For my mom

This Mother’s Day

You came into my life when I was nine.

So much catching up to do – I was way behind.

Lost, battle-weary and scarred,

I sensed life with you would never be as hard

As the one I would now leave forever in the past.

But I can remember people saying, “It will never last!”

Because I was terribly rebellious, difficult, moody - though smart,

And somehow you never gave up on what you saw in my heart.

You took the broken pieces of me lying like shards on the floor,

And swept them up into your most loving core.

You nourished and nurtured my body, soul and mind

And guided me to learn that an open heart will find

More love than sorrow in a world filled with strife.

Your example taught me how to make of my life

Anything I could dream…just use my brain.

You were there to support me when I fell, was in pain.

And I love you for all that you’ve done and still do –

Let me say it again, “Mom, I love YOU!”
