RapeoftheLockbyAlexanderPopehasatitlethatimmediatelydrawsthereadertoa
certainofassumptionofsexualrapewherethemaleistheaggressorandthefemaleisthe
helplessvictim.Whilethereareunderlyingsexualthemesinthepoem,thewordasusedinthe
titlereferencestheforcefulseizureofsomethingprecious.Iarguethatthroughthemanipulation
ofbothtraditionalgenderrolesandfemalesexuality,Poperedefinestherulesoftraditional
societyandcrushesthedoublestandardsplacedonfemales.
IbelievethatPopeusesBelindaasaprimeexampleofafemalecharacterthatdoesnotfit
withinthetypicalsocietalconfidesplaceduponwomen.Belindaisdescribedasbeautifuland
rich,whicharecharacteristicswomengenerallywantedtobeassociatedwithbecausetheyare
viewedasthedesirablecharacteristichowever,Belindaisalsodescribedinatraditionally
masculinewaythroughoutmostofpoem.Popecompareshertoadetailedmilitaryleader(33).

thatPopesintentionherewastoempowerwomen.Belindawasjustifiedinheranger.Her
braveryinchallengingtheinjusticeagainstherisatypicalforwomeninsociety.Although
Belindaisadesirable,youngwomen,Popewritesdepthintohercharacterthatallowshertobe
morethanjustherlooksormoney.
