Chemical Engineering

Course Title:

Principles of Plant Design 1

Course Code:

CHE 414

Unit:

Course Lecturer:

Dr. D.B Ayo / Engr. Mrs Ojewumi

Semester:

Alpha

Time:
Location:

Chemical Engineering Building, Room C34

Brief Overview of The Course:

The course, CHE 414, deals with the Process design principles, Flow sheets, Chemical
engineering design, Mass and Heat transfers. Equipment (Plate columns, adsorption towers,
distillation columns, heat exchangers, evaporators, etc.). Mechanical design of equipment
Pressure vessels, columns, storage tanks, heat exchangers, etc. Piping and Instrumentation.
Costing and project evaluation.
Course Objectives/Goals:
The principal aim of the course is to introduce technological design principle to the students.
The objectives include:

Show the interrelationship among the various courses and engineering disciples in
the art of technological design.

Conceptualize the interrelationship of design processes and optimizing based on the

desire of the end user.

Conceptualize and formulate a design based on the clients specification.

Be able to develop simple design of any technological process.

Methods of Lecture Delivery/Teaching Aids:

It will be a practical oriented class, through students active participation. Examples will be
drawn from the current and relevant issues in the society. Students will have access to both the
soft copy and the hard copy [in print] of the lecture note. Illustrative materials will be used and
made available in class to facilitate learning. The teaching aids shall include Laptop and
projector.

Course Outlines:
Week 1: Introduction: Chemical engineering design
Week 2: Process design principles
Week 3: Flow sheets/ Plant layout
Week 4: Mass and Heat transfers
Week 5: Equipment: Plate columns, adsorption towers
Week 6: Equipment: distillation columns, heat exchangers, evaporators; Selection of Materials
Week 7: Mid Semester Test and Solution
Week 8: Mechanical design of equipment: storage tanks, heat exchangers
Week 9:

Mechanical design of equipment: Pressure vessels, columns

Week 10: Piping and Instrumentation

Week 11: Costing and project evaluation
Week 12: Revision
Week 13: Examination
Tutorials:
Tutorial questions will be given to students. Solution to the tutorial questions will
be provided as well.

Structure of the Programme/ Method Of Grading:

Mid-semester test is 10 marks, Assignment is 10marks and Tutorial questions is 10marks. All
these make up the Continuous Assessment of 30marks. Examination is 70 marks.
Ground Rules and Regulations:
No student will be allowed into the class ten minutes after the commencement of the lecture,
students causing distraction or disturbance will be sent out of the lecture room. Only students
that are physically present for each lecture will sign the attendance sheet.
Topics for Term papers/Assignments/Students Activities:
Practical and relevant questions will be given to students as term papers, assignments and
tutorials.

Alignment with Covenant University Vision/ Goals:

One important goal of Covenant University is to raise generational leaders through mental
productivities, my conducts and mode of teaching will be tailored in this pattern. And emphasis
will be laid on the enforcement of this goal among the students.
Contemporary Issues/Industry Relevance:
As mentioned earlier, contemporary issues like the use of Design as a mean for self employment
will be considered.
