tasks to aid an efficient and creative Post Production process,
whilst also encompassing other Production-based tasks as per a traditional PMA role.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Offloading and back up to drives for productions across TV Current Affairs London
and ingest rushes from various formats for non-linear edits. To trouble shoot if
problems arise prior to, during or after capturing. Quality check all captured media.

To create DVDs and QuickTimes in accordance with technical specifications for the
department when needed for viewing and transcription purposes.

To manage & process file-based assets including Tapeless material, Graphics, audio
and the like as well as the LTO set up for the department.

To be proactive in establishing/facilitating the Productions Post Production workflow

Delivery of content to News via Jupiter.

Being Responsible for Media/Asset Management, including monitoring Storage levels


and Media deletions along with managing the drives stock across the department

Where required, complete editing tasks and deliver creative solutions by using LNE
and associated software (e.g. Motion).

To understand the delivery requirements for the Production and liaise with the PC on
production about delivery of material to post houses.

Work in collaboration with the Production Coordinator/Manager to be aware of the


Post Production budget and impact of media management processes, ensuring value
for money.

To follow BBC safety requirements and instructions, especially in relation to


emergencies and to report any accidents, dangerous situations or defects in safety
arrangements.

To fulfil additional Production tasks as and when required by the Production


team.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

Proven experience of performing downloading and media management tasks , as


well as a demonstrable interest/competency of FCP editing.

Ability to assess priorities and adapt to fast changing circumstances.

Able to work calmly under pressure to set deadlines.

Able to work responsibly and take responsibility for the smooth running of the
offloading procedures.

Good knowledge of the following essential:


1. Technical standards - basic understanding of BBC broadcast standards, bars and
tone, clocks, Aspect ratios, Title safe.
2. Formats tape formats, codecs, file formats, , progressive and interlaced media, bitc,
bit rates and audio sample rates.
3. Tape machines differences between VTRs, Cables, Ref, Down-converting, capable
of wiring up a deck correctly.
4. Shared storage - Basic understanding of OSX and finder, with an emphasis on File
creation and media management. .
5. Understanding of non-linear editing - easy setups, user preferences, the Log and
capture tool, and the media management tool.
Some knowledge of the following preferred:
1. DVD Studio Pro and Compressor - Creating DVDs with menus and chapters and
transcoding using compressor and toast,
2. A demonstrable interest in technology and broadcasting would be an advantage.
3. An interest in new media technology, and knowledge of programme making would be
an advantage.
4. A knowledge of the working methods of the BBC TV Current Affairs TV division and
its output, and experience of using BBC systems (SAP, Quick Order etc.) and
working with BBC partners
