Snap ups (Grasshopper): Assembly Instructions

Snap ups
This is a fun paper craft of a brightly-colored grasshopper, that
springs up into the air. Push down on his body to make him
flat, hold him down with your finger, then quickly let go and

watch how the rubber band makes him jump! Adjust the way

you control him to make his jumps even more lively. When you
finish construction, put it inside a book or card to give
someone a surprise when they open it up!

*The rubber band can make the toy fly in an unexpected

direction. Parents, please make sure that children play with it

safely to avoid injuries.

This craft requires the use

Please keep them out of reach
of children while you work.

Trace along the folds with a used pen (no-ink) to get a sharp, easier fold.

Snap ups (Grasshopper): Assembly Instructions

1

Cut holes in the body for the elastic band.

This can be done easily by folding and cutting a V
shape as shown here.

Glue the two layers of the body back to back to

make a double thickness of card.
Fold it round and glue it into place.

Glue together the head, the biggest legs (left and

right) and the wings, aligning the shapes of each
half.

If you cut the ends of the elastic band on an angle

they will be easier to thread.

Let the glue dry completely before moving

on to the next stage.

Thread a thin elastic band through the four

holes in the body, pull the elastic tight and tie
the ends with a double knot. Tweezers are
useful for threading the elastic band.

Make the wings and legs by gluing the parts

back to back to make double thickness of
card.
Glue the legs, wings and head to the body in
the grey areas marked.

*These assembly instructions use the large grasshopper as a model. Follow the same steps to make the small one.
Once the glue is dry your grasshopper is ready to go!

How to play
Push down on the grasshopper's bottom
to flatten him out.

Press down on the circle with your

fingertip.
Let go quickly, and watch him jump up
with a pop!

Try changing the spot you press, or the

timing you release your finger with, and
see how you can make him jump
differently!
If the jumping does not work well, try
tying the elastic band more tightly, but
take care that it does not break.
