Students team up with can-do attitudes

Haddonfield Child Cares annual CANstruction event all about STEM, teamwork and helping others
By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
Haddonfield children recently
tested their construction skills
with cans, all for a good cause.
Haddonfield Child Care once
again held its annual CANstruction event with the We CAN Help
program, where students build
structures out of cans and then
donate those cans to a local food
pantry. Children had a great time
building the structures while
learning about Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
and service along the way.
In our programs we try to do a
variety of activities, we do everything from arts to science to service learning, and this kind of
combines all of them, Haddonfield Child Care Executive Director Denise Sellers said.
It was a lot of fun, Ava Peifer,
10, of The LeBron Jamesers said.
We CAN Help started two years
ago at Elizabeth Haddon Elementary School. It is based on the
CANstruction events that have
become popular for architecture
firms around Philadelphia and
New York, in which architects
and engineers compete in design
with only canned foods.
Due to the success of previous
events, this year is the first year
that all three elementary schools

with 141.
are participating in the program.
The purpose of the We CAN
Help program continues to be
about incorporating STEM, the
arts and service learning at Haddonfield Child Care. STEM is incorporated by the organizing,
planning and building of the can
structures; art is involved with

designing the structure; and service learning is the cherry on top,

donating the cans at the end of
each event to a local food pantry.
The Sun went to the Central Elementary School We CAN Help
event, held on May 19 to watch the
face off of the two teams, The Lebron Jamesers and Rock and Win.

Students were told about We CAN

Help a month beforehand, so they
had time to think of a design and
bring in cans. Most cans were
brought in within the few days before the event, Sellers said.
Each team had 30 minutes to
build their CANstruction. They
would be judged on structure, de-

sign and teamwork. Teams were

also allowed to trade cans with
the other team if a certain type of
can was needed.
The LeBron Jamesers originally had the idea of building a
Rubiks Cube, according to Diana
Huebl, 8, however they did not
have the sizes and colors needed.
So they had to scrap that idea and
together came up with the idea to
create a pyramid with a grand entrance, adding gold cans to the top
representative of the golden pyramids.
Rock and Win originally wanted to create an emoji, but they
thought it would be too hard, according to Michael Furia, 8, so
they came up with the idea of the
Empire State Building. Rock and
Win started with the biggest cans
at the bottom and then added the
smaller red cans to the top, with
the smallest one as the infamous
point.
Both teams found that the
hardest part was making sure the
cans didnt fall. Both teams found
their structures were slightly unstable. They learned that having
the cans all right side up kept the
cans from wobbling as much.
The cans were wobbly so we
had to switched the cans around,
Peifer said.

The Haddonfield Board of Education meeting was all about honoring the districts students last
week.
The BOE meeting commended
more than 50 students for their
success in foreign language, the
arts, district projects and more.
Students were given certificates
as well as big rounds of applause.
Were very proud of all of the
accomplishments of many of our
students and each year it is just
phenomenal in terms of what
they achieve, Superintendent
Richard Perry said.
Haddonfield Memorial High
School senior Madison Rosandich
was honored for receiving the
2016 Foreign Language Educators
of New Jersey Scholarship for
German. In German, Madison

wrote a timed response essay, had

a 30-minute phone interview and
an oral proficiency interview in
her second language to ultimately
earn her the scholarship. She is
the only recipient for German in
New Jersey this year, according
to Perry.
In Spanish, many students
were honored for their scores on
the National Spanish Exam. Silver Awards were earned by Carly
Griffin and Andrew Pasco; a
Bronze Award was earned by
Michael Carey; and Honorable
Mentions were given to seventh
and eighth graders Suzanne
Veasey, Sofia Hoz de Vila, Julian
George, Katia Hehn and Sebastian Guzman. According to Spanish teacher Dana Pilla, 135,000
students took the exam and it was
extremely competitive, so it was a
great accomplishment for these
students to receive these awards.

More than 20 elementary

school students were honored for
participating in the 2016 PTA Reflections program. This year the
program asked students to let
their imaginations fly, using
their innovative minds to create
something in the arts for that
theme. From Elizabeth Haddon
Elementary School, Katarin
Kuball, Raffaele Rogers and
Rafael Lytle received commendations. From Tatem Elementary
School, Pilar Caruso, Audrey DeCristofaro, Audrey Kelly, Rebeeca
Li and Connor Paoli received
commendations. From Central
Elementary School, Margaret
Dunne, Graham Brock, Lucia
Marone, Sophie Rowell, Lily Rowell, Grace Farrell, Caroline Asselin, Emma Cheatham, Mary
Bentley, Katherine Schaffer, Joey
Cittadini, Ave Ippolito, Nelson
Thayer,
Clementine
Thayer,
Maeve DiMarino and Mia Bompensa received commendations.
The three elementary school
principals, we are so proud of our
students, not just for the academic accomplishments, they are
smart, kind and creative, Tatem
principal Karen Schultz said.
What I love about this program is that the ways students interpret this theme at every different grade level is very different
Each year we are so proud of the
number of participants we get in
each school, Central Principal
Shannon Simkus said.

letter
to the editor
Vote for Alex Law
in Congress primary
I just voted by mail for Alex
Law to be the Democratic nominee for Congress because he will
be stronger on the environment
and nuclear non-proliferation.
As a graduate of the United
States Naval Academy and retired U.S. Navy captain who is
concerned with the safety of our
country, I am especially dismayed
with the lack of political courage
of Donald Norcross to support
the Iran Nuclear Treaty an
agreement overwhelmingly supported by apolitical experts who
monitor compliance. In addition,
his positions are not aligned with
The Council for a Livable World, a
non-profit, non-partisan advocacy
organization dedicated to reducing the danger of nuclear
weapons and increasing national
security.
I know Norcross is a powerful
name in New Jersey, but we need
more from our leaders.

Memorial Day

108 Kings Highway East

Haddonfield, NJ 08033
856-427-0933

Three-day weekend or a return to a traditional day of remembrance?

e re all familiar with Memorial Day. We know that it
is a day set aside to honor
the brave men and women who made
the ultimate sacrifice to protect our
country and the freedom we have.
And we know that it is celebrated on
the last Monday in May, thereby creating a three-day weekend for most.
Maybe it shouldnt be that way.
Back when Memorial Day was first
established during the Civil War era, it
was observed on May 30. It had its own
special day, which, many will argue,
kept the focus on the meaning of the
day.
They have a point.
When one thinks of Memorial Day
these days, its easy to lose focus.
There are Memorial Day sales at

Holiday weekend distractions

Memorial Day shouldnt be about sales
or heading to the beach. It should be
about honoring those who died serving
this country. How do you reflect on
Memorial Day?

stores and the kick-off to summer

sentiment. That people have three
days off often overshadows what the
spirit of Memorial Day is all about.
We dont want to sound completely
negative. Many communities still take
pride in holding a thoughtful, meaningful Memorial Day ceremony
and/or parade. We still see flags displayed. We still see a lot of people take
time to honor those who died serving
our country.
But we also cant help but think that

lumping Memorial Day into a threeday weekend has diminished the

meaning of the day at least somewhat. There are too many distractions.
How many of us have made Memorial
Day weekend plans that have absolutely nothing to do with honoring the
meaning of the day?
Memorial Day should be special. It
should be a time when every American reflects on the sacrifices made on
his or her behalf and takes the time to
pay proper respect. Nothing should
distract from those sentiments.
Will the three-day weekend be replaced with a move back to May 30?
Doubtful. Its going to be up to each individual to cut through the clutter and
honor those who made the ultimate
sacrifice.

The Sun is proud to announce SPJ award winners

By TIM RONALDSON
Executive Editor
In my 11 years with Elauwit Media,
never have I been prouder of the work
weve done than last week, when we received word that we had won six awards in
the New Jersey chapter of the Society of
Professional Journalists annual awards.
The tireless work we put in to bettering
ourselves as professionals and providing
you with the most local news you can find
at the highest quality is all worth it when
we receive praise like we did last week.
Our team consisting of Kristen Dowd,
our managing editor, along with our associate editors Erica Chayes Wida, Brigit
Bauma, Zane Clark and Mike Monostra are
all to be commended whether they were
named as award winners or not for it is
the teamwork they display that allows us to
cover your town as we do.

Erica won first place in the SPJs Wilson Barto Rookie of the Year category.
This marks the second year in a row that
one of our employees has received this
honor, after Zane won the title last year.
Sean Lajoie, who has moved on to a new position with a different company, won second place behind Erica for Rookie of the
Year.
Mike captured our other first-place title,
in the Sports Reporting category for a
story on the Moorestown High School girls
lacrosse team.
Mike also took home a second-place finish in the Photojournalism Sports category for a set of photos he took of the
Shawnee High School girls soccer team
winning South Jersey Group IV, and a
third-place finish in the Feature Reporting
category for a story on Mt. Laurels Eric
Ebo Eberling, who passed away in 2013
at the age of 17 from cancer.

Our final award this year went to Erica

again. She won second place in the Photojournalism Feature category for shots she
took at the Princeton Rec Departments annual Cardboard Canoe Race.
To view the full stories and photos that
won the awards, please visit our website,
www.elauwitmedia.com/news.
Every day, I am proud of the work our
employees do to help further our mission
of providing the best local news to the residents of every town we cover.
But I would be remiss if I didnt give a
heartfelt thank you to everyone in the
community who helps us reach that goal
by being our partners by answering the
phone when we have questions, by reaching out to us when you have a news tip.
Without that cooperation and interest in
your town newspaper, The Sun wouldnt
be what it is today! Congratulations again
to all our award winners!

Take a hike with your family

Memorial Day observance at

Camden County Veterans Cemetery
By Freeholder Deputy Director Edward McDonnell

Haddonfield resident Alex

Nuckols, 10, has written an article
on hikes or in this case scrambles that he recommends for families and are two hours or less
away.

By ALEX NUCKOLS
Special to The Sun
Have you ever taken your kids
on a hike and heard, Is it over
yet? or Im bored? Here are
five close hikes, or scrambles, that
kids wont get bored with and will
enjoy.
What are hikes compared to
scrambles? Hikes are light walking uphill or downhill through
the woods on foot, while scrambles include climbing up and
down walks using hands and feet.

Special to The Sun

Alex, Shani and Jack Nuckols took a scramble up to Glen Onoko

Falls. The Nuckols family went on many scrambles within a two-hour
radius of Haddonfield, and Alex ranked them in difficulty.

Hike 1: Hawk Falls

The easiest of the five, Hawk
Falls is located at Hickory Run
State Park in Kidder Township,
Pa. The scramble is about one
mile, 15 to 30 minutes long, and
considered easy to intermediate.
Its a great scramble for kids
whove never scrambled before.
The woods are beautiful. Theres
one climb around the waterfall on

rocks, but its not too hard. Still,

stay close to your kids and far
from the edge. Be sure not to miss
the swimming hole, if your kids
like water.

Hike 2: The Pinnacle

and the Pulpit

located at the Blue Rocks Family

Campground in Lenhartsville,
Pa. You can park there for $3 and
the campground will give you an
easy-to-follow map. The hike is
about six miles long, will take
about four to five hours and is intermediate to hard.

Memorial
Day
Weekend, join us
in remembering
that this holiday
has been designated by this grateful nation to honor
our
heroes.
Throughout the history of our great
country our Veterans have fought
and died for us all.
Each year, in addition to marking
the graves of Camden Countys Veterans with a sea of American Flags,
the Freeholder Boards Office of
Veterans Affairs hosts a Memorial
Day observance.
This years event will be held at
the Camden County Veterans
Cemetery at Harleigh on May 28, at
10:00 a.m. rain or shine. Parking is
available at the Jerrothia Riggs Education Center located at 1656
Kaighn Avenue in Camden City.
The Freeholder Board created the
Camden County Veterans Cemetery
in 2007 in response to a request from
local veterans who asked for a dedicated burial place close to home.
The Board made it a priority to develop a final resting place for our
heroes who have valiantly served
this country through a selfless commitment to our nation.
We chose Harleigh as the location
for this hallowed ground for its
beauty and its historic significance.
The eight-acre park-like setting is
situated on a bluff overlooking the
scenic Cooper River, on the border
of Camden and Collingswood. We
have invested our resources into
making this plot of land significant
for eternity.
Established in 1885, Harleigh
Cemetery is currently the final rest-

ing place of hundreds

of veterans, including
more than 300 who
served in the Civil War.
It is also the final resting place of poet Walt
Whitman, four United
States Senators, and
generations of Camden County families.
Providing a beautiful
final resting place is one way to
show our appreciation. Camden
County is proud to respect our
30,000 veterans with a resting place
that reflects the honor and dignity
they deserve. The Freeholder Board
wants this space to be a place where
our military can reflect on their
service and honor the men and
women that came before them.
Veterans who honorably served
their country as an active-duty or
reserve member are eligible for a
gravesite at no charge. There are
one-time fees for interment and perpetual maintenance. Spouses of veterans interred in the cemetery are
eligible for a discount on adjacent
grave spaces. The 800-square-foot
Harleigh Cemetery Chapel is also
available to accommodate a proper
military service.
Veterans who want more information about the Camden County Veterans Cemetery can call the
Camden County Office of Veterans
Affairs at 1-800-464-VETS, Harleigh
Cemetery at (856) 963-3500, or can
ask their local funeral director.

Continued from page 7
This scramble is a great one. It
definitely takes more endurance
than Hawk Falls, but the climbs
are not much harder. Its an amazing climb going up, but I was a little disappointed going back down.
The amazing views are said to be
the best in Pennsylvania.

Hike 3: Hawk Mountain

In the middle in regard to difficulty is Hawk Mountain. It is located by searching Hawk Mountain in Albany Township, Pa., in
Google Maps. Be sure to get a trail
map and do a loop that includes
the Skyline Trail. This hike is
about three miles and two hours
long.
This trail has a boring part
that is like a normal hike, but for

Competition close
COMPETITION
Continued from page 1

Children found building the

structures and trading cans are a
lot of fun.
My favorite part was building
with my team, having fun and
doing my best, Furia said.
Judges for the competition
were Mark Simmons, previously
of Haddonfield Public Schools
and currently of Free and Friendly Tours, Lydia Brown, former
Haddonfield Child Care art
teacher, and Deborah Mervine,
chairman of the Haddon Fortnightly Evening Membership Department.
The competition was very
close, but The LeBron Jamesers
were ultimately the winner for
their pyramid. However, not all
was lost for team Rock and Win
because it collected the most cans
with 140 out of a total of 236 cans.
Great job everyone, the

judges said.
At Tatem Elementary School,
the We CAN Help event was held
the day before on May 18. The two
teams there were the John Cenas
and the CANstructors. At Tatem,
the CANstructors won with their
design of the flag of the United
States, using the colors of the
cans they had to create it, and the
rest spelling out USA. The John
Cenas were close, creating a
wrestling ring in honor of their
team name. However, the John
Cenas collected a total of 127 cans
compared to the CANstructors,
earning them the win with number of cans. The total cans they
collected were 230.
All of the cans collected from
this program are donated to the
St. Pauls Church Food Pantry, as
Sellers is part of the Haddon Fortnightly womens organization
that often donates to it. According
to Sellers, donating food items
this time of year is very imporplease see LEBRON, page 17

the most part this scramble is

fun, scary and hard. Going down
the steep climbs might seem impossible, but it is easier than it
looks. While youre there look for
hawks at the overlooks.

Hike 4: Mt. Minsi

To get to Mt. Minsi, enter Wolf
Hollow at the Water Gap in
Delaware Water Gap, Pa., into
Google Maps. At the corner of
Lake Road and Mountain Road,
head down Lake Road and you
will find the parking area for the
Appalachian Trail, which will
take you to Mount Minsi. Once
you reach the top, come back
down the way you came.
This trail is five miles, four to
five hours long and rated hard to
advanced.

On this one you should be prepared for extremely tired kids.

Theres one long hard climb
through a rhododendron forest
that is great for long family conversations. Make sure to bring a
lot of extra water and stop at Eureka Springs to cool your sore
feet.

Hike 5: Glen Onoko Falls

To find Glen Onoko Falls put
D&L Trail, Jim Thorpe, Pa.
into Google Maps. Follow signs
for the Falls Trail.
This trail is 3.5 miles and three
to four hours long and considered
the hardest of the five.
Kids who go on this hike
should not have any major struggles going up steep hills of rocks.
Watch for overlooks, help each
other and stay close. Its an amazing scramble with breathtaking
views.
Get ready for wet, dirty shoes
and tired kids saying, That was
fun. Whens our next scramble?

tant as food items are depleted
from the holidays and parents in
need who rely on food for their
children when away at school
now have to provide that meal for
them during the summer.
Pantries get a lot of food
around Christmas and Thanksgiving, but then by the spring
they are running low. Plus all of
the kids are coming home for the
summer and they are not getting
their free lunches, so parents
have to provide so many meals in
the summer, it is really a burden
for needy families. So that is why
we try to make sure to collect as
many cans as we can, Sellers
said.
