Peer Educator of the Month: December2015/January 2016

Inside this issue:

Emily Holmes
The Learning Center is proud to recognize Emily Holmes as
Outstanding Peer Educator for December 15/January 16!
Emily first joined our team in the fall of 2014 and since then has
accumulated 128+ tutoring hours. She assists students with accounting
and information technology as a walk-in tutor, one-to-one tutor, and
lab assistant. As Kristina Rieger wrote in her letter of nomination, In
her roles as a one-to-one tutor and lab assistant specifically, Emily
received outstanding evaluations from the students she worked with.
Students overwhelmingly mentioned how friendly, approachable,
knowledgeable, and willing to help she was both in and out of class:
Emily was very knowledgeable about the course material and was
able to provide easy to understand direction when I was confused
about certain topics. She consistently goes above and beyond. The
Learning Center is thankful to have her!
To echo Kristinas words, we are very appreciative of Emilys service to
The Learning Center and her peers. Please join us in congratulating
her for this honor!

Are You Smarter Than A TutorEvent Recap

March Jelly Bean

Counting Contest
March 1st March 24th
Library Learning
Commons 205

Teams were given a variety of

multiple choice and openended questions within each
category. These questions also
grew in difficulty as teams progressed into the later rounds.

This year was another great

year of The Learning Centers
Are You Smarter Than A Tutor
Event. Co-sponsors for the event
were Future Business Leaders of
America, Phi Delta Psi, and Phi
Omega Psi.

Congratulations Team SGA!

These students were very intelligent in how to play the game as
well as having knowledge of a
lot of the topics presented during the tournament. Team SGA
also had a few supporters in the
audience, who cheered them to
victory as they took the $200
grand prize!

This event occurred February

22nd in the Pub and had a
great audience cheering on
each of the 10 teams that competed for the $200 cash prize.
Teams of tutors and students
played against each other answering trivia questions in categories such as Business, Math,
Writing, and Pop Culture.

FBLA provided great raffle

prizes such as gift cards to
Chipotle, 900 Degrees, and
Puritan Backroom. These raffles
were drawn between rounds
and everyone who attended
was entered for a chance to
win.

This year had the same set up

as last year with teams deciding
on a team member for each
question presented so that
every team could play to its
strengths.

Stop by the Learning

Center and submit
your guess this
March!

Overall, this years Are You

Smarter Than A Tutor Event was
a great success. Our co-sponsors
were such a big part of this successful event as well as everyone who attended and cheered
on the participants.

Employment Association: Student Employee of the Year
The Learning Center is proud to put
forth Evan Bodi as our nominee for the NSEA award.
As a Peer Educator in The
Learning Center, Even covers a
broad spectrum of tutoring
services. In our walk-in sessions, you will find Evan tutoring in business, math, and
writing! Evan is also a classroom assistant in many busiEvan
ness and English classes, and
has positive relationships with
the international students in his Conversational English sessions.
Working in The Learning Center can be
challenging at times especially during
mid-terms and finals, but Evan is always friendly, positive, and upbeat
when helping his fellow students.
Evan's positive attitude helps students
feel at ease which lends to more

productive tutoring sessions. He is

Valentines Day Candy

Heart Counting Contest
Winner:
Brian Nguyen

This year The Learning Center hosted a candy counting

contest just before Valentines Day. This consisted of
a jar of candy hearts and
students made guesses on
how many were in the jar.
The student with the closest
guess without going over
the total number in the jar
won!
Our winner for this event was
Brian Nguyen. He had a really
close guess of 539 heart candies. The total in the jar was
547!
Congratulations Brian! We
encourage you and everyone
else to participate in our upcoming Jelly Bean counting
