Different companies create different kinds of waste. A hospital is different from a restaurant and they are
both very different from a construction site. Then there is the all too common office. Environmental Plus
estimates that the average office employee uses nearly 10,000 sheet of paper each year.
All of these businesses however can participate in waste management programs. The most common form
of this is of course, recycling, where various materials from paper to plastic to glass are collected and
turned into new and useful products. Most of us are already familiar with the benefits. Recycling not only
saves natural resources but it reduces pollution and the energy that would normally be used to create or
destroy these materials. The business benefits include improving your company's reputation and being
good corporate citizens.
9

Beginning a program does not have to be a difficult process either. First, know your business and what
materials could be recycled. Then, try to encourage the support of management. This way, the company
can become involved in educating the employees on the project. It is equally important to clearly explain
what is being done. This can be done by using memos and e-mails, or better yet having short meetings to
explain what materials are being recycled and where an employee can put them. If colored bins or
collection boxes are being used, label them clearly.

process?
(a) By teaching staff

(c) By collecting old paper

Sushi Sales High
By Herbert Bush
Staff Reporter
Despite increasing warnings of dangerous levels of mercury found in tuna, sushi sales have not been
affected in area restaurants.
A report released Monday by the Department of Health showed toxic levels of mercury were found in
sushi from the city's top restaurants, at both high-end and fast food locations.
I read the report, said Hannah West, a customer who was picking up sushi from Kyoto Kitchen. I don't
eat tuna or sushi that often, so I don't think it's that big of a deal. Anyway, you can get sick from eating
chicken, pork, or almost anything if its not cooked properly.
After I read the report, I decided to post it and a sign to warn customers, said Toru Yamamoto, owner of
Blue Fin. I'd rather ensure my customer's safety than sell higher-priced tuna, but it seems like they aren't
worried about it because my sales are still the same.
12

The city health department has yet to take action with these findings, and has yet to do so in the past.
Spokesperson Cathy Simpson said the department encourages restaurant owners to warn customers or
remove tuna from the menu until a decision is made to take action.
With the way the public is consuming tuna, I don't think it'll be a problem, said Hiram Longfellow, who
eats sushi once a week for lunch. I think I'm going to stay away from tuna for a while, but I don't know
how long I'll be able to resist it.
176. What is the problem?
(a) Local fishers are losing money.
(b) The price of sushi has increased.
(c) Tests show some sushi to be dangerous.
(d) High city taxes are forcing businesses to
close
177. What is true according to the article?
(a) The report was conducted by the city.
(b) Most customers have stopped purchasing
tuna.
(c) Fishers are planning to protest at city hall.
(d) Mostly immigrant business owners are
affected.
178. Who is Toru Yamamoto?
(a) A customer

(b) A sushi chef

(c) A business owner
(d) A city spokesperson.
179. What does the city government encourage?
(a) For residents to support farmers
(b) For restaurant owners to warn customers

To: Sally Romney (romney938@manual.com)
Subject: Fondue Recipe
Date: May 30, 5:29 p.m.
Sally,
Here is the recipe I used for the fondue we had for lunch. I sometimes add more garlic and a pinch of
red pepper: either paprika or cayenne. You can also add yogurt instead of milk to make the recipe a
little creamier.
You also mentioned that you were worried that you didn't have a fondue pot. Well, if you have a
thick clay pot works well too. The goal is to make sure the cheese doesn't harden before you eat it. If
you don't have either of the pots, you can just reheat the cheese on the stove using low heat. This is
what I used to do before I bought my fondue pot. I hope to hear how the recipe turns out.
Take care,
Sheila.

181. What is a listed ingredient?

(a) Butter
(b) Vinegar
(c) Olive oil
(d) Cheddar cheese

182. What is true according to the recipe?

(b) The fondue should be cooked at a high heat.
(c) The garlic should be added before the cheese.

(b) Ms. Burns had lunch with Ms. Romney.

(a) Cream
(b) Chicken broth
(c) Chopped onion

Help a child enjoy a summer they will never forget

Fisher's Restaurant is collecting donations for its annual Children's Summer by the Sea Camp. Founded
in 1984, the Fisher's chain of family restaurants will continue its tradition of helping poor and
disadvantaged children with its non-profit camps. Brighton restaurant manager Kevin Lindon remembers
the early beginnings of the camp.
It was a great idea from the beginning. We wanted to do something special for the kids who didn't have
much in life, but we weren't sure how to do it. Eventually, we thought of accepting donations from
customers one month before the camps would open. The idea grew from there. Now, as most Fisher's
customers know, camp donations are accepted all through the year.
And the proceeds? The money raised is used to rent six different campsites, pay for food and supplies,
and also pay a small fee for travel expenses to the 350 volunteers that come to help every year. We invite
you to help. This coming Saturday, we will be donating our earnings from all 282 Fisher's restaurants to
the Children's Summer by the Sea Camp. So drop by, have a meal, and know you are helping to
contribute to a worthy cause.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Where can I make a donation to the camp?
A: We will accept all donations, big or small, at any of our restaurants nation-wide. You can also visit
www.fisher.com/summer.
Q: How can my child attend the camp?
A: The children who attend the camp are chosen by professional social workers and employees of youth
centers. If your child is currently attending one of these centers, they may be chosen for the camp.
Q: Will Fisher's make a donation to other children's charities?
A: Although we support similar charities in their work, the money we raise is just enough to meet our
expenses. Unfortunately, we don't have the funds to contribute.
Q: How can I help? Are there any volunteer opportunities this summer?
A: There is always room for volunteers. Come by one of our restaurants with a resume and ask to speak to
the manager. You will either be interviewed directly or be asked to come back for a later interview. If you
are energetic, love children, and have related experience, your chances are very good. You must also be
18 years of age or older. First aid training will be required for some.

Anna,
I remember you mentioned you renovated your kitchen yourself. It looks wonderful, like you had it
professionally done.
I just bought new appliances, and would like to redo my kitchen to match it. However, I have no idea
where to begin. Did you have someone help you with the design, or did you just look through magazines?
Also, where did you get the supplies to do it?
Any advice you can give me will help Steve and me out. We are thinking of waiting to start next month,
when the weather cools down.
Thanks for your help.
Regards,
Madeline

Madeline,
It sounds like you're ready to really change your entire kitchen. Remember, it'll still be quite a bit of
money, especially considering you just bought a new refrigerator and stove.
I already had an idea of what I wanted, but I did look through magazines to get an idea. I suggest getting a
few different ones to see what you like and what fits with the rest of your house.

We mainly purchased our supplies at the Home, Etc., which has a large selection of everything you'll need
from cabinets and tiles, to paint and knobs.
If you want, I can go with you to the store to look at some stuff. Let me know.
Good luck!

Subject: Establishing Blogs
Good morning Ms. Chezel,
After the June seminar on Alternative Advertising, I am more confident in the benefits of company blog
sites. I was especially surprised at the following statistic: 10% of the top 500 revenue-earning companies
have external blogs. The main Internet site that currently provides our customers with product
information is essential, but it is no longer the only Internet tool out there.
Customers expect a higher level of service than ever before. An external blog however can present
information in a different, more informal way. Joker, for example, the British shoe maker, announces new
products through its corporate blog and lets customers post their own product reviews. Some companies
feel that this may be a way of creating negative publicity for themselves, though Joker argues that it is a
more transparent and honest way to do business.
External blogs can also be efficient ways to update company concerns and product news without having
to make changes to the main site. Of course, our main page will always include the most important
updates, but a blog will allow us to post greater amounts of information to a wider group of readers.
Bizwell Research Group reported in a fall release that 60 to 70% of large companies now make use of
company controlled blogging. I'm hopeful that there are profitable reasons for doing this.
I welcome your thoughts on this topic.
