Integrated Project Overview

The design project is structured to comprise 3 subtasks and a final report,
each to be completed at approximately at least 2-week intervals
throughout the semester. The project will conclude with an oral
presentation or individual interview. You will work together in your
homework teams, each team on a slightly different problem. The design
project will contribute 20% to your final grade.

Project Description
The project objective is to design a reactor for the production of:
Production of propylene from methanol
Production of toluene from naphtha
Production of phenol from cumene
Production of dimethylacetamide from acetic acid
Production of phthalate hydride from o-xylene
Production of ethanol from ethylene

While various technologies have been practiced for these separations,

distillation will be the focus of your design for this project.
1.2The project work will involve few subtasks, these including
a) A review of the literature background on the product and production
technologies.
b) Determine the number of distillation columns required, their
location, and enough information for each distillation column to cost
it.
c) The distillation column that provides the product should be
designed in detail. A detailed design of a tray tower includes
number of trays, tray spacing, diameter, reflux ratio, active area,
weir height, top and bottom pressure specifications, and design of
auxiliary equipment (heat exchangers, pump, reflux drum, if
present).
d) A detailed design of a packed tower includes height, packing size
and type, and the same other specifications as in a tray tower.

Project Details
2.1 Chapter 1: Introduction

Introduction of the product

Application of products

Market survey

Screening of synthesis route

Minimum 3 synthesis routes with simple economic potential

calculations are discussed and selection of one route is clearly
justified (e.g. availability of raw materials, effectiveness/efficiency
of selected processes, preliminary safety and environmental issues)
2.2 Chapter 2:Process Synthesis and Flow Sheeting

Process Flow Diagram

Clearly explained the PFD (complete numbering & labeling) and

convincingly describe the processes & equipment involved with
novelty & creativity
Manual Material and Energy Balance
Students must state clearly what is the assumption that they use
and where all the physical properties/ correlation originated from.
Apply the rule of thumbs.

2.3 Chapter 3: Process Equipment Sizing

An equipment sizing should be done for all equipment involved in

the process. Students have to state the method they are using and
give a rough dimension of the equipment.
2.4Chapter 4: Economic Analysis
Costing involve raw material and equipment.
2.5 Reference and Appendix

Proper citation and list of reference format include appendix for

detail calculation of the same equipment if necessary.

Resources for Your Project
3.1Journal Articles
Many of the journal articles that you will need for this project can be
obtained online from the Library. You need to locate reference for your
reaction immediately so that you can meet the first deadline. Online
journal can be found:
From the library website: http://iportal.ump.edu.my/ under EResources (at the bottom). The username is your student number
while the password is your IC number.
Or directly for the most journals (If you use the internet access of
UMP):
o Science Direct (Elsevier Journals)
http://www.sciencedirect.com/ such as Separation and
Purification Technology, Chemical Engineering Science and
Chemical Engineering Journal
o ACS publications http://pubs.acs.org/ of interest such as
under section Unit Operations and Processes.
3.2Patents
Patents will not provide specific process information for design; however,
they contain very useful section on the Review of the Current Art which
will help provide additional prospective for your process background. To
search and access issued patents in the U.S. online, you may visit the
following site: http://www.uspto.gov or other relevant website.
3.3Reference Books and other related links
The relevant reference books or handbooks can be obtained from
the library.
