Kapauns Men: Will resume meeting in the fall
This weekend, the Church celebrates the great feast of Corpus Christi, which interpreted, means
the Feast of the Body of Christ, the Blessed Sacrament. This feast celebrates NOT AN EVENT,
BUT A FACT! Christ offers Himself to God, the Father. He allows us to participate by instituting
this incredible sacramentHis sacrifice of the Altar. The Holy Eucharist is not only Christs
presence, but also His promisethe promise of eternal inheritance. The two are so related that
Our Lord identified them: He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has life everlasting and I
will raise him up on the last day Our very custom of making a devout genuflection or bow
before receiving Holy Communion, shows outwardly our faith in Christs Real Presence in the
Blessed Sacrament. He is truly present in the Holy EucharistBody, Blood, Soul, and Divinity,
under each particle of the Eucharist and each drop of the Precious Blood. At the moment of the
consecration (Jesus words instituting the Eucharist), the entire reality of bread is changed into the
reality of Christs Body; the entire reality of wine is changed into Christs Blood. Only the
appearances of bread and wine remain. The reality is the glorified Christ. It isnt the mere
eating and drinking which brings us lifeJesus also said that the flesh profits nothing.
In order to benefit from receiving Holy Communion, we must give ourselves to the Lord,
meaning that we must be free of serious sin. We should desire with all our heart to be free from all
attachment to sin and want to serve Him in every way possible. When we attend Mass, we are
renewing our covenant in the Lord Jesus Christ. Our part of the covenant is to heed and do all
that the Lord has commanded us. We need to have this spirit when we come to Mass and
Communion. God is a giver and He has to have a receiver for His giving and that is why He
made us. That is why He chose Mary, in order to have someone to put Himself in flesh. He chose
the Eucharist to put Himself in us. This confused the Jews of the day, and even TODAY, many
Catholics remain perplexed as to HOW can He give us His body and blood? Every Catholic has
heard the explanation many times and it was a pure and simple act for Jesus: He took bread,
blessed and broke it, and giving it to His disciples, said, Take and eat, this is My body; then he took
the chalice of wine, blessed it, and giving it to them, said, all of you drink this, for this is My blood
of the new covenant which is being shed for many, for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in
remembrance of Me. We, as Catholics, believe this because His words clearly say so: This is My
Body, not This is a symbol of My Body. He made the Apostles priests at the Last Supper by
saying to them, Do this in remembrance of Me. He commanded them and their successors to
renew till the end of time what He had just performed.
All our good works put together can never equal the Sacrifice of the Mass, because they are the
works of humans, while the holy Sacrifice of the Mass is the work of God. St. John Vianney, the
Cure dArs, France, said: Martyrdom is nothing in comparison with the Sacrifice of the Mass, for
martyrdom is the sacrifice which Man makes to God of his life, while the Mass is the sacrifice which
God offers, for Man of His Body and Blood. Or, put more simply, this story: A little child was
preparing for her first Holy Communion and was asked the difference between a crucifix and the
Blessed Sacrament. The innocent child answered, the crucifix looks like Our Lord, but it is not He.
The Blessed Sacrament does not look like Our Lord, but It is He, Himself ! - Marcel Normand
