CERBERUS FOR WIRELINE

Leading modeling software for planning and performing

Weak Point: Surface weight range in which weak

point will break.

Maximum Weight: Surface weight at which cable

tension reaches its working limit.

Features

Flow and Pressure Effects

Fishing and Stuck Tools
Cable Damage Prevention
Real-Time Monitoring

Overview
Cerberus for Wireline is unique software for planning the deployment of cableconveyed tools, especially in highly deviated or complex trajectory wells, by
modeling the cumulative mechanical and hydraulic forces to ensure the target
depth can be reached, the job performed, and the tools returned to surface
safely and efficiently with the chosen equipment.

Measured Data: Plot measured data for

comparison with model predictions.
Drum Crush Warning: POOH tension is
significantly greater than RIH tension, risk of
drum crush and torque damage to the cable.

First introduced in 1999, Cerberus for Wireline is relied upon by service

companies and operators worldwide for planning and performing logging,
perforating, and slickline operations in open and cased hole.

Hydraulics Calculations: For cased hole applications the model

considers hydraulic as well as mechanical forces, so Cerberus can
provide warnings if shear drag might prevent the toolstring from
getting downhole past existing production, or if flow after perforating
may push the guns uphole and damage the cable. Understanding the
different forces in play can be important, especially for marginal
scenarios. If the problem is primarily flow-related, adding tool weight
or reducing the flow at the wellhead may be the solution. If the problem
is mainly drag, then rollers or friction reducing fluids may help. The
sensitivity analysis wizard allows comparison of different options
side-by-side, to see if the job can be performed within acceptable
margins of risk.

Compression: Indicates the cable tension is too low, and you

cannot go beyond this depth.

Overpull: Change of surface weight between pulling out of hole

normally and breaking the weak point. A large overpull is desirable.

Compensate for cable stretch in deviated wells

Tool Deployment Modeling for Wireline and Slickline Operations

Cerberus guides the user through complex configuration and job design tasks with the help of
numerous Wizards. Stepping the user through key decisions in a logical and intelligent sequence,
these software tools present choices based on previous selections. Cable and tool selections are
made from pre-defined databases, while electronic survey data can be imported from external files
or spreadsheets.
Cerberus results can be presented several ways, with varying degrees of complexity. The Surface
Weight vs. Depth often provides a quick assessment of the job feasibility. Problems like cable
compression during RIH or overpull while POOH are clearly flagged. Other important graphs include
maximum pull capability (for fishing or freeing a stuck tool), stretch (for depth corrections), and
tractor pull requirements. All these results are captured in the Cerberus Wireline Report.

The Q&A Wizard, especially helpful to new or infrequent users, provides access to the most important calculations. Just click on questions, such as "Can I reach the
target depth and return to surface safely? or "What production flow rate would prevent the tools getting downhole?." Available questions change depending on
conveyance method. Examples shown here are for wireline applications.
Selecting the Toolstring is concerned with the tool configuration and
weak point selection, including the effect of knuckle joints,
centralizers and rollers on your ability to navigate doglegs and
restrictions in the well.

Getting Into and Out of the Well addresses the fundamental issue of
whether the chosen toolstring can reach the required depth, especially
in a deviated or flowing well, and be retrieved safely to surface once
the job is complete.

Cerberus as a Training Tool

Educate new engineers on complex deployment issues
Test knowledge of experienced engineers
Pre-qualify field personnel for critical operations
Safer than the wellsite, and effective

Cable Tension Wizard: Large tension differentials on the drum

during spooling, a potential source of drum crush and torque damage,
can be anticipated by modeling the cable tension and its distribution
on the drum following a sequence of jobs. The cable can then be pretensioned accordingly, or a powered sheave allocate for the job. This
unique feature can be invaluable for planning operations in the deep,
highly deviated wells frequently encountered today, where tensions
can approach the working limits of the cable and spooling equipment.

Performing the Job At Depth ensures that, once downhole, you have
sufficient maneuvering room to perform the job or deal with
contingencies. For example, how much tension can you pull at
surface if you get stuck or need to fish, or how much risk is there of
flow pushing the tools uphole after perforating.

Cerberus as a Sales Tool

Demonstrate superior understanding of job design
Discuss possible contingencies with the customer
Justify equipment selection and wellsite procedures
Generate professional reports as a permanent record
Meet and exceed due diligence requirements

Toolfit Wizard (BHA Analysis): This feature can answer basic

geometry questions, such as what size tool will pass a given dogleg
without bending, but it can also solve advanced engineering problems
involving bending of complex tool configurations, taking into account
the effect of knuckle joints and centralizers. Using "stiff string"
modeling methods and finite element analysis developed by CTES,
this feature is used to design large BHAs like directional drilling
assemblies, but can also be used to model wireline-conveyed logging
tools, casing guns, and so on. Results are sometimes counterintuitive for example, using knuckle joints may make it more difficult
to navigate a bend, not easier.

Weak Point: Engineers tend to underestimate the higher forces

encountered in a deviated well, making it all too easy to choose the
wrong weak point for the job, with potentially catastrophic results.
Cerberus includes a design wizard to help select the optimum weak
point rating sufficiently low that it will activate before the cable
working limit is reached, should it be necessary to pull free, but
sufficiently high that increased drag does not cause it to activate
unintentionally in normal running conditions.

Other Calculations includes modeling for stuck tools and extended

reach, as well as reporting and sensitivity analysis tools.

Stuck Point: If the cable or tools are stuck, Cerberus can estimate
the stuck depth based on a pull test, wherein the amount of stretch is
measured as the surface pull is increased. Unlike conventional
stretch charts, which are applicable only for vertical wells, Cerberus
takes into account the additional drag caused by well deviation,
yielding a much more accurate answer.
