DELHI PUBLIC SCHOOL, GURGAON

MONDAY TEST IV, TERM II (2014-15)

SUBJECT: PHYSICS
CLASS: XI (Set A)
Time: 1Hr. 20 min
No. of pages: 02

MM: 40

General Instructions:
All questions are compulsory.
Marks are indicated against each question.
1. State two important characteristics of a geosynchronous orbit.

(1)

2. An air bubble rises in water tank. Plot a graph to show the variation of its velocity with
time?
(1)
3. What determines the shape of a liquid meniscus in a container?

(1)

4. The stress-strain graphs for materials A and B are shown below. The graphs are drawn to
the same scale.

(a) Which of the material has greater Youngs modulus?

(b) Which material is more ductile?
(c) Which is more brittle?
(d) Which of the two is stronger material?

(2)

5. What is the largest average velocity of blood flow in an artery of radius 2 10 3 m if the
flow must remain laminar? Take viscosity of blood to be 2 10 3 Pa s and density of
blood = 1.06 103 kg m-3.
(2)
6. Establish equation of continuity of liquid flow.

(2)

7. Deduce an expression for gravitational potential at a point on the surface of earth.

(3)

8. At what distance(s) from the centre of the earth, does the value of acceleration due to
gravity become 20% of its value on the earth surface? Given that the radius of the earth =
6400km.
(3)

XI/PHY/A1

9. Obtain an expression for the excess pressure inside a liquid drop. How does it change in
case of a soap bubble?
(3)
10. Deduce Torricellis theorem. How far from the base of a container having liquid filled up
to a height H, does the liquid emerging from a small hole in it at a height h(<H) fall?
(3)
11. Explain why:
(1 x 3 = 3)
a. A spinning cricket ball in air does not follow a parabolic trajectory.
b. Detergents have better cleansing action than ordinary water.
c. Pressure exerted by a liquid at a point does not depend on the shape of the
container.
12. Two heavy spheres each of mass 100 kg and radius 0.10 m are placed 1.0 m apart on a
horizontal table. What is the gravitational field and potential at the midpoint of the line
joining the centres of the spheres? An object placed at a particular point on the line
joining the centres of the two spheres is at equilibrium, will the equilibrium be stable or
unstable? Justify.
(3)
13. Two wires of diameter 0.25 cm, one made of steel and other made of brass are loaded as
shown here. The unloaded length of steel wire is 1.5 m and that of brass wire is 1.0 m.
Youngs modulus of steel is 2.0 1011 Pa and that of brass is 0.91 1011 Pa. Compute the
elongations of steel and brass wires.
(3)

14. What is meant by capillarity? Deduce an expression for the excess height of a liquid
inside a capillary tube. Why does level of some liquids fall inside the capillary tube?
(1+3+1)
15. What is meant by escape speed? Obtain the expression for the escape speed on earth.
Why is it that there is not atmosphere on the moon?
(1+3+1)
