INTRODUCTION

As we continue to partner up with our successful and hardworking non-profit organization

United Way, we had already succeeded on creating a program that gives guidance and education
help to students who attend elementary and whose school is unfortunately under privileged. As
you may ask yourself and wonder, why hasnt anyone created a program for the older students?
Our answer is, we of the employees at JPMorgan Chase & Co. are in the process of starting a
new program, which is only specifically for students who are currently juniors and seniors in
high school. Of course, we want them to be successful in the professional work force, who
doesnt? However, being successful isnt the only important thing in the professional work force.
We want to teach and break down every component that is a key factor in the work force. Not
only will they learn from us, but they will also be able to show or teach others how on to be
professional and think like a professional.
In the research that we have accumulated, we had found that certain areas of Dallas have
unbelievably low percentage rates of high school students who decide to stay in school and
continue into a higher education. Although, there may be many areas in Dallas that need this
program for their high school students, we decided to start up our new program in South Dallas.
Due to it being one of the high areas with a low percentage rate of students who are going and
trying to sign up for college. The building we are using, The Jeffries Street Learning Center,
already have an existing program that helps younger kids, so this place will be a perfect spot to
extend the program for when they become older. Furthermore, we also plan on raising funds to
help the students out in the future. Some of the ways we will be collecting funds is by:

Employees at JPMorgan Chase & Co. will have the opportunity to donate money from
each check.

Our partners at United Way are helping by awarding grants to the program.

With the help of the volunteers at the learning center we have planned fundraisers to gain
more funds to power our program.

In addition, for convenience we have found the best way to set up our schedules for our amazing
staff. Therefore, it can be flexible for our staff members and volunteers. Lastly, we found all the
ways we can use our resources.
PURPOSE
The world is developing more and more each year. This is causing an increase of education that
is required from each person. Therefore, we thought of this program in which will help students
who are attending high school and who need to be ready for the professional world and to guide
them into to higher education. The education plan is to teach them how to be effective, an idea to
figure out what they need to improve in, to teach them what is the perfect attire for each
1

situation, and practice interviewing with them so that they will be prepared for any and every
question that could possibly be asked. Besides helping students who are underprivileged, we are
actually helping the community in South Dallas, our goal is to make a change for the better. This
will help South Dallas become a community that has little difference in social class.
PROBLEM
As of August 2015, Dallas County by itself suffers from a 4.10% low employment rate (5.70%
average in 2015) which means, a total of 51,937 people are unemployed (Unemployment rate,
2014). This is a result from various socioeconomic factors that prevent it from progressing. This
problem begins from the lack of resources and guidance in the youth. In detail, our primary focus
is to create a program to educate and promote guidance to the youth who are currently juniors
and seniors that attend high school in the city of South Dallas. Therefore, to better prepare these
students for the workforce in the near future. Without question, our program will focus and work
on these issues to better help the youth:

Educate them on how to prepare well organized resumes. Therefore, the resumes will
always be up to date, organized into sections, and relevant responsibilities in bullet
points.

Guidance on how to figure out and work on their own strengths and weaknesses.
Therefore, they will be able to either work on and/or overcome their weaknesses. Also,
how and when to use their strengths in different situations whether it is life overall or in
the workforce environment.

Create mock interview practices so they will have a great idea on how an interview works
and what to expect with no surprises. Throughout these mock interview practices the
student will learn on how to: do research about the company to have some knowledge of
them, listen to what is being asked, speak clearly, make eye contact, and be able to tie
their answers to issues the company and/or interviewer is facing. Lastly, think of a few
reasonable questions to ask at the end the interview and know how to be energetic but not
desperate.

Educating the student that first impressions are important therefore, dressing for success
is vital. Even though a student may have a good idea on how to dress for success. Our
staff will still provide tips and pointers, which will be given to the student so they can be
knowledge on how to dress professionally when in doubt. For example, checking out the
company culture on the internet and how they dress and match the interviewer. In other
words, the student should match what they would think the employer would wear or if
they cant figure it out they should slightly be dressier (Deering, 2015).

BACKGROUND
We all know that kids cannot control where they live or what school they have to be placed at
because of the school districts lines they live within. Many, but not all parents, cannot afford to
send their kid(s) to a private high school institution to possibly get a better education. Therefore,
the kid(s) are stuck at a high school whose education is not the best. For example, lets take
South Oak Cliff 9-12th 2014 high school state exit exams: They have about 1346 students and 88
teachers. On their proficient English exam their percentage rate was 19%, Mathematics 9%, and
College Readiness Index 6.2. Statistically, the district average for those entire state exit exams
are supposed to be equal to or higher than 49% (English), 34% (Mathematics), and 32.6 (College
Readiness Index). To be back up my facts, these numbers came from the South Oak Cliff review
(South Oak Cliff Overview, 2015).
At the request of The Dallas Chamber of Commerce our financial institution firm JPMorgan
Chase & Co. works with community partners like United Way a nonprofit organization to create
pathways to opportunity by supporting workforce development, financial capability, small
business development and community development in the regions where we do business.
We commissioned this program of helping the youth who are juniors and seniors in high school
in the city of Dallas. By partnering together we are breaking the cycles of school dropouts,
poverty, and poor health in North Texas. With efforts from the entire community we can assist an
underprivileged area that struggles to break the cycle of poverty.

PLANNED SCHEDULE
The planning process of any organization is key, so with the help of the largest privately funded
non-profit organization, we made this process as efficient as possible. Partnering up with United
Way provided us with a good understanding of which tasks to focus on, since they have
expanded to more than 1,000 communities across 40 countries worldwide (About, n.d.).
Our first step as a non-profit organization was to select a center of operations, so we selected
Jeffries Street Learning Center located at 3001 Grand Ave Dallas, TX 75215. We selected this
location because Jeffries Learning Center previously provided educational and mentoring
programs for low income and underprivileged children. We believed using Jeffries Learning
Center was a good venue to start our operations, since it is convenient and familiar to many
people in South Dallas.
The next task was to file a certificate of formation with the secretary of state in accordance with
the Texas Business Organizations Code (How to Start a NonProfit, 2015). These articles of
incorporation include:

Name of Corporation (Article 1)

3

Registered Agent and Registered Office (Article 2)

Directors (Article 3)
Shares (Article 4)
Purpose (Article 5)

We knew this task was essential to our organization, since we cannot operate without first
forming our organization with the state of Texas. Once recognized as an official non-profit
organization, we could focus on implementing policies, bylaws and procedures. Implementing
these procedures was going to take a bit of time, so during this process we decided to file for
Federal Tax-Exempt Status since we are a nonprofit organization (Nonprofit Organizations, n.d.).
All things considered, once all these tasks are completed we will start recruiting and taking
volunteers to assist underprivileged juniors and seniors, and teach them about professional
development. Making the daily schedules for our operations will be saved for last since we want
to be as flexible as possible and allow students with busy schedules to attend.
The table below shows the order of tasks and dates our organization is going to take.

STAFFING
United Way is the worlds largest privately funded non-profit organization, and with Brian A.
Gallagher as our President and Chief Executive Officer, this project is going to be a success. He
first served as a management trainee for United Way in 1981 where he held many positions
throughout the years, and eventually becoming the President and Chief Executive Officer of
United Way of America in 2002 (Brian Gallagher, n.d.). In addition, he got selected to be the
CEO of United Way Worldwide when United Way of America and United Way International
merged together under Gallaghers leadership.
Assisting Gallagher will be James Jamie Dimon, in charge of all the financial responsibilities
who will occupy the position of Executive Vice President. When JPMorgan Chase bought Bank
One in July of 2004, Dimon was named the Chief Executive Officer and chairman of the board
in December 31, 2005 (Halpern, n.d.).
Our Chief of staff in charge of recruiting volunteers, and in charge of all the trapersonnel will be
Brian J. G. Lachance. Lachance has been with United Way of America since 1997, and presently
serves as the Chief of Staff of United Way Worldwide. Additionally, Lachance received his
Doctorate degree from Georgetown University Law Center, and is a member of the Maryland
and District of Columbia Bar Association (Chief of Staff, n.d.).
Project manager in charge of planning the events, and coordinating with all the personnel will be
Joseph V. Haggerty. He is currently the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of
United Way, where he is in charge of motivating and leading a high performance leadership team
to implement plans for the operational infrastructure (Executive Vice President, n.d.).

BUDGETING
Chases Role in Funding
Through a selection of fundraising efforts and charitable acts, Chase will ultimately be the
sponsor for this initiative. All funds raised will be allocated to the operation guided by United
Way.
Below I have listed and defined the more effective undertakings in garnering funds:

Auto-deduction of 3% of wages per pay period (example: A biweekly earnings of

$1000*.03 raises $30)
Jeans Day: (support directed from retail banking department since dress code is strictly
upheld) every weekend Team Members can pay $5 to wear jeans to work.
Raffle Tickets: sold at $1 each for a chance to win a luxurious Paid Time Off weekend
trip
Team Member Volunteer Activities (TMVA): community volunteer activities such as
local car-washing, chili cook-offs, auctions, etc. all hosted via Chase through an event
coordinator

Using 2014s Fundraising Revenues as a baseline, Ive constructed a budget plan for this

As a non-profit organization, United Way will use the funds donated by Chase to maintain this
operation. Based off the estimated net donation income ($24,350), United Way will disburse the
entirety of the funds in the means of educational grants, and the educational workshops hosted at
the Jeffries Learning Center.
The donation income ($24,350) provided by Chase will be apportioned in the following ways:

Rent Expense for Jeffries Learning Center

Spokespeople: credible, professionals with backgrounds in teaching

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

While being students in high school, one will think it is not important to:

Prepare a well organize resume

Learning to figure out what their own strengths and weaknesses are

Why interviews are important

Realize first impressions are relevant therefore, dressing for success is vital

How to research jobs and apply for them

Think about the future and how near it is

It is our goal to help and guide students who attend high school in South Dallas who are close to
entering the workforce. Not all students can go to a school whose education scores and teaching
are high and acceptable. Some students have to settle for less and deal with that they have
because there is no other option.
Our financial institution firm JPMorgan Chase & Co. who is partnered with United Way a nonprofit organization will build a program that will be held at The Jeffries Street Learning Center
located at 3001 Grand Ave Dallas, TX 75215 that will give underprivileged students a better
future, something to look forward too.
At JPMorgan Chase, we believe we have a fundamental responsibility to help our clients and our
communities navigate a complex global economy and address their economic and social
challenges (Global Philanthropy, 2015). Therefore, our employees will have an opportunity to
use their professional skills while giving back to their communities.
Not only will we provide guidance and education to the students who attend our program, but the
money we raise will also go towards educational grants and educational workshops. Our institute
takes donations from current employees of JPMorgan Chase & Co. and we also plan on having
fund raisers (i.e. car washes, garage sells, and etc.). Our budgeting and planning schedule will be
completed by early next year and we should be operational by summer of 2016.
AUTHORIZATION REQUEST
Our organization at JPMorgan Chase & Co. includes Angelica Gaytan, Javier Castro, Mayra
Carrasco, and Tahmid Asad is asking for authorization from The Dallas Chamber of Commerce.
To start a new beginning in South Dallas by creating a program to better help the youth in this
community and break the cycle of school dropouts and poverty. Letting the students see a better
future and show that people are actually there for them.
