BRIDGEBUILDER Enhance The Economic Performance of Bridge Projects

THE "BRIDGEBUILDER" FORMTRAVELLER

The "Bridgebuilder" formtraveller system was invented in 1970 and today it is acclaimed for
enhancing the cost-effectiveness of bridge projects world-wide. NRS has continually improved the
Bridgebuilder in collaboration with major contractors. The system is lightweight, versatile and easy
to assemble and operate. Rolling forward on rails, the system can be reset quickly and easily.

WHERE TO USE THE BRIDGEBUILDER

The Bridgebuilder is used for free cantilever construction of post-tensioned boxgirder - and cablestayed concrete bridges. Engineering to international standards, the system provides an
exceptionally rigid formwork, with a maximum deflection of less than 25 mm at full loading.

STANDARD CONVERTIBLE BRIDGEBUILDER

The Standard Bridgebuilder is designed for a maximum segment length of 5 m and load capacities
(concrete and formwork) varying from 100 tons to 400 tons. The steel weight depends on the
cross-section of the bridge in question, but will normally vary from about 25 tons to 65 tons
correspondingly. The Standard Bridgebuilder may be adapted to suit almost any cross-section, and
is easily adjustable during operation to variations in segment length (up to 5 m), section height,
web thickness, and deck width.

TAILORED BRIDGEBUILDERS
The Bridgebuilder may be tailor-made for segment lengths beyond 5 m and other extreme
conditions. Alternatively it may be designed for shorter lengths where the maximum segment
length is less than 5 m, and there is a requirement to reduce the weight of the Bridgebuilder for a
particular application.

PRECAST SEGMENTAL BRIDGEBUILDERS

The Precast Segmental Bridgebuilder is designed for a maximum precast segment lenght of
approx. 3 - 5 m and load capacities between 100 and 300 tons. It is equipped with two hoists for
lifting the precast segments as well as for adjusting the crossfall. A manipulator permits
adjustment of the longitudinal fall and hydraulic cylinders launch the device forward. The Precast
Segmental Bridgebuilder can be adapted to almost any new cross section for future projects.

BRIDGE DESIGN & DEFLECTION CONTROL

A variety of technical advice is available in connection with cantilever-bridges, covering in
particular the following subjects:Tender Phase
Complete bridge design
Alternative design
Optimum design of crosssection

Construction Phase
Optimum design of concrete and
reinforcement
Deflections, calculation and control
Time saving working procedures
Post-tensioning
Concrete, grouting

THE BRIDGEBUILDER FEATURES

Lightweight
The use of rectangular hollow sections in the main structural components and
recoverable high strength bars in all stays and ties reduces the total steel weight
to a minimum.
Flexible Design
The Bridgebuilder may be adapted to almost any cross-section and is easily
adjustable during operation to variations in segment length, box height, web
thickness, deck width and road alignment (gradient, curvature, super-elevations).
Small Deflections
The vertical deflection at the front of the Bridgebuilder is less than 25 mm at
maximum load. Formwork beams are designed for a maximum deflection of
1/400 of their length.
Easy Assembly
One Bridgebuilder may be assembled in one week. Rolling forward on rails, the

reset time is short.

MSS A Quick, Reliable & Economical Solution For Modern Bridge Construction
THE MOVABLE SCAFFOLDING SYSTEM - MSS
The development of our cost-effective system over the years, stems from the need to reduce the high
costs of construction manpower in Norway. Today, our MSS for cast-in-situ bridges can offer many costsaving advantages to your bridge construction projects, through: optimized design
ease of assembly
efficient operation

THE DESIGN & FLEXIBILITY

The MSS was first designed in close co-operation with Norwegian contractors in the 1970's. The system
has since then been developed and successfully used in various major bridge projects in Scandinavia and
world wide.
The design of our advanced equipment has been improved and optimized over the years, based on our
wealth of experience from over 100 projects. The system is light weight, easy to assemble, practical in
design, supported by internationally known hydraulic and cranage systems, and most importantly,
efficient in operation. The MSS can also easily be adapted to any bridge cross section (single box, double

GANTRIES For Extreme Tight Radius Design In Modern Segmental Bridge Construction
THE LAUNCHING GANTRY FOR PRECAST SEGMENT ERECTION
After NRS entered the segmental market, expressions like "glue-as-you-go" and "turnaround" have
been well recognised world-wide as cost & timesaving solutions for erecting segmental bridges.
The implementation of a hinged Gantry solution has proven successful erection of spans down to
75m horizontal radius. This is applicable for both overhead and underslung gantries, and for both
span-by-span and balanced -cantilever erection methods. A specially designed gantry crane is
used to travel through the kinked hinges.

THE DESIGN & FLEXIBILITY

NRS can offer gantries for both overhead and underslung erection. The design of our advanced
equipment has been improved and optimized over the years, based on our wealth of experience
from the various projects carried out, leading to the present systems, which is light weight, easy to
assemble, practical, supported by internationally known hydraulic and cranage systems and most
important, efficient in operation. The gantries can be re-used on other projects, too. Using hinges

to go thru curves of as little as 75m, increases the contractor's possibility to re-use the gantry
later on, almost independently of the next project's radii.

HINGED GANTRIES
Throughout the last years, several contractors have chosen to use the special NRS - Gantries for
their challenging segmental bridge projects. With horizontal radii down to 130m and span length
up to 50m, the use of the special kinked overhead Gantry has proven to be very successful. For
other challenging segmental projects contractors have chosen the special Hinged Underslung
Gantry. Some of the Gantries supplied have up to 12 hinges and are capable of erecting simply
supported spans up to 63m and horizontal radii down to 75m.

GLUE-AS-YOU-GO
One of the special segment erection methods executed with Gantries supplied by NRS is the "glueas-you-go" procedure for wet joint segmental bridges. This method allows a limited pre-loading of
the gantry, avoiding the time consuming double handling of all the segments.
Normally one to three segments are preloaded to the Gantry at one end of the
span.
The erection of the span starts from the other end, starting with the first
segment as a guideline for the remaining segments.
Each new segment is temporary stressed to the previous erected segment by
means of temporary tension bars. This is mainly to obtain a minimum contact
pressure between the segments (curing of the epoxy glue).
When using a overhead Gantry, the last segments of the span are equipped with
wider suspension beams, allowing the last segment to be turned inside the
previous suspended segment.
The whole span is finally adjusted to the correct level (vertically) and alignment
(transversally) by the Gantry, and the permanent stressing operation can take
place.

HOW TO SUPPORT/SUSPEND
To support the segments during erecting, hydraulic cylinders are used at underslung Gantries,
while segments are suspended by means of tension bars directly to overhead Gantries.

FULL SPAN METHOD

PRE-CAST FULL SPAN EQUIPMENT

The pre-cast full span method of construction (commonly known as FSM) is one of the fastest
techniques used in building viaducts. The FSM involves casting the whole bridge span, typically
30m to 55m long and between 600t and 1,500t in weight, in the casting yard and transporting the
whole span with a specially designed multi-axle Tyre Trolley to the bridge site. At the bridge site,
an FSM purpose-built Launcher will be used to lift and place the whole span in the final position.
NRS's scope of delivery of FSM equipment covers the design and supply of the complete range of
equipment typically needed in such constructions:
Special formwork with inner mould (hydraulically manoeuvred)
Lifting cranes for pre-cast yard
Llifting cranes for pre-cast bridge span (or special straddle carriers able to
manoeuvre on site and stock pre-cast bridge spans)
Multi-axle Tyre Trolley
FSM Launcher
Our extensive experience in global projects ensures that clients will be free of the various problems
generally associated with the use of the FSM Launcher. Through its strategic collaboration with PDN
s.p.a. of Italy, NRS is undoubtedly one of the most recognised suppliers of the FSM system in the
world today.

HOW THE FSM LAUNCHER WORKS

The typical working cycle for the FSM Launcher is as follows:
1. The bridge span is cast in a special fixed
formwork in the casting yard, stressed
and cured.
2. The pre-cast bridge span is lifted from the
formwork by means of either a gantry
crane or a special straddle carrier. The
pre-cast span can also be moved out of
the formwork by using special trolleys
placed at the bottom of the formwork.
3. The pre-cast span is loaded onto the
multi-axle Tyre Trolley.
4. The Trolley transports the bridge span
over the previously erected span to the
Launcher, which is positioned at the span
to be erected next.
5. The Launcher lifts the bridge span.
6. The bridge span is then lowered slowly by
the lifting system to its final position and
the hanging devices are then released.
Meanwhile, the Trolley returns to the pickup area.
7. The Launcher system is now ready for the
self-launching phase. Temporary rails are
laid on the recently placed span and the
machine is launched to another span.
