I remember leading a group from Lancaster County in the spring of 2010 to New Orleans
to do continued clean up and construction in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. I also
remember someone asking me before I left, "You mean they're still cleaning up down
there? Wasn't that like five years ago that Katrina hit?" The person's timeframe was
correct, but the perception was wrong. Yes, Katrina had hit in 2005 so it had almost been
five years, but the assumption was that recovery was complete and the lives of people
were back to normal. Of course, they weren't in 2010, and even in 2016, more than ten
years after the devastating hurricane, people are still putting their lives back together. I
also remember someone telling me in New Orleans that of all the faith-based
organizations which came to help after Katrina, only the Presbyterians and the United
Methodists were still there, quietly doing the work of recovery after everyone else had moved on. At that
moment, I was very proud to be a United Methodist!
From April 3-9, eight members of our church ventured to the east side of Brooklyn to work on homes
damaged by Superstorm Sandy, which hit the east coast in October 2011. The members pictured are:
(crouched) Ray Moeller, Linda Drake, Homer Lee, Nagwa Cramer, Sum Bommarito, Mike Carlson, Robin
and Pat Braun. The young woman pictured to the left is Regina, the site manager for the project. From
here, I'll let Robin Braun take over the story:
"Homes in Canarsie, New York are still in need of repairs from flood damage caused by Superstorm
Sandy, which struck the east coast in October 2011. Can you imagine what that would be like if it was your
home? On April 3, ESUMC sent a mission team to New York for a week to help one family in their
rebuilding effort. Additional workers who could not miss a week of work joined in on Thursday. The team
worked on a home which had sustained water damage from flooding and from rain after the roof failed. A
bathroom was gutted and rebuilt. The team painted living room and bedroom ceilings, walls, and doors,
(Continued on page 2)
and installed trim. The house is close to completion. The team enjoyed
their time of camaraderie, good food, an afternoon in Manhattan, and the
joy of exercising their faith."
It's now been almost five years since Sandy, but there is still plenty of
work left to do, and we thank these eight folks for their work on our behalf
and on behalf of the Kingdom of God. We'd love to have more people go
on these work projects, so please see any of these team members if you
would like to volunteer in the future. Knowing what we have gone through
with our roofs in recent weeks, we know that there will always be work
somewhere for the people of God who are willing to go where they are
sent.
Speaking of workers in the Kingdom of God, we are blessed to welcome
back Luke Billman this coming Sunday, who will dialogue with me during
the time of the message in both services. Luke and his brother, Nic, are
part of Shores of Grace ministry in Brazil, which helps put a stop to
human trafficking in the name of Jesus Christ. Specifically, they help
release women from the bondage of prostitution and to find freedom in
knowing Jesus. Luke will share with us some exciting new ways God is
leading this ministry, and I will present Luke a check from our church
which is from our Faith Promise offerings. Thank you for your continued
support of this vital mission fund, and I look forward to seeing you this
coming Sunday!

Stephen Ministry
What do Stephen Minsters bring into
the relationship with a care receiver?
They bring the power of God the
Father, Jesus his loving Son, and the
Holy Spirit. That power is
conveyed through the use of the
Bible, prayer, confession, forgiveness,
hope, and non-judgmental
servanthood. Stephen Ministers draw
strength and guidance from the Holy
Spirit during their meetings with their
care receivers as they are reminded ,
Stephen Ministers are the caregivers,
God is the cure giver.
