Bata India - 79th Annual General Meeting


Kolkata, May 31, 2011: Bata India, the largest retailer and leading manufacturer of footwear in India
held its 79th Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the Kala Mandir in Kolkata today. For the first time, Mr.
Uday Khanna chaired the AGM as a Chairman, Bata India Limited and thanked the shareholders for their
trust and applauded the employees on their untiring efforts to take the organization to newer heights. Mr.
Khanna was accompanied by the other directors including Mr. Rajeev Gopalakrishnan, Mr. Ranjit Mathur,
Mr. Atul Singh, Mr. Akshay Chudasama, Mr. Jorge Carbajal, Mr. Jack G.N Clemons.
Mr. Khanna, Chairman Bata India in his speech said The Company has continued to achieve
exceptional performances during the past few years and the year 2011 had been the best in the history of
Bata India Limited. The company has achieved Rs. 1,542 crores turnover mark during the year 2011 and a
Net Profit of over Rs.226 crores (including net gains from surplus property). The company declared final
dividend of Rs.6/- per share which is again the best ever dividend declared till date. We have continued
our strategy to be strong on the extensive expansion plan with 146 new stores opened in 2011 which has
resulted in excellent results of the company.
Further adding, Mr. Khanna said, The growth momentum has continued from 1st quarter and we have
delivered the best results this year for Bata India. The management has even continued to stay
committed in its focus on re-engineering the Company's operations to provide better service to its
customers and make available better quality products at most competitive prices.
The Company continued to improve the strategic positioning of the brand and enhance its retail presence
to cater to the masses. In order to improve its competitive advantage, the Company continued its retail
expansion strategy and opened 146 new stores in 2011 and is spread across metros, tier 1 and tier II
cities, renewed 30 existing stores. The new stores are all of large format and international layout, with an
average size of over 3,000 sq. ft. The specially designed shoe display systems, unique furniture,
contemporary styling and great ambience ensure that the new Bata Stores provide the best retail
environment to its customers, so as to make their footwear shopping experience at Bata memorable.
Hush Puppies, the premium retail offering also continued on an aggressive growth path with the opening
of 11 new exclusive Hush Puppies stores. The shop-in-shop retail format has also been very successful
with 6 shop-in-shops opened in 2011. It has also entered in partnership with Central stores apart from the
existing Lifestyle stores. This rapid expansion brings the brand closer to customers giving them greater
accessibility to premium range of footwear under Hush Puppies brand.
Keeping in mind the ever changing preference and comfort of the customers, Bata India has introduced
many new concepts in marketing and product display. In order to achieve volume growth and to expand
the brand's presence in the unrepresented areas, also introduced new concept of business, e.g.,
engaging 'Priority Dealers', etc. Bata India recently launched the Footin Stores in November 2011, with all
together a new range of footwear focusing on affordable fashion and trendy styles. The Company has also

entered into tie-up arrangements with e-commerce sites, viz., ebay.com, rediff.com, etc. and is also using
the social media networks like facebook and twitter to increase its customer base.
With customer service being the prime focus, the several initiatives introduced for its customers has
helped in increasing the number of the customer base. 'Bata Home', home delivery service for shoes to
provide comfort, convenience and choice to the customers, an e-commerce enabled website with a
dedicated helpline for customer queries and suggestions has made footwear shopping far more
convenient for all the customers. The Bata India website www.bata.in provides consumers the option of
browsing the extensive range of footwear by Bata and buy online.
With continued focus on improvements in shoe designs through constant research, customer feedback
and trend analysis, the new footwear collection during the year has vastly improved with more trendy and
fashionable designs which has been well received by the young customers. These new designs have
resulted in earning new customers as well as renewing the support among its loyal customer base. Bata's
leadership in the dress comfort segment has continued and the Comfit, Ambassador and Mocassino
brands have grown very well. In the ladies segment, Bata's popularity continued to increase with the
trendy Marie Claire range. The latest designs have been appreciated for accentuating a woman's
femininity, sensuality and individuality. The youth focused brand North Star and specialty outdoor brand
Weinbrenner also presented new trendy footwear with an increased focus on casual comfortable styles.
Hush Puppies, the premium brand offered city casual styles to customers while Scholl & Comfit offered
fresh younger designs for absolute comfort with style. Popular among the tiny tots, Bubblegummers
continued to allure parents with its trendy and lightweight all-weather footwear. The new Baby Bubbles
range has also been well appreciated by customers.
Encouraging entrepreneurship, Bata India has introduced K-Scheme, an initiative to encourage the
emerging entrepreneurs keeping in mind their growing aspirations and welfare of the society. This
scheme is to nourish and cultivate the latent talent allowing them to work in a greater capacity to enhance
their retail experience. This provides support to every individual who wishes to widen their horizons and
shoulder greater responsibilities. Bata India provides support in terms of location, retail space, stocks and
promotional materials, allowing them to carry out the retail stores. The scheme works on commission
basis with remarkable sale growth and earnings.
The Company has also developed the 'New Mega Housing Complex' that has been strategically designed
keeping in mind the convenience of the employees offering attractive shifting facility at Batanagar.
Located near the Batanagar factory, this initiative by Bata India has redefined the way of living as it is
designed with an assortment of amenities and also helps reduce the hassle of tiring commutation for its
employees.
Under the Bata Children Programme, an Immunisation Campaign was organised in Bataganj, Patna that
was characterised into three phases; volunteering, awareness procession and informative workshop. The
campaign was in support of the children living in slums and villages near the Bata India factory. The
volunteers of Bata Children Programme had also set-up a base camp at the factory and were successful in
giving polio drops to 15000 children in the slums and villages.

Bata India has also improved its wholesale business through its four distribution channels even in
unrepresented towns resulting in additional business. The Company is also focusing on the top
distributors and working with them to grow its business. Constant incentive programmes were offered to
existing dealers to ensure growth in the wholesale business.
Introducing Total Quality Management, i.e., quality in merchandise, manufacturing, marketing, stores
operations, new stores opening, grooming and building the best talented team, has been the most
important driver of the Company's operations with increased emphasis on improving its productivity. The
company even introduced a dedicated customer service centre at Gurgaon and a toll free number to
respond to the customers' queries within 24 hours.
Bata Industrials is also on the growth path with a 30% year on year growth. The division is well accepted
in the industrial segment and has increased its penetration through a growing distribution base. The
company has also undertaken new projects to ensure strong leadership position and continue
progression in footwear industry.
