The path
Despite being born in 1987, one of my favorite television shows of all time is The Andy Griffith Show. The
fact is that I learned a lot of life lessons from that television show. Unlike the mindless junk that we are fed
today, those shows actually carried moral truth within them. For example, there was the episode where a man
named Rafe Hollister tried out and won a place in the local Mayberry Musicale. Barney Fife thought that he
was going to get that position and spent the episode singing around the courthouse. At one point, Rafe
Hollister heard Barney singing and his response was to ask Andy how long Barney had been ailing. If you
remember the episode, Andy asked Barney what he would do if he were asked to sing a capella? Deputy Fife
showed his ignorance by singing the words a capella to the tune of La Cucaracha. Makes you appreciate
Bill Tankersley, doesnt it? Anyway...
Rafe Hollister was a simple farmer. He wore overalls and boots and was as country as a butterbean. But
he had a beautiful voice and was selected for the part. Well, long story short, Mayor Stoner and Mrs. Jeffries
just did not think that Rafe would be an appropriate choice for such a high class event in downtown Mayberry
(even as a boy I was able to catch the irony). They told Andy that Rafe absolutely could not sing. Andy
disagreed and decided that he would not go along with the mayor. In an effort to appease Mayor Stoner, Andy
had Rafe dress in a brand new suit and tie. That didnt work well at all because Rafe felt so uncomfortable.
When the Mayor and the snobby Mrs. Jeffries agreed that Rafe could sing but that Andy must promise not to
let Rafe associate with any of the townspeople, Andy realized that it was nothing more than simple prejudice
and arrogance at work. So, he let Rafe sing in his regular clothing of boots and overalls. And the crowd loved
him.
Its a simple lesson. We often get fixated on the outside when it is what is on the inside that matters. Rafe
Hollister was a kind and genuine person but some people could not see past his boots and overalls...
But the LORD said to Samuel, Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused
him. For the LORD does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at
the heart. (1 Samuel 16.7 NKJV)
In Christ with love,
