RapeoftheLockbyAlexanderPopehasatitlethatimmediatelydrawsthereadertoa
certainofassumptionofsexualrapewherethemaleistheaggressorandthefemaleisthe
helplessvictim.Whilethereareunderlyingsexualthemesinthepoem,thewordasusedinthe
titlereferencestheforcefulseizureofsomethingprecious.Iarguethatthroughthemanipulation
ofbothtraditionalgenderrolesandfemalesexuality,Poperedefinestherulesoftraditional
societyandcrushesthedoublestandardsplacedonfemales.
IbelievethatPopeusesBelindaasaprimeexampleofafemalecharacterthatdoesnotfit
withinthetypicalsocietalconfidesplaceduponwomen.Belindaisdescribedasbeautifuland
rich,whicharecharacteristicswomengenerallywantedtobeassociatedwithbecausetheyare
viewedasthedesirablecharacteristichowever,Belindaisalsodescribedinatraditionally
masculinewaythroughoutmostofpoem.Popecompareshertoadetailedmilitaryleader(33).

Thelossofherhairseparatesherasapersonandtheobjectinwhichshewasviewedas
bymen.Additionally,asPopesuggestedattheendofthepoem,thelockofhairisgoingtobe
aroundforever.Iinterpretthatasthedurabilityofthefemalespirit.Hairisimportanttowomen.
Itisironicthatthelossofsomethingsoimportantisviewedassotrivialwhenmenwouldreact
similarlyifanobjectthatalsosymbolizespowerandstatuswasforciblytakenawayfromthem.

morethanjustherlooksormoney.
