Personal Rapid Transit Capacity

Theburgeoninginterestinpersonalrapidtransit(PRT)inIndiaishighlightingtheissueofPRTcapacity.Thisisafairlycomplextopicthatwillbedealtwithfairly
briefly here. Note: network capacity is much more complex than just the guideway capacity that is dealt with here. PRT capacity is complex because it is
impactedbyanumberofissues:
Brickwallstopping(BWS)criteria.ThisisarailroadsafetycriterionthatmanybelievenottobeapplicabletoPRT.BasicallyBWSrequiresthatatrainmustbeable
tostopbeforehittingaprecedingtrainifthatprecedingtraininstantaneouslyturnsintoastationarybrickwall.InordertomeetBWSthetimebetweentrains
(orTPodsinthecaseofPRT)mustbeadjustedbasedonspeedandthemaximumavailable,orallowable,deceleration.
Deceleration.Themaximumdecelerationisafunctionoftheavailablefrictionandofwhetherpassengersarestandingorsitting,wearingseatbelts,etc.The
availablefrictionordecelerationforcevarieswiththetypeofPRTsystem.PRTsystemsdrivenanddeceleratedbylinearinductionmotorsrelyontheirmotorsfor
theirprimarybreakingforceandaretypicallyindependentoffrictionandthusweather.Themaximumbreakingdecelerationtheyapplyistypicallylessthanwhat
isavailable.RubbertiredPRTsystems,ontheotherhand,aredependentonthefrictionbetweentheirtiresandtheridingsurfacewhichcanbedramatically
impactedbyweather.Thesesystemswillusuallyhaveweathermitigationplansaimedatmaintainingfrictionaboveabout0.25GwhereGistheforceofgravity.
Minimumheadway.Thisistheminimumtimebetweenvehiclesmeasuredfromthefrontofonevehicletothefrontoftheother.ForBWScriteria,itvariesfrom
about1.4secondswith0.50Gdecelerationforceat15mphtoabout3.2secondswith0.25Gdecelerationforceat30mph.WithoutBWScriteriamanysuppliers
claimtheywillachieveminimumheadwaysof0.5seconds.Cabintaxidemonstrated0.5secondPRTheadwaysbutneverprovedenduranceorsafetyatthese
headways. We therefore believe it prudent to plan for minimum headways of no less than 1.0 seconds. Headway is strongly tied to capacity since reducing
headwaybyhalftheoreticallydoublescapacity.
Occupancy.ThisisthenumberofpassengersperTpod.Occupancyisalsostronglytiedtocapacitysincedoublingtheoccupancytheoreticallydoublescapacity.
HoweverincreasingPRToccupancyduringpeakhoursusuallyinvolvesridesharing.Thiscanbeeasilyaccomplishedonsmallsystemswithfewstationsbutis
difficulttoaccomplishonlargesystemswithmanystations.Imaginehowlongapassengerboundtostation57ina100stationsystemwouldhavetowaitfor
anothertoarrivealsoboundforstation57.Ridesharingprotocolstoovercomethisproblemwillbethesubjectofafuturearticle.
The table below provides the theoretical guideway capacity in passengers per hour based on variations in the parameters discussed above. The reasonable
capacityofPRTguidewaysisseentorangebetweenabout1,000and14,000passengersperhour.SincePRTsystemstendtocostmuchlessthanotherfixed
guidewaysystems,itisusuallyusefultocomparethecostsrequiredtomeetthecapacitydemand.
