Bishop’s Special Offering for the Dakotas Annual Conference

The Dakotas Annual Conference’s special offering for 2010 is the Bishop’s Missions Project.
Organizations in each of the Dakotas’ districts have been chosen as recipients of this offering. Zion UMC
is in the Three Rivers District, whose assigned charity is Aid, Inc. in Mandan ND. Aid, Inc.’s mission is to
provide assistance to low-income working poor, considering all needs, at the same time creating self-
esteem and promoting the strength of the family unit. Aid Inc. offers a Self Help Center providing
emergency services, a Thrift Store and a Food Pantry.
**Bishop Deb Kiesey has requested that we gather any of the following items for Aid, Inc:
• Liquid hand soap, Bath soap
• Large-sized diapers
• Shampoo, Toilet paper
• Paper towels
• Laundry detergent
Pastor Russ, and Lay Members Ellen Myrick and Pam Whaley, will take our donations to Bismarck for the
Annual Conference meeting, June 9-12. Thank you for taking part in reaching those nearest to Jesus’
heart!

Feed My Sheep – Senior High School Sunday School Class Food Drive
This Sunday is the last day that Zion’s Senior High Sunday School class will collect items for our local food
pantry (St. Vincent DePaul’s) during the Sunday School hour. Please bring non-perishable food items,
personal care items (new & unopened underwear, shampoo, razors, deodorant, body wash, etc.) and baby
food/care items. Thank you for your generosity!

Fundraiser for Youth Mission Trip - Silent Auction

The highest bidders are asked to pick up their items by Sunday, May 23rd. There are a number of un-bid
items that are available. Donations for these items can be made through Sunday. You may either give your
donation to Doug Peters on Sunday or bring it by the church office. Thanks to all who participated!

Sidewalk Sonday School – VOLUNTEERS & DONATIONS NEEDED
From May 31 – June 4, we will have Sidewalk Sonday School at Richard’s West Park. This is available for
all children ages 5-12. Games will begin at 4:45 p.m. and dinner will be at 5:15 p.m. After dinner, the music,
lesson and crafts will be conducted by Dakota Conference staff (ending time is 7:30 p.m.). What we need
from Zion are more “Shepherds” to help the children & take part in their lesson (thanks to those who have
signed up). Food and monetary donations are still needed (please see sign-up sheet in the Narthex).
Please contact Nancy Evans (ny_evans@yahoo.com) if you have questions or if you would like to help with
this community mission project. We need your assistance to make this work!

Sunday Worship Music Opportunities

Available dates: Sunday worship services between Memorial Day and Labor Day (May 30th – September
5th). Musical offerings: Instrumental or vocal; solo or ensemble. If you have a special sacred musical
offering that will enhance the ZUMC worship experience, Zion's summer special music series is a great
time to share. Reserve your Sunday early so that you get the date that works best for you.
Contact John Shabb for more information and scheduling, email: jshabb@medicine.nodak.edu home
phone: 775-5004.

Parish Nurse
For health questions and/or concerns, our Parish Nurse, Bette Olson, can be reached on her cell phone
(218-791-5151) or at the church office.

Sunday School Teachers Needed for 2010-2011

The Education team is planning for next year's Sunday School. We invite all of this year's teachers back
and we are looking for more teachers! We would like to increase the number of classes offered for our
children, if possible. This year we combined several years together. Please consider teaching next year! If
you are interested, please talk to anyone on the Education team: Sue Carter, Nancy Evans, Carrie
Jackson, Barb Krueger, Jill Kuster or Cynthia Shabb. You may also e-mail Cynthia to volunteer or ask any
questions. Thank you for considering this opportunity to serve. cshabb@hotmail.com

Zion’s Love Feast

On Tuesday, July 27th, Zion will be serving the Love Feast. We will need monetary donations, as well as
volunteers to help prepare and serve the meal. Please let the church office know if this is something you
would like to do.

Prayer Chain

The purpose of Zion’s prayer chain is to offer and receive prayer support during times of need. To sign up
for email alerts, contact Connie Sherwood at csherwood@gfschools.org or floblue@aol.com or the church

This Week’s Lectionary Reading

Day of Pentecost. The liturgical color is red, which symbolizes fire and the coming of the Holy

• Romans 8:14-17
• John 14:8-17

This Week’s Bible Teaching

Text: Acts 2:1-21

Sermon Focus: The first followers of Jesus weren’t energized by wind or sunlight or methane or nuclear
fusion. No, their power came from the Holy Spirit of God, a force that enabled them to speak in diverse
languages and offer a word of gospel hope. Their power came from God, and it was a force that could –
and did – change the world.
