Man dies in RCMP custody

An intoxicated man died while

riving at the Gleichen detachment.
The 47-year-old Strathmore man
had been causing a disturbance in
the Vulcan hospital, being verbally
abusive to the staff and disruptive.
RCMP were called to the scene

The man’s name had not been
released at press time. The RCMP
Major Crimes Unit will lead the in-
vestigation into the circumstances
behind the death.

1991 GMC Sierra pickup truck
was stopped at the stop sign on
Highway 817, South of Highway
901. As a Westbound semi tractor-
trailer was approaching the inter-
section, the driver of the pickup
pulled north into the intersection
and was stuck by the semi tractor-
trailer.
The two 18-year-old males in
the pickup sustained serious in-
jury. The driver of the pickup was
transported by STARS air ambu-
lance to the Foothills Hospital.
The passenger was also trans-
ported to the Foothills via ground
ambulance, where they have both
been treated for their injuries. The
driver of the semi was not injured
in the collision.
An RCMP collision reconstruc-
tion analyst is assisting the Strath-
more RCMP members with scene
investigation. Alcohol is not be-
lieved to be a factor at this time.
The collision is still under inves-
tigation.

Active living at Wheatland school

Students at Wheatland elementary spent
time learning about active living and
healthy choices. The events ranged from
archery to soccer, and indoors there were
dance lessons and healthy smoothies
available.

Healthy eating and active
living is talked about almost
daily, but many kids do not
know what it means.
The Golden Hills School
Division has been asking
schools to implement more
healthy initiatives, and find
ways to teach the kids to be
active and healthy. Susan
Shearer of Wheatland Ele-
mentary School thought of a
way to do just that. She want-
ed to find a way to bring the
school and the community to-
gether, and so she created the
Active Living Community Day.
“It was kind of a brain-
child of mine, how to meld
the school and community
together,” said Shearer.
Activities took place both
inside and outside the school,
starting at 1 p.m. May 13.
The students were treated to
healthy smoothies, and at one
station they were taught how
much sugar is really in their
favourite drinks.
“This is a great activity for
the kids to do during the
school day. They are cover-
ing nutrition and healthy
choices for snacking. This is
a really great activity that’s
getting them involved and
trying it out,” said Timothea
Jakubowski, one of the teach-
ers.
The students participated
in a short dance lesson, ar-
chery, soccer, football and T-
ball among other activities.

ticipate in the activities in-
cluding special needs child

Chicken Penne Pasta Bake Thought for the week ~
1 ½ cups multigrain penne pasta, uncooked Remember silence is sometimes the best answer.
1 (10 ounce) bag fresh baby spinach
1 pound boneless chicken breasts, cut into bite-size pcs.
1 tsp. dried basil 1 ½ cups pasta sauce
1 2/3 cups diced tomatoes, drained 2 tbsp parmesan cheese
¼ cup light cream cheese 1 cup mozzarella - shredded

Heat oven to 375 degrees.

Cook pasta, adding spinach to the boiling water for the last 1 minute.
Heat a large non-stick skillet sprayed with cooking spray on
medium-high heat. Add chicken and basil, cook 3 minutes or until
chicken is no longer pink, stirring frequently. Add pasta sauce and
tomatoes and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low, simmer 3 minutes
or until chicken is cooked through. Stir in cream cheese spread
until melted.
Drain pasta and spinach and add to chicken & tomato mixture.
Stir in ½ cup mozzarella cheese. Stir gently. Spoon into
2 litre or 8” square baking dish. Bake 20 minutes or until
heated through. Sprinkle with remaining
mozzarella cheese

for Haiti

Gavey were two students
who volunteered their time
during lunch to sell freezies
to raise money for Haiti. Due
to the bad weather students
had to wait for a nice sunny
day, which they finally had
on Thursday May 13. The
freezies were being sold
for a minimum of .50 cents
though many students were
just giving whatever change
was in their pocket. Over
this past school year stu-
dents from Strathmore High
School have raised over
$6,000 for the earthquake
relief fund.

Tapestry of Arts night the day be-

The 50 plus group at the Hope
Community Church held a night of
music this past Sunday. A small
gathering of some local talent came
out to entertain the 50+ community.
The 50+ group, organized by Karen
and Chuck Bayley get together
about once a month to plan differ-
ent events. Some of the local tal-
ent that came out on Sunday were
Jacinda and Talia Sinclair (violin),
Rosella and Friends, John Portal,
Chuck Bayley and Amy Wegner.

Tea, Bake sale a success

The United Church of Canada celebrat-
ed its 85th anniversary, and in Strathmore,
it was celebrated with a strawberry tea.
On Sunday, members of the community
and the church joined together for tea and
strawberry shortcake. It was a social after-
noon, and for $3 people were able to sit
and be served their tea and cake, and after
they could purchase things from the bake
sale or crafts tables.
The tea was open to anyone to stop in
and enjoy.
“I saw there would be a tea and thought
it would be so neat to be involved, and
it was,” said Hilda Anderson, who helped
serve.
Members of the church and the commu-
nity donated all of the items sold at the
sale.
“You wouldn’t believe what we had, we
didn’t even have room for it all,” said Ethel
Nielson, who helped at the bake sale table.

There was everything available from jams
and jellies to pies, cookies and cupcakes.
The church quilting group also dis-
played the 30 quilts they have made since
Christmas. The quilts were not sold, but
will instead be given away to the Com-
munity Crisis Society, Victim Services and
the Mustard Seed, among other places in
need.
“A lot of them (church members) are in-
volved in the community as well, not just
the church,” said Jan Giles.
There were door prizes given out: Fran
Kehler won a basket full of goodies and
Alice Christison won place mats.
“It was very nice, the strawberry short-
cake was delicious,” said Christison.
“It was beautiful. I don’t eat strawber-
ries so they were kind enough to give me
a piece without any,” said Kehler.
Approximately 100 people attended
the tea, and a portion of the funds raised
will go to the mission and service fund in
Toronto, and the rest will be put into the
special project fund at the church.

Blading for cancer

Winnipeg business student Daniel
Cloutier, 21, is taking a different ap-
proach to raising money for cancer.
Cloutier was struck by inspiration af-
ter his uncle lost his fight with cancer
a few years ago and more recently his
grandmother was diagnosed.
He gathered his girlfriend Chantal
Courcelles, and his friend Eric Foidart,
and with the help of sponsors, like the
people from GNR Camping World in
Winnipeg, he began his trek.
Cloutier is rollerblading across Canada
to raise money for cancer research. He
began his trip on May 1, starting in Van-
couver, and hopes to end it on July 31
in Halifax.
On May 13 Cloutier went through
Strathmore, not long after leaving Cal-
gary with a police escort.
“I’m trying to do about 75km a day,
and on nice pavement I can go for a
long time. At night the team stops at
campgrounds,” said Cloutier.
His mission is not to target one type
of cancer but to raise money and aware-
ness to all types. He had been planning
the trip for about a year and wanted to
do it while he is young.
He has found that many people have
been friendly and helpful thus far into
his trek, and has been fortunate the
wind has been at his back, helping to
push him along.
“Everyday people are stopping at the
side of the road to get pictures,” said
Cloutier.
Rollerblading has always been some-
thing he has been passionate about,
and so when he set his mind to journey
across the country raising money, it was
