ADJACENCY MATRIX

ARCHITECTURAL STYLE

The building of interest is 2010 Main St. The historic style of the
building is Second Empire which can be seen through
rectangular tower and the use of paired columns that have
designs sculptured around the windows and doors. The building
constructed mostly of brick and steel which is part of the
history of Pittsburgh during the rise of the Steel Industry.

CONCEPT STATEMENT

Establishing a creative and stimulating environment is

paramount in the development of the Starks residence. The use
of vibrant colors to evoke creativity matched with warm and
inviting hues will create the perfect living environment for this
artistic couple. The layout of the home will have a clean
modern look similar to modern Scandinavian influences. The
colors used will be used as accents to provide life to the
sometimes lifeless modern design elements. Warm and inviting
colors will be used for the dining room and calm neutral tones
will be a primary theme for the living room. Blues and green
colors fro the bedroom will create a calm and relaxing setting
for the couple.

CODE ANALYSIS

Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using sprinklers in residential applications. Identify if sprinkler
systems are required in new residential construction in your locality. Explain if you feel they should be required in all
renovations of existing residential buildings
The advantages of residential sprinkler applications outweigh the disadvantages. According to the National Fire
Protection 85% of deaths happen at home. With a residential sprinkler system will cut the risk of death by 80% and
the property loss by 70%. A sprinkler system will provide more piece of mind when it comes to fire safety and also
decrease dependence on the Fire Department possibly being a step to late. Having a sprinkler system will also allow
the homeowner to have the proper fire extinguishers for electrical or chemical fires. The only disadvantage is the
cost. Sprinkler system could be considered a premium for older homes and because Pennsylvania does not mandate
older constructed homes have sprinkler systems. Homeowners may opt out of this option, however it is a great
investment and it can save on insurance premium cost. Existing building and renovations should require sprinkler
system implemented because the home ages malfunctions from old electrical wirings, older gas furnaces or even
exposed structural damages can provide a serious safety hazard that the lack of decent fire safety system could turn
into the end of a home completely.

STUDY MODEL ANALYSIS

What elements can be modified to achieve better symmetrical or asymmetrical balance?
Each room has ample space and balance is provided with the Office and Music Room being connected and
side by side. I considered separating the room due to the idea that the music room would be considered
to loud to be next door however. With this being a creative household I didnt see much of an issue.
Where are pleasing proportions seen in the model? The pleasing proportions can be seen in the
living room area. The view due to the ample treatment will provide a high amount of natural lighting which
also enhance the living space and help with utility cost.
How does scale play a role in the mass of the furniture arrangement? This gave me a feel for
how much I could really use in placing furniture in the living room. Making sure the seating could be
presented in a way that highlighted the view was my main priority.
What are the dominant and subdominant forms seen in the design? The dominant form would
be the construction of the Office and Music Room. The subdominant form would be the furniture.
Although, if a full layout of furniture and utilities were implemented, They would be the dominant forms.

DESIGN JUSTIFICATION
The Starks are very creative in their lives and careers. Because of this, work such as
photography and music blur together instead of separate part of everyday life. The design
concept is more a simplistic design with modern pieces of furniture. Modern era elements are
used throughout the house most prominently in the Living Room. The Bedroom provides a
sense of calm and Zen. The visual of the bed alone gives the room a focal that exudes rest and
the Chaise Lounge gives the Starks retreat to and relax as well. The office and music room
being next door to each other is meant as a focal space for but to provide a closeness in their
relationship while focusing on their craft. This space is a reminder that they are both just a step
away from each other. The artwork used throughout the home was meant to provide
inspiration and stimulate creativity as well. The artwork was meant to keep them both on their
toes and incite their emotions and feelings.
