Life after KHS:

I left KHS in December 1955 and headed to the UK for further studies. On
graduating from University College London in 1962 I returned to Kenya and
joined the Ministry of Finance. Soon after independence I opted for citizenship
of Kenya.
In 1974 I was promoted to Director Central Bureau of Statistics at the level of
Senior Deputy Secretary. However, after seven years in post I could not see
myself advancing further within the civil service to the next logical step Permanent Secretary level. Thus, in 1981 I choose to take leave of absence
and joined the Commonwealth Secretariat. We moved to London where I
served six years as a Senior Adviser on Statistical Development. In 1987, I
opted not to return to a role at the Central Bank of Kenya and retired from
Government service. Whereupon I joined the Department of Technical
Cooperation and Development of the United Nations in New York as a Senior
Programme Coordinator.
Work in London and New York took me to many parts of the developing world
from the South Pacific, to the Caribbean, Sub- Saharan Africa and the Indian
Sub-Continent and I participated in the on going work of the UN Statistical
Commission on global harmonization of data systems. After seven years in
New York, in 1994, still under the aegis of the the UN, I moved to the
Economic Commission for Africa in Addis Ababa for 3 years as Regional
Adviser on Organization and Management of National Statistical Systems. In
1997 I then joined the UN Development Programme undertaking medium
term assignments in Lusaka, Lagos, Monrovia, Nairobi and Kampala as well

as a string of shorter term assignments in other parts of Sub-Saharan Africa.

Since 2004 I have settled and resided in Wanstead, London with my wife where we first set up home on leaving Kenya. We have a son - Aloke, a
Business Transformation Consultant in Investment Banking, and a daughter Mala, who works for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
Travel remains a key interest. In addition to frequent visits to Kenya and in
particular Kisumu, we also make regular visits to India - exploring different
regions each time. And, courtesy of our daughter's career we've had the
opportunity to visit South America as well as Europe.
In Wanstead I'm active in local community affairs and my other interests
include Indian history, researching the history of Asians in East Africa, music,
and African Art.
