Method of Justification

1) The question have stated that the new residential estate is built in the suburb of Bundoora.
2) The question provided the topographic class of the new estate may be considered flat.
3) Using a circle drawn at the centre of the proposed house with one hectare to determine the
number of obstructions per hectare.
1Ha = 0.01km2
r2 = 0.01km2
r
= 0.056km
= 56m
A circle with 56m radius which contributed to 1Ha is drawn on Figure 2 with the
reference of scale shown on the bottom right of the figure. The scale that used in this
drawing is 1cm:100m. There are no obstructions near the proposed house. The nearest
obstruction such as trees are located at 28Ha, the trees are congested after 28Ha.
Therefore, it can be said that it had very few obstructions per hectare although there are
many trees and houses shown in Figure 2.
Justification:
1) Region. ( Region A)
Region A is chosen because Melbourne is located in Region A referring to Figure 2.1 in
AS4055-2012.
2) Choosing Terrain Category. (TC 2)
Terrain Category 2 is chosen because there are no more than two obstructions per hectare and
the proposed house is not located near water surface or very open terrain.
3) Choosing Topographic Class. (T0)
T0 is chosen because the question stated the topographic class in considered flat.
4) Choosing Shielding Class. (NS)
No shielding is applied as the obstructions are obviously less than 2.5 obstructions per
hectare.
Decision Making For Wind Classification
1) Summarising the justification above, Melbourne is located at Region A, with TC 2 and
topographic class of T0 with applying no shielding class.
2) The wind class is determined as N2.

Wind class = N2.

Referring to Table 2.1A, the design gust wind speed (V h) at height (h) for ultimate limit state
of strength (Vh,u) is 40m/s and for serviceability limit state (Vu,s) is 26mls.
Determination of design wind pressure:
From Clause 3.3,
p = quCp
1) Finding qu,u for ultimate limit state of strength (Vh,u)
qu,u = 0.5 air (Vh,u)2 /1000 , air = 1.2kg/m3
= 0.5 (1.2) (240)2/1000
= 0.9600kPa
2) Finding qu,s for serviceability limit state (Vh,s)
qu,,s = 0.5 (1.2) (26)2 /1000
= 0.4056kPa
For Roof General Areas (Region G) (Kc, Cp,c = -1.0 , +0.63)
a) Ultimate limit state of strength of wind pressure:
pu = qu,u Cp
= (0.9600)(-1.0)
= -0.9600kPa
pu

= qu,u Cp
= (0.9600) (+0.63)
= 0.6048kPa
b) Serviceability limit state of wind pressure:
ps = qu,s Cp
= (0.4056)(-1.0)
= -0.4056kPa
ps

= qu,s Cp
= (0.4056)(+0.63)
= 0.2556kPa

For Roof-Edge (Region RE) (Kc, Cp,c =-1.8)

a) Ultimate limit state of strength of wind pressure:
pu = (0.9600) (-1.8)
= -1.7280kPa
b) Serviceability limit state of wind pressure:
Ps = (0.4056) (-1.8)
= -0.7300kPa
For Roof-Edges (Region RC, Corner Area) (Kc, Cpu,n = -2.61)
a) Ultimate limit state of strength of wind pressure:
pu = (0.9600) (-2.61)
= -2.5056kPa
b) Serviceability limit state of wind pressure:
ps = (0.4056) (-2.61)
= -1.0586kPa

For Walls (Region G) (Kc, Cp,n = +0.9, -0.77)

a) Ultimate limit state of strength of wind pressure:
pu = (0.9600)(+0.9)
= 0.8640kPa
pu

= (0.9600) (-0.77)
= -0.7392kPa

b) Serviceability limit state of wind pressures:

ps = (0.4056) (+0.9)
=0.3650kPa
ps

= (0.4056) (-0.77)
= -0.3123kPa

For Walls (Region SC, Corner Area) (Kc, Cp,n = -1.35)

a) Ultimate limit state of strength of wind pressure:
pu = (-0.9600) (-1.35)
= -1.2960kPa
b) Serviceability limit state of wind pressure:
ps = (0.4056)(-1.35)
= -0.5476kPa
