Morris Countys Dick Griffith Going into
State Bowling Hall of Fame
I probably met this bowler at least 25 years ago. Today he looks the
same as he did then, so I refer to Dick Griffith as the Dick Clark
(ageless) of Morris County Bowling. This county Hall of Famer will
be inducted into the New Jersey USBC BA Hall of Fame in October.
I talked with Dick in October of 2014, right before he was scheduled for some serious shoulder surgery, to replace the area itself. He
had posted his 26th and 27th perfect games recently, but said he had
endured pain like a toothache for 2 years, and so he had to face
the scalpel. At the time I asked if he had any bowling goals and he
said a long-range goal was to be inducted into the State Hall.
Here is some background on Mr. Nice Guy. His grandfather, the
late Miller Roff got him started in junior leagues 60 years ago. Mr.
Roff was a friend of Tony Martone who owned Creamos bowling
alley in Roxbury. The Griffith boys were close to Frankie and
Richie Martone in age, so Tony and his sons would pick Dick and
his brother up and they would all head to the lanes. Griffith says that
the famed junior coach Chick Pedrick was instrumental in getting
him to the level where he is now, once he switched to junior bowling at Dover Lanes. Pedrick, himself a county Hall of Famer, is
known for coaching other notable locals such as Jimmy Mack and
Bobby Dickerson.
Among his many bowling achievements, Dick won the NJ State
Doubles with Jim Beyel and came in second in All Events the same
year. As a youth bowler, he was on a national championship team
with Lou Sommer, Jimmy Hubbart, Randy Thorn, and Jeff Holmes.
A bigger thrill was when the boys were presented at the Worlds
Fair. This team bowled in major tournaments together and bowl in
home-on-home challenges. Heres a did you know moment: Dick

had the first ever 300 at Sparta Lanes on October 2, 1972 and
received $300 from lanes proprietor Harv Ely (a dollar for each
pin). Nearly 44 years later to the day (October 1), Dick will have
his State Hall induction. He has posted 13 800s and 27 300s among
his many achievements.
Dick was notified a few weeks ago that he, Neil Feingold, Joseph
Pompilio and Lou Colucci will be inducted. I dont think I was surprised more than just humbled, he said. (Bowling) is something
Ive always done well and to be recognized for it is beyond belief.
He is happy that he made it in, as the process is long and involved
after an applicant/nominee meets the initial criteria (on a point system).
Dicks passion for the sport was evidenced when, following surgery, he went lefty with lighter weight bowling balls, but says he
was getting frustrated. He finally went back to bowling right
handed in the summer of 2015 with a lighter ball, and returned after
that to his winter leagues. Only within the past month has he been
feeling like my normal self again. His surgeon said to let him
know when Dick posts his next 300, as the doctor never did this
procedure on a bowler before.
Dick is retired from AT&T/Lucent and resides in Morris Plains
with Kathleen, his wife of 44-plus years. They have three daughters,
Tara, Megan and Maureen, and 4 grandchildren: Ryan, 13, Kate, 10,
Thomas, 8, and Claire, 5.

Parker Bohn Leads at 2016

USBC Senior Masters
By Matt Cannizzaro and Aaron Smith - USBC
LAS VEGAS - The first day of qualifying at the 2016 United States
Bowling Congress Senior Masters turned out to be a successful venture
for Parker Bohn III of Jackson, New Jersey, and those who spend time
close to him.
The USBC and Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Famer set the
pace through the first of the event's three qualifying rounds at Sam's Town
Bowling Center, rolling games of 244, 231, 256, 260 and 267 for a 1,258
five-game total Tuesday, while his roommate for the week, John Donovan
of Melbourne, Florida, came within one strike of taking the lead later in
the day.
Donovan needed to shoot 282 or better in his final game to catch Bohn
and started the finale with nine consecutive strikes before leaving back-toback washouts in the 10th frame for a 272 game and 1,248 total for the
day.
Fellow Jackson resident John Petraglia, also a USBC and PBA Hall of
Famer, finished the day in third place with 1,224. Ernie Segura of Taylor,
Michigan, is fourth with 1,205, and Eric Forkel of nearby Henderson,
Nevada, is fifth with 1,198.
The leading trio of southpaws each bowled on a different squad, with
Bohn's performance coming on the fresh 40-foot USBC Senior Masters
lane condition.
"Things ended up being a lot better than I expected going in," said Bohn,
who owns 35 PBA national titles, including the 2001 USBC Masters, and
three PBA50 Tour victories. "I played farther inside yesterday in practice
but saw some other lefties playing out and decided to come in today with
an open mind and a plan to try some different things in practice. I feel like
I have two or three different options, with the main goal being to get all I
can for now. It's like a new event once match play starts."
Bowling on the final squad of the day gave Donovan a chance to scout
the lanes and get an idea of how they were being played through the first
10 games of traffic on the left side. With the lanes only being oiled one
time per day, Donovan's first block came on the double-burn.
"I saw a lot of lefties playing more inside, but I wanted to stay as far left
as possible, so I wouldn't be affected by the right-handers as they moved
left throughout the block," Donovan said. "I was hoping to get to 50 or 60
over, but I ended up have a good look and figured I could get more. I just
never expected it to be as much as it was. I don't think I doubled in any
10th frames, so that cost me a few more pins. I'm absolutely thrilled right
now, though."
The 50-year-old Donovan, a rookie this year on the PBA50 Tour,
already has learned a lot from Bohn this season, having crossed with the
hall of famer in his first two Tour stops. That experience definitely helped
him.
"Bowling with Parker at the first two stops really helped with my nerves
and learning what's happening out there on the lanes," Donovan said. "I
don't really bowl as much as some of these guys, so talking to Parker and
learning from him definitely made me feel more comfortable."
The roommates will lead the field of 263 Senior Masters competitors
back onto the lanes at Sam's Town for the second round of qualifying.
Qualifying will conclude, with 15-game pinfall totals determining the
63 bowlers who will join defending champion Amleto Monacelli of
Venezuela in the double-elimination match-play bracket.
Monacelli is tied for 12th place after the opening round with a 1,139
total. The USBC and PBA Hall of Famer is guaranteed the No. 64 seed
if he falls out of the cut, but he can improve his seeding for match play
during qualifying.

Rocio Restrepo Snags Top Seed for

PWBA Greater Detroit Open Finals
By Terry Bigham - PWBA
CANTON, Mich. Heading into
the
Professional
Womens
Bowling Association Greater
Detroit Open second-round leader
Rocio Restrepo of Colombia really wanted to nail down the top
spot for the television show.
For the second consecutive day,
Restrepo cranked it up for the final
few games to lead her match-play
group and claim the No. 1 seed for
the PWBA Greater Detroit Open
TV show. The stepladder finals
taped June 26 during the Go
Bowling
PWBA
Players
Championship will air Tuesday,
July 19, on CBS Sports Network.
After 18 games, Restrepo was in
second overall, trailing Stefanie
Johnson of Grand Prairie, Texas,
by 24 pins. But Restrepo closed
out match play with games of 235,
279 and 234 to win her group and
make her second TV show of the
season.
Im really happy with the way I
finished; I got the job done, said
Restrepo, who lost to Liz Johnson
in the opening television stepladder match of the PWBA Las Vegas
Open. I knew I needed to put
something together toward the
end. I just wanted to take the No. 1
seed. I like that position better
than having to climb the whole

ladder. You are in a position to

have more chances and get breaks
(from a lower seed), but at No. 1
you just have to win one match.
And Im excited for that.
Restrepo said she felt she has
been bowling well, but also felt
she just hasnt caught any breaks.
It finally happened this week, I
got breaks when I needed them,
and I committed and made shots
when I needed them, too,
Restrepo said. I kept making
shots and I put it together. That
was important to me this week. If
I know I can kill it at the end, I had
better make shots. I wasnt taking
the last three games for granted
and that really helped because
thats where I got all my pins.
Also making her second TV
appearance is Li Jane Sin of
Malaysia. Sin made the stepladder
finals of the 2016 United States
Bowling Congress Queens in Las
Vegas but lost in the opening
match.
I told myself to just enjoy the
game, Sin said. I learned at the
Wichita Open how the environment feels in match play. I just
learned from my mistakes and
applied my strengths.
Johnson, the 2015 PWBA
Rookie of the Year, was second in
her match-play group. She beat

Brittany Smith of Des Moines,

Iowa, in the Group A stepladder to
earn the No. 3 seed for TV. Smith
had advanced with a 163-133 victory over Natalie Cortese of
Hoffman Estates, Illinois.
The final TV spot went to
Indonesias Tannya Roumimper,
who took a 244-206 victory over
Missy Parkin of Laguna Hills,
California. Parkin reached the
Group B stepladder final with a
235-221 victory over Mexicos
Sandra Gongora.
The competition kicked off with
a six-game block that narrowed
the field from the 32 cashers to the
top 12 players for round-robin
match play. The 12 finalists were
split into two groups of six for
match play, which consisted of six
games including a final position
round. The competitor with the
highest pinfall total in each group
earned a spot in the TV finals, and
the next three highest in each
group advanced to the group
stepladder.
Go to PWBA.com for more
information about the PWBA
Tour. Qualifying and match-play
rounds of PWBA Tour events are
broadcast on Xtra Frame, the
exclusive online bowling channel
for the Professional Bowlers
Association.

JUNICHI YAJIMA
Continued from Page 1

Petraglia stepped up in the final frame with a max score of 279 and
a chance to lock up the win with nine pins on his first offering.
The left-hander threw his first errant shot of the match, knocking
down just four pins. He left the 2-4-6-7-8-10 combination and was
unable to convert, ultimately falling 245-239 and giving Yajima a shot
at the trophy. Petraglia took home $3,500 for the third-place effort.
"I expected him to get the strike and win," said Yajima, who learned
to compete with the best in the world under the watchful eye of USBC
and PBA Hall of Famer Dick Weber. "I was shocked."
On the way to the meeting with Petraglia, Yajima stayed clean and
rolled four consecutive strikes in the fifth through eighth frames to
hold off Ronald Holt of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, 236-199. Holt's
undoing proved to be the left lane, which yielded a pair of open frames
against Yajima. Holt finished fourth, earning $3,000.
The left lane also was a challenge for fourth seed Sam Carter of Ben
Lomond, California, who was unable to gain any momentum in the
opening match against Holt. Holt struck on five of his first six shots
and cruised to a 226-185 win. Carter earned $2,500 for the fifth-place
finish.
All competitors this week bowled 16 games of qualifying over two
days, before the field was cut to the top 25 percent (32 players) for the
four-game cashers' round. All pinfall carried over, and the top five
players advanced to the stepladder finals based on their 20-game
totals.

"The ball I was using was going a tad longer on that lane and wasn't
kicking out the 7 pin," said Tan, the runner-up at the 2013 QubicaAMF
World Cup. "I decided to move to something that reads up earlier, and it
ended up kicking out the corners for me. It was intense. I just stuck to
my routine and took it one shot at a time."
Pluhowsky earned her spot in the finals by defeating Hui Fen New, one
of six members of Team Singapore in the 80-player field, in an exciting
semifinal match, 248-246. New needed to record a strike on her opening
shot of the 10th frame to advance to the championship round but left a
10 pin to end her run up the stepladder.
New, the only right-hander on the show, recorded a 257-199 win over
Anggie Ramirez Perea of Austin, Texas, in the opening match.
"It feels great," Tan said. "Singapore has two wins, so this bodes well
for our country and proves our program is doing well. We owe a big
thanks to our federation and sponsors for their support."
