Wildfire season
The Pine Barrens is one of the states
most combustible areas

Wildfire season kicked off
early this year in the Pine Barrens when a blaze broke out in
Wharton State Forest on April 17.
According to the New Jersey
Forest Fire Service, the Phillips
Bridge wildfire had already consumed 113 acres by nightfall.
Firefighters spent the day trying to control the blaze as helicopters took water from Atsion Lake
to douse the flames.
That will likely just be the beginning of the fires in the highly
combustible Pinelands as the
hottest, driest months are still to
come.
Just last week, the area was
under a red flag warning issued
by the National Weather Service.
Also known as a fire weather

warning, the red flag is used to inform area firefighting and land
management agencies that conditions are ideal for wildland fire
combustion and rapid spread.
Basically, the humidity will be
below 30 percent and the wind
gusts will be over 25 miles per
hour to meet the criteria for a red
flag warning to be issued here,
said John Rieth, assistant forest
fire warden for Division B, one of
the New Jersey Forest Fire Services' three divisions.
Rieth said each region of the
country has a different criteria
because of things such as topography and vegetation.
The Pine Barrens is specifically susceptible to fast growing forest fires because of this vegetation growing underneath the pine

Marie Goodwin departs district for Medford

On April 13, the Shamong
Township Schools Board Administrator/Board Secretary, Marie
Goodwin, accepted the board secretary position with Medford
Township Public Schools.
Goodwin was thoroughly enjoying her time in Shamong and
had nothing but great things to
say about the district, but acknowledged the opportunity she
was presented with as a perfect fit
for her at this point in her accomplished career.
I absolutely loved it in Shamong, Goodwin said.
Goodwin completed her undergraduate work at Stockton State
College and obtained her masters
degree in business administration at Rider University.

Her professional career includes more than 20 years of experience working for the state Department of Education in several
capacities, including executive
county school business administrator and interim executive
county superintendent.
She has also served as a school
board member for both Springfield Township School District
and Northern Burlington County
Regional School District.
In 2014, she was appointed to
assume the role of the school
business
administrator/board
secretary position in Shamong.
I enjoyed it greatly, she said.
They have a strong administrative team that Im going to miss
dearly.

week, when the nations
largest health insurance provider,
UnitedHealthcare, said it plans to exit
most of the Affordable Care Act state
exchanges where it currently operates
by 2017.
The companys reasoning is quite
simple it is losing money ... a lot of
it. UnitedHealthcare said it lost $475
million in the state exchanges last
year and could lose another $500 million this year. Its tough to blame a
company for not continuing a moneylosing proposition such as this.
Those fighting Obamacare will say
this is an example of why the healthcare law doesnt work. Obamacare proponents will say adjustments to the
law and from insurers was bound
to happen.
But what everyone seems to overlook, and may have overlooked from
the beginning, is the problem is twofold: We need to fix not only the cost

and availability of health insurance

but that of health care as well.
Case in point: The price of Narcan,
a drug used to revive people who overdose on heroin, has soared recently.
The reason? No one is sure, but health
officials find it odd that as the drug is
becoming more prevalent, and more
states are using it, it is suddenly becoming more expensive to obtain.
New Jersey made the drug available
to all first responders in 2014, and
since that time, Narcan has been deployed almost 11,000 times in New Jersey.
Thats thousands of lives that were
saved from the drug.
New Jersey isnt the only state to
make Narcan readily available to first

responders, as more states are jumping on board as the success of it is

touted.
Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick
changed the states regulations to
make Narcan more widely available,
and soon after he did, the price of the
drug doubled in his state from $15 to
more than $30 per dose, according to
the states attorney general.
Its curious to see the cost increase
so rapidly as the drug gains more footing. Outsiders who dont know much
about the industry ourselves included would say it looks like a business
is taking advantage of a situation to
dramatically increase profits.
Maybe were wrong. Maybe there is
a reason that producing the life-saving
drug on a mass scale forces the cost of
doing so to rise substantially.
Or maybe its a small sign that the
problem with our countrys healthcare system isnt just that insurance is
out of whack; maybe health-care
providers need to be looked at as well.

Seneca Psychology Club Glow Run/Walk returns

Club hopes to surpass $1,500 raised for National Alliance on Mental Illness last year

One year ago, members of the Seneca
High School class of 2015 Cailey Talbot,
Morgan Lubner and Lauren Bogardus created a psychology club to raise mental
health awareness in their school.
Since then, the club has gained a large
number of new members from all grade
levels and expanded to more than just psychology students.
The three girls' ambitions have provid-

ed us with a solid backbone in order to continue the effect the club can have on the
Seneca family and community, Club Advisor Sean Kennevan said.
As the AP psychology teacher at the
high school, Kennevan seemed like the perfect person to approach with the idea of
starting the club.
The intended goal was to bring about
awareness to some serious illnesses and
help raise money for families affected by
them along the way.
It wasnt long before Kennevan handed

Learning to pitch difficult, Sweet says

helped her strike out more than
100 hitters last season and pitch
back-to-back shutouts in the 2015
South Jersey Group III tournament for Seneca. As a sophomore
in 2015, she was one of four pitchers named to the All-Olympic
Conference first team.
Sweets success can be attributed to her command and ability
to throw strikes. In Sweets first
five starts of 2016, she walked just
five batters and struck out 25, despite pitching almost every inning for the Golden Eagles in
those games.
Sweets command didnt develop overnight. She began learning
to pitch at Indian Mills softball at a
clinic softball director Kim Albertson ran. It took Sweet about two to
three years from when she started
pitching just to consistently throw
flat fastballs over the plate for
strikes. From there, it took an ad-

ditional two to three years to learn

how to consistently throw wellplaced moving pitches.
It was very difficult, Sweet
said. If you ask my coach Kim or
my dad, theyll tell people Oh
yeah, she used to hit the ceiling. I
had a lot of difficulty controlling
the ball, but I think I overcame
that.
Today, Sweet has two pitching
coaches. One is Tom Besser from
Elite Fastpitch Inc. The other is
Stacy Jackson, Sweets coach
with her travel team, South Jersey Mystics. Sweet credited both
of them with helping her become
the pitcher she is today.
Sweets ability to control pitches isnt due to anything she does
differently with her mechanics
compared to other high school
pitchers.
Its all mental, Sweet said. If
I throw a ball, I try to focus again
so I can throw a strike and get
back. The support from everyone
else on the field helps me to push
the strikes.
Sweet can throw a variety of

moving pitches, including multiple variations of a curveball and

screwball. Sweet places her
curveball in different locations
based on the count. Sweet uses
her screwball to help keep hitters
off balance.
Screwballs I like to use because it gets a lot of foul balls, especially when you throw it up and
in, you get a lot of foul balls into
the backstop, Sweet said. Its
hard to get around on that.
Its a lot of where you put
your hip, Sweet said about locating her pitches. If you put your
hip a quarter-inch to the inside,
then its going to go to the inside.
If you point it a quarter-inch to
the outside, it will go outside.
The one area where Sweet is focused on improving is finishing
strikeouts.
A lot of times, I get two strikes
and I struggle to get that swing
and miss, she said. I could save
my arm a lot if I could throw less
pitches and if I could get further

in five innings on April 14.
The Golden Eagles scored four
runs in the fifth inning to end the
game early via the 10-run rule.

The club meets periodically
throughout each semester to hold
discussions regarding plans for
fundraising opportunities. It held
its first big event on May 29, 2015,
and was able to raise $1,500 to support the National Alliance on
Mental Illness, the nation's largest
grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better
lives for millions of Americans affected by mental illness.
All money was raised through
t-shirts the club sold and donations from the Seneca family.
The Glow Run/Walk is a student-driven initiative intended to
raise mental health awareness
and make a difference in the community. This year, students have
had much more time to prepare
for the Glow Run/Walk and have
made a collaborative effort to enhance the event.
It will take place May 13 at the

high school from 7 to 10 p.m. and

will include food, glow games
such as KanJam, Cornhole and
ring toss with glowing features
and runners/walkers decorated
with glow-in-the-dark paint and
glow bracelets and necklaces.
The event will be open to the
community this year in an attempt to make a difference and
shine some light in the encompassing darkness of those who
suffer from mental illness, as
Kennevan put it.
This years Glow Run/Walk will
also play host to a live student
band that will play in the football
stadium throughout the event.
The psychology club has made
it a priority to surpass the
amount of donations to NAMI
from last year, to raise the level of
awareness on the severity of the
struggle these individuals face
and to break down the stigma and
stereotypes associated with mental illness.
Its great to have our Seneca
family gathered in the stadium
with one common goal in mind
and to make a difference in our
community, Kennevan said. We
look forward to surpassing our
goals from last year and getting
more people involved.

together as a team, Goodwin
said.
Marie brought with her a
wealth of knowledge and years of
experience that helped to implement a variety of initiatives in

the Shamong school district,

The most recent projects included air conditioning at the elementary school and district-wide
security upgrades.
She also played an integral role
in bringing the districts operations enhanced new accounting
software and implementing the
new electronic board meetings.
She deferred much of the
praise, crediting her administrative team for always working
closely and collaboratively on
each of the district's goals in an

efficient manner.
Thats all due to the leadership of the superintendent. She is
a great leader, and I was lucky to
have my time with her, Goodwin
said.
The position for school business administrator/board secretary has been advertised on the
school district website, as well as
on numerous education employment websites.
According to Vespe, the interview process will begin shortly
with the hopes of finding a successful candidate to fill the position in the coming months.
Goodwin will assume her new
position in Medford on June 13.
It has been a pleasure to work
with Marie, and her knowledge
and dedication to the district will
be missed, Vespe said.

Sweet is only a little more than
halfway through her high school
career, but she already knows
where she is going to college. She
plans to attend The College of
New Jersey beginning in the fall
of 2017.
They have a great engineering
program there and I love the
coach, Sally Miller, Sweet said.
Shes great and a very fun and
skilled person. Itll be a great way
to finish off my years of softball
and start off my life in engineering.
Moving forward in 2016, Sweet
is hopeful Seneca can make a
deep playoff run. The Golden Eagles started the season with a 4-2
record. Sweets pitching has kept
Seneca competitive in most of the
games.
Were a very young team,
Sweet said. Were bound to make
mistakes. We can definitely be
further ahead, but I dont have
any worries about the future.

Other areas in New Jersey and
across the country contain taller
trees with leaves that shade the
forest floor and negate most
plants from growing.
The Pinelands contain shrubs
that can catch fire and spread the
blaze faster than it typically does
in most areas.
Not necessarily bigger fires, I
would say more rapid fires is
more accurate, Rieth said.
Unfortunately, rapid fires are
the hardest to keep under control,
and the surrounding environment permits this with the number of pine trees, pine needles,
bark and branches in close proximity. All of these factors are referred to as fuels by the New
Jersey Forest Fire Service.
However, the most uncontrollable fuel is the wind. Wind helps
dry out the fuels more quickly
with no wind it would be harder
for needles, leaves and grasses to
dry fast enough between rainfalls
to create any real wildfire threat.
Wind is also unpredictable in
the sense that it can shift and
change directions at a moment's
notice.

There is typically a sea breeze

for the Pinelands region that
stretches closer to the shoreline,
but wind direction is never 100
percent foreseeable.
Wind changes the direction of
radiant heat, Rieth said. Hot air
rises above the fire and the wind
blows hot embers and particles
ahead of the fire, producing spot
fires. Eventually, multiple spot
fires in a general vicinity meet
and thats what we call a blow
up.
More than half of New Jerseys wildfires are detected by the
towers dispersed throughout the
state. The folks stationed in these
towers conduct weather readings
and will adjust their sign accordingly based on the results.
If conditions are extreme, they
will set the sign to high fire danger. At this time, the service is authorized to pull from its 1,200
part-time employees to add to its
staff on duty manning the fire
trucks. The fire trucks, helicopters and bulldozers are all in constant contact with the towers
through radios and telephone
lines.
Once the fire is called in, three
trucks that can hold up to 500 gallons of water each, equipment for
the firefighters and a bulldozer
are dispatched to the scene.
We can dispatch proper help
at the first whiff of smoke, Rieth

said.
The state protects 3.1 million
acres, 122,880 of which make up
Wharton State Forest.
Being that New Jersey is one of
the most densely populated states
in the country, fires beginning
anywhere in Wharton State Forest will likely come into contact
with civilization within an hour
or two, whereas a forest fire in a
state such as Montana can burn
for days before anyones lives are
at risk.
Residents of the Pine Barrens
are encouraged by the New Jersey Forest Fire Service to protect
themselves by having a clearance
of little or no vegetation around
their home, so if something
catches fire it is not as challenging to keep from spreading to a
wildfire.
The service also urges folks to
use stone instead of mulch, invest
in non-combustible siding and
shingles, use ashtrays if smoking
and to be proactive with keeping
their property maintained.
If lawns are mowed, leaves are
raked and trash is taken out,
there are fewer fuels laying
around for fires to catch onto.
Most importantly, call 911
right away so fire suppression
people can respond as quickly as
possible, Rieth said. The faster
they get there, the less damage
will be done in the long run.
