NOISE AT WORK

Noiseat work
Excessive and continuous exposure to noise can cause
long-term damage to hearing, but the effects are preventable
New regulations, introduced in 2006, have
seen a reduction in the daily exposure to
noise levels:

Appropriate PPE and hearing tests are

provided if there is evidence of a risk to
workers hearing

Lower Exposure Action Value reduced to 80db (or

135db peak sound pressure)

The risks posed by noise are eliminated or

reduced wherever it is reasonably practicable
to do so

Upper Exposure Action Value reduced to 85db (or

137db peak sound pressure)

Speedy Hire is actively striving to

assist in the area of noise at work.

Exposure Limit Value reduced to 87db (or 140db peak

sound pressure)

The legislation requires that:

Noise assessments are to be undertaken by a competent
person if the noise level exceeds the first action level
- Details on how to undertake an assessment can be found at
www.hse.gov.uk/noise/noise.htm
Noise reduction measures are implemented where
reasonably practicable
Workers are provided with appropriate training
and information

Speedy pioneered the reference to manufacturers

decibel figures in our catalogue. Please note: decibel
figures are for guidance only and will vary depending on
environmental conditions
Our purchasing policy is to buy super-silenced
equipment wherever practical
We provide suitable PPE equipment, as required,
including ear plugs and heavy duty ear protectors
Speedy have developed a flyer to help you to raise
the awareness of noise at work. Copies are available,
at no cost by calling

WELCOME

HEALTH & SAFETY

As the hirer, please read the following key safety points before
operating any equipment:
Risk Assessment
There is a duty on employers under current Health & Safety
legislation to adopt best practice measures to reduce risk and
ensure the Health & Safety of themselves, co-workers and
the public.
Testing

Sparks & Fire

Explosions and fire can be caused by sparks from exhaust or
electrical systems. Do not use machines in a closed area
where there is flammable material, vapour or dust.
Hot Surfaces
Whilst the pump is in normal operation do not touch any of
the engine components including the exhaust, pump ends,
valves and tanks. Surfaces get extremely hot and can burn.

In line with the Health & Safety Executive requirements,

submersible pumps will have to be checked for earth
conductivity and resistance on a 90-day cycle. This may result
in Speedy requiring access to the equipment whilst on hire.
Special Safety Devices
Do not disable or adjust any safety or protective device fitted to
the pump or increase any governed speed or working
pressures in the pump.
Exhaust Gases
Do not operate equipment in confined spaces without good
ventilation. Breathing exhaust gases is dangerous and could
potentially kill.

UKs largest fleet of environmentally friendly pumps

WELCOME
Electrical Control Equipment

To check for hydraulic fluid leaks hold a piece of cardboard

close to suspected leaks and then inspect for fluid. Do not use
bare hands fine jets of hydraulic fluid at high pressure can
penetrate the skin. Always wear eye protection. If fluid comes
into contact with eyes or flesh seek medical help immediately.

Earth leakage protective devices and motor overloads should

only be adjusted by a competent person.

Oil
Do not handle used engine oil more than necessary as it
contains harmful contaminants which can cause skin cancer.
Always use barrier cream or wear gloves to prevent skin
contact. Avoid contact with the mouth.
Damaged Hoses & Cables
Damaged hoses and cables can cause fatal accidents. Inspect
regularly for:
Damaged end fittings / loose glands
Chafed outer covers or exposed wire armour
Ballooned outer covers
Kinked or crushed hoses
Embedded armouring in outer covers

Super-silent pumps

Safety Symbols
*Safety gloves and protective footwear should always be worn
when handling pumps and/or any ancillary equipment.

Protect your company from the

impact of plant and equipment theft
With a proven 98% recovery rate on stolen equipment, SAFESET can save you money on insurance premiums and limit
lost productivity through downtime.
SAVE s ON INSURANCE PREMIUM COSTS

REDUCE LOST TIME DUE TO EQUIPMENT FAILURE

Theft of on-site machinery is a growing problem, with over 100 million worth of
equipment stolen in the UK alone every year. The scale of the problem is driving up
insurance premiums for thousands of firms who fall victim each year and are forced to
submit claims to recover costs.

Performance monitoring

To combat this Speedy developed SAFESET, a revolutionary asset tracking and

management system, unique to the hire market. The box is wireless and small enough
to conceal in any piece of high value equipment.
Proactive action allows for immediate savings with insurance companies typically offering

FLOW ESTIMATES

51

Flow meters are available for this purpose. In addition the following simple tests can be used. The pipe should be straight, at least
1.5m (5ft) from the nearest elbow, bend or valve. The rate of flow can be estimated from the distance 'X' or 'Y'. For larger pipes
the flow is proportioned to pipe diameter squared (full pipe only).

dropping hose in the water and before starting.
Check security of all hoses.
After starting pump set, check delivery hose for leaks and ensure
any material being pumped is being discharged where intended.

Visually check drive belts Do not remove guards.

Check condition and security of hoses as leaks may cause banks

to be undermined.

Check all meters and gauges are functional. Check for leaks.
Check the engine oil pressure and temperature are within
acceptable limits.

Check the control panel readings. Indicate correctly within safe

parameters. (Refer to operator manual for tolerances)

Check that the pump is not due to be serviced. See NEXT

Super-silent pumps

TROUBLE SHOOTING
Things to do for efficient pumping:

Pump volatile or corrosive liquids

Locate pump as close as possible to liquid - keep suction lift to

a minimum

Have inexperienced personnel operate pump

Tamper with engine governor

Check for proper hoses, reinforced on the suction side and

flexible on the discharge side

Operate pump with pump housing discharge outlet closed

pump and engine overheating will occur

Have tight connection on suction side of pump with good

coupling (s)

Operate pump with suction inlet obstructed internal damage

may occur due to cavitation

Use strainer recommended by manufacturer

Use collapsible hose on suction side of pump

Operate pump with suction hose buried in sand or mud,
suspend strainer if possible

Secure pump before operation

Provide area for adequate ventilation of exhaust
Pump liquids for which the pump was designed

Operate pump without a strainer

Check suction strainer regularly keep clean

Use a smaller than recommended suction hose

Check and service pump and engine per maintenance schedule

Any increase in heat would require investigation to suction and

delivery lines

Drain pump before freezing weather

Operate electric pumps at correct voltage, amperage and phase
Be aware that if the pump is not priming (approx 2 minutes)
there may be a leak somewhere in the suction side of the
system or a vacuum pump, ie bearing broken.
