(AP) Ted Williams said
Saturday he approved 100
percent of Washington owner
Bob Shorts trade Friday night
of first baseman Mike Epstein
and reliever Darold Knowles
to Oakland.
The Senators, in return,
received reliever Paul Lindblad, catcher Frank Fernandez, first baseman Don
Mincher, and an undisclosed
amount of cash.
We gave a pretty good left
-handed reliever for a pretty
good left-handed reliever,
said Williams after the Senators beat Minnesota, 6-3, and
won their seventh game in
nine outings.
We gave up a good hitting
first baseman for a goodhitting first baseman, said
Williams. Plus, we got another player and some money,
which is pretty important to
the club right now.
Williams endorsement of
the trade came on the heels of
a scene Friday night in the
Washington clubhouse that
saw the Senators manager and
Short face-to-face talking
loudly. Williams ended the
conversation by walking out
the dressing room.
That raised speculation that
Williams may have been unhappy about the trade since he
publicly expressed the opinion
last fall that Short had given
up too much to obtain pitcher
Denny McLain from Detroit.
The Tigers got third baseman Aurelio Rodriguez, shortstop Ed Brinkman and pitchers Joe Coleman and Jim Hannan for McLain and infielders
Don Wert and Elliott Maddox.
Its a great opportunity for
Mike and Darold to play on a

game of the season.
Cincy starter Don Gullett (0

innings, allowing five runs.
He has allowed 10 runs in 4
1/3 innings in his past two
starts.
