It was a good opportunity for us the Belet Weyne district to meet
the head of AMISOM. We spoke about many things including
pacifying the region of Al Shabaab. More importantly, the police
here needs training, because it is very critical for the maintenance
of security in the region. We asked for training support for the police
and the military.

I have realised that there is a lot of determination in Hiran to fight
Al Shabaab. They need to be supported, they need means, they
need equipment and they need better coordination. We are going to
work with them to see how all the needs can be met, so that our
impact against Al Shabaab in Hiran and Middle Shabelle is
enhanced,

The head of mission visited us to assess the security situation,
AMISOM operations and the collaboration between the SNA and
AMISOM. He has also met with Hiran administration officials, the
District Commissioner of Belet Weyne and his deputies. During the

meetings, positive ideas were exchanged between Hiran


administration officials and AMISOM. The local people informed him
of their security needs to fight and defeat Al Shabaab, as well as the
need for trained police to maintain security in the region.

AU Special Representative Visits Hiran Region, commends
strong partnership between AMISOM and the local
community
The AU Special Representative for Somalia and head of the African
Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) Ambassador Madeira Francisco
yesterday held discussions with the leadership of Hiran region in
Belet Weyne, commending the robust partnership between the
community and AMISOM in the fight against Al Shabaab.
The SRCC also met with AMISOM troops in Sector IV area of
operation, engaging the commanders on the on-going operations,
challenges faced and future plans. The meeting with area leadership
was attended by the Governor of Hiran region, the Belet Weyne
District Commissioner and elders from the region.
Mohamed Osman Abdi, the Belet Weyne District Commissioner, said
the meeting provided a key avenue to discuss issues afecting the
region, ways of improving partnership with AMISOM as well as key
action points necessary to intensify the fight against terrorist group
Al Shabaab. He specifically called for more support for the Police
and Somali National Army, to enable them maintain security in the
region.
It was good opportunity for us the Belet Weyne district to meet the
head of AMISOM. We spoke about many things including pacifying
the region of Al Shabaab. More importantly, the police here need
training, because it is very critical for maintenance of security in the
region. So we asked for training support for the police and the
military, said the Commissioner.
Amb. Madeira took note of the good working relationship between
AMISOM troops, the SNA and the local community. He spoke of the
need to extend further support to the Administration to develop
local capacity and boost the fight against Al Shabaab.

are going to work with them to see how all these things can be
brought together; so that our impact against AS in Hiran and Middle
Shabelle is enhanced, Amb. Madeira noted.
The AMISOM Djibouti Battalion Commander Col. Hassan Jama
appreciated the visit of the SRCC, which he said brought the critical
stakeholders in the region together to discuss how the security and
stability of Hiran region can be further enhanced.
The head of mission visited us to assess the security situation,
AMISOM operations and the collaboration between the SNA and
AMISOM. He has also met with the Hiran Administration, the District
Commissioner of Belet Weyne and his deputies. During the
meetings, ideas were exchanged between Hiran administration
officials and AMISOM. The local people informed him of their security
needs to fight and defeat Al Shabaab, as well as the need for trained
police to maintain security in the region, added Col. Jama.
Amb. Madeira reiterated the commitment of AMISOM to strengthen
such partnerships, and continue to provide support towards growth
and development of the various Somali Security Institutions in the
fight against terror group Al Shabaab.
