“Pedro Espada brings nothing but shame to our party,” said Samuels,
“Through his repeated backstabbing of Democrats in Albany; his campaign
workers illegally using resources from his health care center for his
campaign; his repeated violations of campaign finance rules, and the recent
legal action brought by Attorney General Cuomo in response to Espada’s
alleged looting of over $14 million from Soundview, it is clear that Espada
has no business being in public office.”
“I have tremendous respect for people who get engaged in politics and
public service for all the right reasons, and it appears that, in direct contrast
to Espada, we have two such individuals in this race right now,” explained
Samuels. “And while both have the right to run and either would be far
better than the incumbent, if both of them are in the race it creates a strong
possibility that Espada is re-elected, which would be an embarrassment and
disaster for our entire state.”
Samuels, whose New Roosevelt Initiative has pledged $250,000 to the effort
to oust the scandal-plagued Espada, proposed that the candidates meet and
decide who would be strongest in a unified ticket, then work together for the
benefit of the Bronx and the entire state.
“From what I have heard, both Ms. Pilgrim-Hunter and Mr. Rivera have done
honorable work in different kinds of public service, and our internal analysis
shows that both of them are viable in a head to head matchup against the
shameless incumbent,” continued Samuels. “For the sake of the Bronx and
all of New York State, I urge that these two candidates sit down as soon as
possible, compare their records and support, assess the relative strength of
their campaigns, decide who is the stronger candidate and work together to
get Pedro Espada out of office.”
