something we want to claim for

ourselves, to pass on to yet another
generation?

Keeping the Faith

Christianity has a DNA, passed down
through the generations. Many of us
learned what it is to be faithful at our
family dinner table, during family
prayers, in the midst of heated family
discussions where we were taught
that it is more important to love than
to be right. Thats the family DNA of
faith.
Many of us were dedicated or
baptized in the church when we
were just tiny, with the promise of a
church family to raise us in the faith
of Jesus. And Church School
teachers took their day off to tell us
the stories of our faith, and pastors
took us under their wing as we
entered our teenage years, to help
us ask questions about our faith. And
we worked at soup kitchens and
rummage sales and potlucks to give
flesh to our faith. Thats the
community DNA of faith.
Spiritual genetics are key and core
to our growth as spiritual beings; but
nurture can only go so far. Then we
have to claim the Life of Faith for
ourselves.
And
thats
what
Confirmation is all about. Weve
been raised, and loved, and
nurtured in the Christian faith; is this

May 15, Alex Teerlinck, Megan Alaimo,

Sawyer Bensing, Ashley Bonestroo, and
Robb Colon will be coming forth to
claim the Christian faith for themselves.
In their Confirmation, they will be living
examples that faith is not just passed
down, but has to be embraced if it is to
become a vital, living reality in our lives.
These five youths have spent the past 8
months discussing the faith in Round
Table discussions and living out their
faith in mission projects. It has been a
privilege for me to work with them
(okay, sometimes they got kind of
screwy, but that was kind of fun, too!)
They are an intelligent, thoughtful, funloving group of youths whom I have
greatly enjoyed. And it is with great
pride that we will see them step forward
as young adults in the Christian faith,
embracing a way of life that is larger
than they are, and more powerful than
they can yet imagine.
Gods blessings, Confirmands!
Love,
Pastor Hawkins

Theres a reason why we usually* hold Confirmation on

Pentecost
(*usually because when Pentecost lands on
Memorial Day weekend, we choose another Sunday so families
can be there) Its because it is the Festival of Vision, of
Empowerment, and of Inclusion! Its the day on which, 1,983
years ago, the Holy Spirit fell upon a group of frightened,
confused and unlikely disciples to give them purpose, courage
and meaning. Thats what I yearn for in my life: purpose,
courage and meaning. How about you? The red that we wear
on Pentecost; the red geraniums we bring to decorate the altar
are symbols of this passionate outpouring of Spirit that we crave
in our own lives. May it be so. May it
be that on May 15, when we
celebrate this festival of Vision,
Empowerment and Inclusion, that the
Spirit would fall upon us as well, that
our lives might be full of the glory of
the Risen Christ!

DONATE BLOOD
Monday, May 9
1:30-6:30PM
Dousman Community Center
The May Community Blood Drive is in
honor of the late Richard Stephan who
lost his battle with leukemia in 2012.
Richard was a life-long Dousman
resident with a passion for his
community. He served 48 years on the
Dousman Fire Department. (note from
Donna- during my parents declining
years they lived on the 3 Pillars
Campus. We had need to call for ambulance service on a
number of occasions and Richard was ALWAYS one of the
people who responded with the ambulance no matter the time
of day or night). He was also passionate about blood donation,
having donated more than 100 units during his lifetime.
The need for an adequate blood supply is ongoing. Your
donations are what supply all of our local hospitals. A number of
our members have in the past or are currently benefiting from
the availability of donated blood products.
Please consider taking an hour out of your day on May 9th to
give a unit of blood. You may make an appointment online at
www.bcw.edu/dousman or by calling Carole at 262-965-2384.
Walk-in donors are also WELCOME!

EXTRA ! EXTRA!
Emmanuel U.C.C.of Dousman, WI helps its national ministries
become successful and sustainable.
Really? How can we do this?
By giving a little

EXTRA ! EXTRA! on May 15th.

In the past, we have provided support to Our Churchs Wider

Mission and the four Special Mission Offerings: One Great Hour of
Sharing, Strengthen The Church, Neighbors In Need and The
Christmas Fund. We are at the point of the cycle to support the
mission Strengthen The Church. On May 15 we will be taking a
special collection for this mission. Strengthen the Church offering
envelopes are located in the fellowship pads on the sanctuary
chairs. This is an offering to re-imagine and build the future of the
UCC.
Through these funds collected in May, new churches will be
supported. Youth and young adults will receive training to
develop their spiritual life. Fresh ideas will be nurtured in existing
churches. Grants will be given to help promote our message:
"God is still speaking."
Please give generously. Thank you!

SUNDAY SCHOOL
Palm Sunday started out with the movie "The Prodigal Son" and
was a big hit! Thank you to Peggy Hazelberg for coming up with
this great idea and putting it all together. The kids did a
wonderful job portraying this story. Way to go! On Easter Sunday
the children took part in an Easter egg hunt. We started our next
set of lessons on The Disciples. The kids learned what it means to
"fish for people" as we are disciples teaching others about Jesus.
The Disciples will be the topic for the rest of our lessons this school
year. Our last day of Sunday School will be May 22.
There are still lots of opportunities to be Acolyte...please sign
up...watch for continuing sign up genius requests! And thank
you for helping. And don't forget to bring in some extra money if
you can for our offering. At the end of the year the money will
be donated to HAWS.
Thank you!
The Christian Ed Team.

On Palm Sunday the kids put costumes on

got into character for Easter Week Freeze
frames!!

Singing Bowl FOR MAY...

Continuing our focus from March and April, our

Singing Bowl donations in May will give financial aid
to a Central American family of 5 in River Falls, WI
that is seeking assylum. Our donations will help with
rent costs for the family.Thank you for your continued support
and generosity!

MISSIONS OF EMMANUEL
Family Promise

What an enjoyable week we had as Emmanuel hosted a full

house to begin our host week April 10 for Family Promise. Twelve
guests started their week at church. We served Emily and her 15
month old daughter, Ashley and her 1 year old, Jenn and her 13
year old daughter and Mayisha and Tyriell with their four children
ages 8, 5, 3 and 1. Shortly into the week, Emily moved out when
she found a home near a bus line which will enable her to get to
work. During the week, we experienced schedule changes and
illnesses due to the flu. Saturday evening we welcomed a father
and his son so we were back to full capacity.
Our new carts (donated by Ann & Bill Carpenter...thank you!)
helped the guests move their belongings into and out of their
bedrooms. Our volunteers made our guests feel welcomed and
provided plenty of food to satisfy their appetites. We had new
games and crafts for them to enjoy. Our thanks to all (which
includes volunteers from St. Marys and St. Brunos) who helped
make the week a great success.
The next training session will be May 15 for those who wish to
volunteer but have not taken the workshop. Details can be
found on the Family Promise website.
If you have any suggestions in regard to the program, feel free to
talk to Sue Stelling, Charlotte Voigt or the meal coordinator,
Mary Edwards.

There is a power in the universe forever on the side of those

brave enough to trust it.
