Employment Department Sets Target To Definitely Complete Nationality
Verification of Migrants from Burma By 2012

The Employment Department has set a target to complete the nationality verification
(NV) of migrant workers from Burma by 2010. However, once the NV process is
complete, migrants should ensure to change their ID card, given the colour of their
ID denotes their status.

Mr. Jirisak Sukhonchaat, Director General of the Employment Department, today

updated the situation regarding the NV of migrants from Burma . He stated that the
latest Alien Workers Management Committee statistics show that already 82, 767
alien workers from Burma have travelled to complete NV and returned with
temporary passports. Even though this may not seem a very large figure, Thai and
Burmese authorities are currently in the process of hurrying up the process to ensure it
is complete by 2012. The target set is that at each NV centre at least 600 alien workers
should complete NV each day. Given there are three centres, that entails 1, 800 aliens
completing NV per day. This should be the case by June 2010 and into the future. If
everything proceeds according to plan, there should 50, 000 alien workers completing
NV per month, and by 2012 at least 1.2 million aliens shall have travelled to complete
NV and returned with a temporary passport. When it reaches the stage that 1 million
alien workers have had to travel to Burma to complete NV, some of these workers
will come and go and so it is likely there will only remain in Thailand around 700,
000 alien workers.

Mr. Jirisak further explained that based on current experiences from recent progress, it
seems that many alien workers who have completed NV and returned to Thailand
from Burma with their temporary passports have not then gone on to change their ID
card from pink to green. The pink ID card denotes an illegal alien worker who has
received an amnesty to remain and work in Thailand and is not allowed to leave from
their province of registration. However, the green ID card denotes that the alien
worker is legally residing in Thailand and has complete freedom to move around the
country from province to province without requesting permission from the Provincial
Governor or official in charge of a district. Hence the problem that results when
migrants do not change their ID status means they become subject to exploitation,
corruption and arrest.

1.2m Burmese workers expected to register by 2012
The Nation, May 12, 2010

So far, some 82,700 Burmese workers have passed the national identification
process, and it is expected that all 1.2 million alien workers from Burma should
pass the process by the end of 2012, the Employment Department's chief said
yesterday.

The number isn't great enough for the Burmese and Thai authorities to speed up to
meet their goal, Jeerasak Sukhonthachat said. From June, some 1,800 workers are
expected to undergo the process on a daily basis at the three ThaiBurma border
checkpoints providing such services. If about 50,000 workers are processed every
month, some 1.2 million workers should have passed the process and obtained a
Burmese passport by the end of 2012, he said.
The department will also try to inform workers who have already obtained temporary
passports to swap their pink identification cards for green ones. The pink card requires
an alien worker to only be employed in a specific area, while a green card would
allow them to travel freely around the country.

Burmese Migrant Children Display their Art

An annual exhibition of art and handicraft by the children of Burmese migrants in

Thailand has found a regular place on the cultural calendar of Chiang Mai.

The fifth annual exhibition, organized by Studio Xang, opened at the Lanna Cultural
Museum in the northern Thai city on May 8 and runs until the end of the month.

“We wanted to show the abilities of these young people and also make the Thais
aware of them,” said one of the organizers.

“I asked my father to bring me,” said one young Thai visitor, attracted by the
possibility to compare his own work with the art of migrant children.

Nearly 300 works are on display, some of them created by children living in refugee
camps along the Thai-Burmese border.

Studio Xang organizes courses for migrant children, while volunteer teachers from
nongovernmental organizations also hold classes in refugee camps.

Five refugee families to resettle in Australia

Teknaf, Bangladesh: Five refugee families--- two from Nayapara camp and three
from Kutupalong camp--- will fly to Australia to resettle on May 9, said a refugee
leader from Nayapara camp on condition of anonymity.

The families, who left were--- three families comprising 12 people from Kutupalong
camp and two families comprising 14 people from Nayapara camp.

The refugees left for Dhaka from their camps before departure to Australia for
training to acquaint them about the culture of Australia.

However, two families of 14 people from Nayapara camp and four families of 20
persons from Kutupalong, a total 34 persons, had already left for Dhaka from their
camps to resettle in Australia, but five families of 26 people have flew to Australia
leaving one family of 8 persons from Kutupalong camp in Dhaka, the refugee leader
continued.

This is the second batch of 26 refugees including men, women and children who flew
to Australia.

Besides, on May 8, another batch, one family of 8 persons from Nayapara camp and 4
families of 25 persons from Kutupalong camp were also went to Dhaka for
resettlement program in Australia. They are also being trained up in Dhaka for the
culture of Australia. They will be flight soon to Australia including the stranded
family that reached to Dhaka before this batch. This will be the third batch that will
fly to Australia, said one of the refugee committer members of Kutupalong.

The first batch of 36 refugees flew Australia on April 19.

The resettlement program began in 2006 and Canada was the first country to accept
Rohingya refugees from Bangladesh.
