DEAN MAKES FIRST OF STAFF APPOINTMENTS

Also names interim law and finance directors

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Mayor-elect Karl Dean announced the first of his staff
appointments today and also named interim directors for two of the top roles in his
administration. The interim law and finance directors will serve until those positions are
permanently filled.

“I am fully prepared to take office tomorrow,” Dean said. “Metro Government will
continue to operate smoothly while appointments are being made in my administration.
Several of Mayor Purcell’s staff, whom I worked with when I was law director, have
agreed to stay on during the interim.

“While this is the shortest transition period between administrations in Metro history, I do
not feel rushed to make decisions about who will help me lead this city. The Transition
Team is diligently working to help me find the right people for my administration. I am
moving deliberately in making those decisions.”

Jim Hester, Senior Advisor. Hester was campaign manager for Dean’s campaign for
mayor. Hester was the senior advisor for Harold Ford Jr. to the Tennessee Coordinated
Campaign, after serving as campaign manager for Ford’s U.S. Senate campaign from July
of 2005 until August of 2006. Prior to that, Hester was the executive director of the
Tennessee Democratic Party. He also spent several years working on Music Row in
Nashville’s entertainment industry.

Toby Compton, Legislative Director. Compton was a senior advisor during the runoff
election for Dean’s mayoral campaign. Just prior to that, he was the campaign manager for
Buck Dozier for Mayor. He has been involved in politics since 1994, including campaigns
for Sen. Bill First and Sen. Lamar Alexander. Compton has also been an executive at The
Ingram Group and the Association of General Contractors.

Janel Lacy, Press Secretary. Lacy was the press secretary for Dean’s mayoral campaign.
Prior to the campaign, she was a staff reporter for the Nashville Business Journal, covering
finance, residential real estate and development. She has also served as a communications
intern for the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce.

Gene Nolan, Interim Finance Director. Nolan has served in the finance department of
Metro for 35 years. For the past 12 years, he has been the deputy director of finance. Other
past positions include assistant director of finance and budget officer.

Sue Cain, Interim Law Director. Cain will continue in her role as interim law director,
which she took over in January of this year when Dean resigned to run for mayor. She has
been the deputy law director for the past 13 years. Before working for Metro, Cain served
as the director of the Sentencing Commission for seven years and also has been a lawyer in
private practice.
