Private sector
The private sector is made up of many travel and tourism
organisations of different sizes, from very large
international companies to small independent businesses.
Private sector organisations are to make a profit by
selling a range of products and services to tourist, from
theme park tickets, to hotel rooms, to food, drink and
souvenirs. Private sector organisations include
accommodation providers, transport companies and
some visitor attractions. Well- known as Thomas cook,
holiday inn and Atlantic airways.

Public sector
Voluntary sector
The voluntary sector, known as charitable sector,
includes organizations that are not part of government
and do not exist to make a profit. The aim is to provide a
particular service, or to promote a particular cause or
viewpoint. Voluntary sector organizations are founded
through memberships, donations and through gift shops
and cafes. Example: national trust, the youth hostel
association and tourism concern.
Domestic organisations
Domestic organisations are those which meet the needs
of tourists travelling around the UK, such as tour
operators, accommodation and transport provides visitor
attractions and other support and ancillary
organisations.
Transport providers
Transport providers allow tourist to move around the
country either by road, rail or air. Domestic transport
providers include bus and coach companies, railways and
airlines.
Road
Road passenger transport providers include bus and
coach companies, locally and on a national level across
the UK. There are two types of coach provider: scheduled
and charter. Scheduled providers run to a published
timetable regardless of the number of passengers such as
national express and mega bus. Charter range from small
independent providers to national companies such as
shearings holidays and national holidays.
Rail
There are 29 train operating companies providing
passenger train in the UK. The role of the train operating
companies is to provide a safe general public. Train
operating companies are generally privately owned and
aim to make a profit through the sale of tickets.
Air
Domestic air travel in the UK has also been increasing in
recent years. The number of daily flights available and
the regional airports have made it much easier for
travelers to choose air travel to move around the UK.

There are a variety of different accommodation options
for tourists in the UK depending on their needs and
budgets. Example:
Hotels
Guest accommodation
Guest accommodation includes guest house, such as
farmhouse and inns.
Hostels
Hostels generally provide a basic level accommodation
and shared living and social spaces such as kitchen, and
bathrooms.
Serviced apartments
Serviced apartments provide private kitchen and
bathrooms facilities but have a range of other hotel like
service such as housekeeping. Many serviced apartments
are found in large city centers.
Self-catering
Self-catering properties are those with their own kitchen
and bathroom facilities, such as cottages and apartments.
Campus accommodation
Many universities and colleges allow tourists to book their
student accommodation outside of term time. Often with
basic facilities, this can be a great option for groups
looking for a good value place to stay.
Visitor attractions
These rages from theme parks to castle and stately
homes. Some are classed as heritage attractions. Visitor
attractions can have one different role. Example:

Natural attractions
Natural attractions have not been built by man and are a
natural feature of the environment. They include:
mountains, caves, forest, beaches, rivers and lakes.
Built attractions
Built attractions are man-made some are purpose built to
attract tourists, while others were originally built for a
different purpose, but now also attracts visitor example:
farms, gardens, country parks and zoos.

product and service for outbound tourist.
Tour operators
Outbound operators arrange holidays and provide a range
of discount package deals which can combine
accommodation, ground transport, such as a transfer
from the airport to the hotel. Such as excursions, meals
and car hire may also be part of the package. The two
largest tour operators in the UK are Thomson Holidays
and the Thomas Cook. Thomson brand also includes
specialist holidays and brans including crystal holidays,
Travel agents
Travel agents give advice and sell and administer the
bookings for a number of different tour operators. Some
of these agencies have multiple branches, while others
are independent shops. Large branches provide a wider
range of services, such as foreign currency exchange.

Transport providers
The UK has a variety of ferry, rail and airline organisations
providing transport services to other countries.
Ferries
There are various different types of ferry, operating at
different speeds. Fast ferries operate at much higher
speeds than traditional multi-purpose ferries, providing
shorter journey times. Many large ferries are similar to
small cruise ships, which can include a range of cabin

their vehicle directly into air conditioned carriages and
stay with their vehicles throughout the journey.

Charter airlines
A charter flight has been contracted specifically to
transport tourist to specific holiday destinations. A carter
flight often eaves very early in the morning or late at
night, as the fees charge by the airport are often much
cheaper at this quieter time. Example: Thomas cook and
monarch airlines.

Inbound organisations
Inbound travel and tourism organisations provide
products and services for overseas visitor to the UK. They
include tour operators, coach operators and guiding
services, as well as support organisations, such as visit
Britain, which promote the UK overseas to inbound
tourists.
Coach operators
Coach operators can provide a range of transport options
for inbound tourists ranging from a simple airport to
accommodation transfers, these operators may also be
embers of a supporting organisations such as the guild of
British coach operators.

Visit Britain has a network of overseas offices which help
to publicise the features and attractions of the UK to
overseas travelers. They also provide and advice and
information services for those planning their visit to the
UK and organize a series of events to help promote the
UK abroad.
Meet England
Meet England is the official body responsible for
promoting England as a meeting and events destinations
for business tourists. They provide advice and information
on destinations, venues and travel arrangement for those
organising conferences, exhibitions and events in the
country.
