Acids and Bases - Translation

1. According to the Bronsted-Lowry theory an acid is a proton donor

while a base is a proton acceptor.

2. An alkali is a base that dissolves in water to produce hydroxide

ions.

3. Acids react with metals to produce hydrogen gas and with

carbonates to produce carbon dioxide.

4. In an acidic solution the acid donates protons to water molecules

to form oxonium ions.

5. When an acid donates a proton it leaves behind its conjugate

base. Every acid has a conjugate base and every base has a

conjugate acid.

6. A substance that can behave as both an acid and a base, such as

water, is called amphoteric.

7. If an acid and its conjugate base have different colours they can be

used as an indicator.
