The first day of May May Day in many countries around the world. The day represents for
many the end to the long nights of cold, damp weather, and the beginning of the summer
months. The Vernal Equinox (Spring for most of us) evened out the long nights and shorter
days. Now the daylight hours lengthen; the world seems to have a new purpose.
When Annie and I lived in France, people reveled in the warmer, sunnier days. The winter
and spring brought cold, damp rains and snow. On the first of May, everyone was on the
streets. It was the only day of the whole year that anyone could sell on the streets without
a license. Long ago, the tradition began to sell bouquets of muguet (lily of the valley). Anyone who had a garden, or, perhaps secretly plucked a few from a friends garden, could sell
the wonderfully fragrant bouquets on the street. The price one fetched depended upon how
good a salesperson one was. I am sure that many a person who had muguet planted in their own backyard
bought more than one bouquet just to feel the freedom of knowing that he/she had participated in an old
tradition.
Almost as if a miracle had occurred, the people flowed out into the formerly barren streets and came to life.
The community that had always been there had simply been hidden.
What would it look like if our own communities around the world had the same amount of empathy or compassion for one another every day of the year? How could the world change if, instead of wondering,
Whats in it for me? our communities began asking, How can this help our community to grow?
Throughout Easter Season, we have heard a continuous reading from the Revelation according to John. In
that writing, John puts forth two simultaneous visions: one in heaven and one on earth. In heaven, the martyrs and the faithful gather in continual worship of the lamb slain since the foundation of the world. On
earth, all has gone awry: pestilence and plague wreak havoc on all the nations. It seems that the governments and entities in charge have wrought great harm on themselves because of self-centered pride. Miraculously, at the end of the vision, John reveals that the place for God is among mortals averting total annihilation.
There is a vision that God has for the world: it is a place that from the beginning God called, very
good (according to Genesis); yet, somehow the very matrix of life itself has gone wrong: war, pollution, division, hatred, pride, gluttony, avarice, and more, have all turned humanity into some creation of our own
that is less than humanity. The churchs constant role in the world is one of bringing together the followers
of Jesus, for the sake of revealing Gods salvation for the world not for a select few, not for a moral majority, but for the whole world.
Again, I ask, what would it look like if the Church lived up to her expectations? How different would the
world be if the followers of Jesus took seriously their role to bring together, not divide?
What do you think?
Peace,
Pr. Tim

FREE MONTHLY
BLOOD PRESSURE SCREENINGS
As part of our emphasis on taking care of our physical well being, along with our spiritual
well being...the Outreach and Evangelism Ministry Team has scheduled an opportunity for Blood Pressure
Checks for members who wish to participate. These will be done in the library, during Fellowship Hour, on
the first Sunday of the month, beginning May 1. You will also receive a handy pocket / wallet sized trifold card to keep track of your readings. The checks will be performed by members of Zions who are
nurses - and will be coordinated by Angela Mack. Feel free to see her if you have any questions!

Reyes Family Fence Project for Outreach

An Outreach project that has come to light is for the Reyes family here in
Defiance. The family has 5 children, 4 of which have special needs, 3 of
which are autistic. They live on a busy street in Defiance, and recently one
of the children broke through a screen in a window and was lost for a short
period of time. Since that incident, metal bars have been installed on the
windows, however they believe that a fenced in back yard would increase the safety of their children.
This request for help has come from a case worker at Defiance County Job and Family Services and they
will be coordinating the efforts. The project will involve that agency, Habitat for Humanity with student
volunteers doing the install, and Zions spearheading the fundraising. The estimate for the fence is $1500.
Zions will also be providing the meal and snacks for the workers on the day of the install.
We are now able to introduce you to the Reyes family:
Parents are Tom Reyes and Sarah Wagner. Tom was injured in a motor vehicle accident many years ago
leaving work and has leg and back injuries. Sarah is a stay at home mother at this time, and helps the children complete ECOT at home on a daily basis.
Johnathan is 12 years old. Johnathan has severe ADHD and enjoys helping his mother and father with the
younger children.
Reese is 6. Reese has been diagnosed with Autism and is a spit fire! He loves to run around as much as he
can!
Anthony and Antonio are 5 year old twins. They are very polite young boys who have also been diagnosed with Autism.
Celina is 4. She shows multiple signs of Autism however has not been diagnosed at this time. She loves
cowgirl boots and smiling a TON!
Please consider donating to this community project truly a collaborative effort. Donations can be placed
in the offering plate; note that it is for the fence project.

Serenity Haven Outreach Project

One of the most alarming and immediate problems in Northwest Ohio is the rising
rate of heroin, opiate and other addictions. This problem knows no social class
boundaries, and most everyone that you speak to has a friend or family member
that has been affected in some way.
The Outreach and Evangelism Ministry Team has been asking themselveswhat can we do?
In the past couple of years, we have hosted Substance Abuse Awareness forums, in an effort to educate the average person about the problem. We had decent attendance, but
were still left feeling like we were not doing enough. It has been noted though, that other
organizations have been hosting similar forums, so maybe we helped in some way to encourage the education process in the whole community.
This year our idea is to help combat the problem by assisting those who are in treatment
and fighting for recovery, and those workers who are on the front line fighting the addictions and helping with recoveries. One such facility that has had success with treatment is
Serenity Haven in Fayette, Oh. It is an in-patient facility for 16 women who are recovering
and it is part of Recovery Services of NW Ohio that has its office here in Defiance, and
serves all of NW Ohio.
After speaking with the director about something they need, that they typically do not
have funding for, we have made the decision to assist them with the painting and updating
of the interior of the facility. A group of us toured the facility on Sunday, April 10th, and
verified that it is sorely in need. And, a fresh coat of paint can always help brighten a persons day! My best guess-timate at this time as to a cost for the paint and painting supplies
is somewhere between $500-800. The facility has 4-5 large common areas, kitchen, and 9
bedrooms. We will also be doing other projects for this womens facilityand going forward, we hope to reach out to the mens in-patient facility for recovery also.
Please consider a donation to this project or participating in the mentoring.
The ladies will be helping themselves by doing the painting we will provide
funds, guidance and mentoring!

RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE

Zions will be hosting a blood drive on Sunday, May 15, from 11:00
a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The blood drive is open to anyone, not just members of Zions, so please encourage your neighbors, family members
and friends to schedule a time to donate blood on this day. (More information
about the Rapid Pass program is provided on page 14.) Our church will be supplying food and Brookview Healthcare Center will be providing beverages. If you
would like to donate blood or help make food for the blood drive, please see Laurie
Schey, Angela Mack, or Donna Schindler.
