InitialFormsofInterpretationandtheTwoPointCode
Theoriginalapproachtointerpretationofthescoreswassimple.Mostusersassumedthatanindividualwithcharacteristicssimilarto
thoseofoneofthecriteriongroupswouldlikewisehaveasignificantelevationontheappropriatescale.Hence,psychopathswould
haveahighelevationonthePdScale.However,interpretationofthescoresisnotthatsimple.Experiencesoonshowedthata
disturbedindividualcouldhaveelevationsonallthescales.Psychologiststhereforeturnedtowardspatternanalysis,butstudies
showedthatthisapproachwasequallyfutile.
Atthispoint,cliniciansbegantolookatthepossibleadvantagesofanalyzingthetwohighestscales.Byconductingresearchon
peoplewhoshowedspecifictwopointcodes,developerscouldempiricallydeterminethemeaningofMMPIelevations.Thevalidity
oftheMMPIwasthereforeincreasedbyfindinghomogenousprofilepatternsdeterminingthecharacteristicsofpeoplewhodisplayed
thesepatterns.Hencenewcriteriongroupswerecreated,comprisedofpeoplegroupedonthebasisoftheirMMPiprofiles.This
approachtointerpretingtheMMPIscoreswasmoreeffectivethananypreviousattempts.
