Thereforeoneofthegreatestchallengesinunderstandinghumanbehavioristounderstand
humanemotionalexperience.Whatemotionsdoweexperienceandunderwhatcircumstances?
Howdoemotionspredictbehavior?Andhowcanonesemotionalexperiencecontributetowards

Beforeweattempttounderstandhowsuchorganscontributetoourunderstandingofemotions,
weneedtoexplorehowsuchphysiologicalresponsesemergeandtheunderlyingtechnology
usedtodetectsuchresponses.Theautonomicnervoussystem(ANS)isresponsiblefor
innervatingdifferentorgansinthebodysuchastheheartandtheskin(sweatglands).TheANS
isdividedintotwobranches,thesympatheticnervoussystem(SNS)andtheparasympathetic
nervoussystem(PNS).ThelayoutoftheneuralprojectionsofSNSontheheartandsweat

normal(McCorry2007)

Throughsensors,datarelatingtoheartandskinactivitycanbeexaminedintheformofheart
rate,heartratevariability,electrodermalactivityandskintemperature.Measuringthe
physiologicalactivityoftheseorganscanprovideinsightintotheactivityoftheANS.
