Voorhees parents might be

used to teaching lessons to their
children, but soon parents will
have a chance to learn some lessons of their own regarding an
all-too-important issue drug
abuse.
On May 2, Voorhees Middle
School and the Voorhees Police
Department will partner to present Michael DeLeon and his
Steered Straight Parent Academy.
DeLeon, a former drug addict
who spent 12 years in prison,
founded Steered Straight in 2000
as a juvenile delinquency intervention and prevention program.
Throughout the evening, presenters will work to give parents
an overview of the ongoing drug
abuse epidemic in New Jersey
and the latest drug trends with
which children are dealing.
Since the program was founded, its spread not only throughout New Jersey, but across multiple states.
Now for the first time, the program will be coming to Voorhees
Middle School, and the district is
looking for as many parents to at-

tend as possible.
Parents who attend the program will learn about the signs
and symptoms of drug abuse to
watch for in their children, as
well as tips and advice to help
them stop drug and alcohol abuse
from affecting children before it
starts.
According to Voorhees Township Public Schools coordinator
of special projects Susan Donnelly, the district decided to hold the
event because the abuse of heroin
and other hard drugs throughout
the state, and South Jersey in particular, has moved out of the
cities and into the suburbs.
There has been an increase
everywhere in the use of opiates
and heroin and a turn from prescription medications simply because heroin has become cheaper

Crowd-funding workshop set for April 29

Interested residents can learn
how to harness the power
of the Internet to help fund a project.
On Friday, April 29, from 7 to 8
p.m., the Camden County Library
System is offering a workshop on
crowd-funding at the Voorhees Library to help interested parties
learn about what crowd-funding
is and how it works.
Crowd-funding platforms can
be confusing and intimidating

places whether running a campaign to generate funding for a

personal project or looking for
creative projects to support financially.
Matthew Meyer will explain
the basic principles and theories
behind crowd-funding and offer
advice on running a successful
campaign.
Meyer is a local author and
artist who has successfully run
two Kickstarter campaigns that

have generated more than $45,000

combined. He also maintains an
active Patreon account with more
than 40 monthly subscribers.
Hell share some of the lessons he
has learned along the way, offer
some tips to maximize success
and answer questions about his
experiences.
In addition to Kickstarter,
Meyer is expected to discuss
other platforms such as IndieGoGo and GoFundMe.

Eastern golf gets confidence boost

with team title at Camden County Open

BIG GUYS

Vikings win tournament after finishing as runner-up in 2015

By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
The Eastern Regional High
School golf team has gradually
improved its finish at the Camden
County Open the past three years.
In 2014, Eastern finished in
third place.
In 2015, the Vikings finished in
second place in the tournament.
This year, Eastern finally finished on top, winning the team
competition on April 18 at Tavistock Country Club in Haddonfield.
The Vikings shot a team total
of 341 on the 18-hole course to finish in first place, edging second
place Haddonfield by just two
strokes.
Just as the Vikings have improved their Camden County
Open finishes, the 2016 team is

improving as this season wears

on. The Camden County Open
victory is the high point for the
team after it started the season
with a 1-4 record.
We needed to win this to get
our confidence back, junior
Rahil Patel said. We still have a
shot at the conference.
Easterns losses came against
tough competition, including undefeated Washington Township
High School and one-loss teams
Lenape High School and Shawnee
High School. Two of the matches
were also very close. Eastern only
lost to Shawnee by one stroke and
to Lenape by five strokes.
Our early losses have showed
were resilient and we can still
push through and play better in
the future, senior Aryaman
Shanigaram said.
The Vikings faced more chal-

lenges on the course at Tavistock.

The team played on the first nine
holes of the course during an
early season scrimmage. Outside
of that, however, the foursome of
Shanigaram, Patel and sophomores Justin Choi and Joel Hark
were not familiar with the course.
The greens were very slopey
and fast, Shanigaram said of the
course.
The rough was a good four
inches thick, Hark added.
Hark was Easterns secondhighest scorer, shooting an 11over-par 83. He made adjustments
at the tee box throughout the day.
The biggest challenge for me
personally, it was my own driver
swing and just hitting through
shots, Hark said.
Easterns foursome would

in our opinion

Reform needed on health care, too

108 Kings Highway East

Haddonfield, NJ 08033
856-427-0933

Fixing only the insurance aspect of health care doesnt truly solve the problem
Dan McDonough Jr.

bamacare opponents had an I

told you so moment last
week, when the nations
largest health insurance provider,
UnitedHealthcare, said it plans to exit
most of the Affordable Care Act state
exchanges where it currently operates
by 2017.
The companys reasoning is quite
simple it is losing money ... a lot of
it. UnitedHealthcare said it lost $475
million in the state exchanges last
year and could lose another $500 million this year. Its tough to blame a
company for not continuing a moneylosing proposition such as this.
Those fighting Obamacare will say
this is an example of why the healthcare law doesnt work. Obamacare proponents will say adjustments to the
law and from insurers was bound
to happen.
But what everyone seems to overlook, and may have overlooked from
the beginning, is the problem is twofold: We need to fix not only the cost

and availability of health insurance

but that of health care as well.
Case in point: The price of Narcan,
a drug used to revive people who overdose on heroin, has soared recently.
The reason? No one is sure, but health
officials find it odd that as the drug is
becoming more prevalent, and more
states are using it, it is suddenly becoming more expensive to obtain.
New Jersey made the drug available
to all first responders in 2014, and
since that time, Narcan has been deployed almost 11,000 times in New Jersey.
Thats thousands of lives that were
saved from the drug.
New Jersey isnt the only state to
make Narcan readily available to first

responders, as more states are jumping on board as the success of it is

touted.
Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick
changed the states regulations to
make Narcan more widely available,
and soon after he did, the price of the
drug doubled in his state from $15 to
more than $30 per dose, according to
the states attorney general.
Its curious to see the cost increase
so rapidly as the drug gains more footing. Outsiders who dont know much
about the industry ourselves included would say it looks like a business
is taking advantage of a situation to
dramatically increase profits.
Maybe were wrong. Maybe there is
a reason that producing the life-saving
drug on a mass scale forces the cost of
doing so to rise substantially.
Or maybe its a small sign that the
problem with our countrys healthcare system isnt just that insurance is
out of whack; maybe health-care
providers need to be looked at as well.

Kresson Road improvements to begin on May 5

Voorhees Township has several Camden
County-owned roads that are maintained
and repaired by the county. Kresson Road
is one of them, and it will be repaired and
repaved by Camden County starting the
week of May 5, with construction expected
to continue until October.
Camden County has begun a 10-year
road repair plan, budgeting $25 million per
year, with Kresson Road part of the first
years plans. The road will be paved from
Evesham Road to just west of Route 73.
Concrete curb and driveway work will be
the first phase with the actual paving

scheduled for August. Completion is

planned before the
start of the school
year. There are no
plans for the road
to be closed, although there will
be times where
only one lane will
be open to traffic.

will be from 7 a.m.

Program includes
assemblies for students
PROGRAM

to get, Donnelly said.
In addition to the program for
parents, Donnelly said Steered
Straight would also hold an assembly for the districts seventhand eighth-grade students during
the school day where two former
addicts would speak to students
about their experiences with
drug addiction.
Donnelly said the former addicts would then also speak to
parents, but from the perspective
of how they kept their addiction
hidden from their parents and
what signs parents should look

for.
Donnelly, who previously sampled the program in the district
where her children go to school,
said it was worth bringing to the
parents and students of Voorhees.
Its just a great education opportunity, Donnelly said.
For those parents interested in
attending the Steered Straight
Parent Academy, the event will be
held on May 2 at 7 p.m. in the
Voorhees Middle School Theater.
The event is free to attend and
does not require registration.
Parents are also encouraged to
bring their adolescent and
teenaged children as well.
We cant be in denial, Donnelly said. One bad choice could
lead to a whole lot more.

overcome numerous challenges
to have a solid day. Patel led the
Vikings with a 9-over-par 81. Patel
said he was motivated playing
with Highland Regional High
Schools Jake Storako, the tournaments individual winner for the
third consecutive season.
He was hitting every single
shot really nice, Patel said. I
just wanted to keep up with him. I

like playing with better people. It

helps me want to play better.
Even more important than
winning the Camden County
Open has been the upward trajectory of the Vikings. The team
shot a 173 in the opening match
against Washington Township.
The team has shot a lower score
in every match since.
Were trying to not do too
much and play with what were
good at, Shanigaram said.
Choi said this years team is
tighter than in the past, and the
bond between the golfers has
helped the team improve over the

past few weeks.

The Camden County Open title
is just a small triumph in a season with numerous tournaments
still to come. Eastern still has to
compete in the Olympic Conference Tournament and the Carl
Arena/Al Rifkin Memorial Golf
Tournament featuring schools
from all around South Jersey.
Choi believes the team needs to
improve its consistency if it
wants to win more hardware later
in the season.
Were trying to have the good
moments when it matters, Choi
said.
