traditional worship
On this Memorial Day weekend our worship includes
the well-known hymn, Eternal Father, Strong to Save.
Youll note we have not included the hymn number
in the bulletin for a reason. We have chosen to use
the most familiar text setting of this hymn. There
are no less than fourteen different versions as well
as additional verses written by various authors! Our
hymnal does not use the most widely used setting.
The hymn was originally written in 1869 for a student
who was about to embark on a trip across the Atlantic
to America. In fact, many hymns for sailors and those
who traveled the ocean were written during the last
half of the 19th century as ocean travel was the way
to travel the world. John Dykes, the man who wrote
the tune, named it Melita after the name of the island
upon which Paul was ship-wrecked in Acts 27, a rather
ominous tune name! The version we have chosen is
the one from A Missionary Service Book of 1937 and
is perhaps the most familiar. It is closely paired with
Psalm 121.
