Synopsis of the seminar

Geophysics application in Infrastructure projects
Infrastructure projects such as roads, housing, airports, pipelines, ports all are situated on the ground
in fill and in cuttings. Ground conditions are investigated by intrusive and expensive bore holes to
assess the ground conditions. Due to the time and expense involved investigations do not cover the
entire foot print of the project. This leads to time and cost overruns when unforeseen ground
conditions such as soft ground in fill areas and hard rock in cute areas are encountered. Geophysics
utilizes a variety of non-invasive signals varying from sonic, electromagnetic, electrical or microwave
techniques. This session will highlight a variety of techniques, applications and case histories showing
how risk and cost can be reduced.

Bio-data of speaker
Mr, Samuel Setchell (MSc (Lond.), BSc(Soton.), FGS)
Mr. Sam is a specialist in applying geophysical techniques to geotechnical and geological investigation
with international experience. He comes from a solid academic background that consists of a
Bachelors Degree from University of Southampton in Physical Geography and a Masters Degree from
the University of London in Quaternary Science.
Mr. Sam has continued his academic work through publishing papers and presenting at conferences
across the Environmental, Geological and Engineering disciplines. Of particular research interest is the
use of MASW, CSWS and SASW to create 3 dimensional models in areas where traditional drilling
would not be economically viable. Examples of this work have been undertaken at the Cominco Hinda
Phosphate Project in Congo Brazzaville and at the MMC Langat Sewer development project in Kuala
Lumpur, Malaysia.
Mr. Nathan Narendranathan (Principal Engineer)
Mr. Nathan Narendranathan has 34 years experience in the areas of geotechnical engineering,
pavement, construction materials and soil and groundwater contamination. This experience in
includes soft soil improvement, geophysical expertise, pile foundations, flexible and rigid pavements,
slope stability, construction quality control, specifications, construction specifications and supervision,
durability assessment of pavements, bridges, concrete structures etc., soil and groundwater
contamination investigations and remediation.
Mr. Nathan has published more than 15 papers in internal peer reviewed conferences on construction
materials, ground improvement reactive clay characterisation & stabilisation, ground improvement
techniques & ground investigation techniques.

Ir. Lee Eng Choy (Senior Geotechnical Engineer)

Ir. Lee Eng Choy has over 27 years experience in the areas of geotechnical engineering, structural
engineering, and construction materials. This experience includes soft soil improvement, foundations,
slope stability, construction quality control, specifications, construction specifications and supervision,
concrete structures etc., soil and groundwater investigations.
Ir. Lee has published more than 30 papers in international conferences and journals on geotechnical
topics such as ground improvement, slope stability, foundation engineering.
Ir. Lee is a registered professional engineer in Malaysia and Australia. He was a past chairman of the
Geotechnical Engineering Technical Division of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) as well as a
past Council Member of IEM.
