Louis J. Catania, of Florida, has been one of the most widelyregarded proponents and leaders of the transition from
optometry as it was practiced in the 1 970s to the primary eye
and vision medical health profession that is today in the 21st
Century. Dr. Catania was a pioneer in post-graduate residency
education, and the expansion of the scope of optometry to not
only diagnose, but treat eye disease.
An internationally known lecturer, Dr. Catania has received
numerous awards, including Review of Optometrys 10 Most
Influential Optometrists of the 20th Century; Barons Five
Star (highest) rating for medical textbooks for Primary Care
of the Anterior Segment: 2nd Edition; Distinguished Service
Award from both the Optometric Glaucoma Society and the
Ocular Surface Society; and many others from state affiliate
associations, colleges of optometry, and other national
organizations.
Dr. Catania, over a fourteen-year period, provided his expertise
in primary eye care optometry to 49 states and 32 countries in
the areas of legislative, statutory, education, and clinical care.
His lectures have been cited as high-energy and clinically
relevant, as evidenced by his naming as keynote speaker at
meetings in seven different countries. He is a well-published
author, with 160 articles in the ophthalmic literature.
Throughout his career, Dr. Catania has been an active member
of the American Optometric Association and is a Fellow of
the American Academy of Optometry. Not only has he given
generously of his time to his profession, he has also actively
volunteered for a number of community organizations,
including Special Olympics, the Association for the Blind of
Monroe County, Upper Dublin Committee on Teenage Alcohol
and Substance Abuse, and Orbis International, participating in
humanitarian missions in eye care to third world countries.

On June 30th, a close friend

and member of the Marco
Louis J. Catania, O.D.
family, Dr. Louis Catania, will
be honored as the 2016
inductee to the National Optometry Hall of Fame at the
American Optometric Association Congress in Boston.
This recognition and award is the highest national honor
bestowed upon an optometric physician for their career
accomplishments. Indeed, over the years, he has been
recognized numerous times for his achievements in eye
care: clinically, educationally and through his literature
contributions (11 textbooks, over 160 published journal
articles and 2 pending manuscript submissions). His
lectures, for most of you, have been a source of new
technological information, innovative thinking, thoughtprovoking, and highly entertaining.
Since 1967, Marco has helped to pioneer vision
diagnostics and has been privileged to profile unique
products, processes, and professionals to the industry.
For more than 20 years, Lou has served many roles
with Marco. He has provided invaluable guidance as
our Senior Optometric Advisor immersed in clinical
research, educational programs, writing and consulting
with practitioners on subjects relating to our refractive
and diagnostic technologies. He continues to provide
these valued services representing Marcos sustained
commitment to the eye care community.
Much has certainly changed in eye care across these
years- but not the core commitment that Lou has
brought, and continues to deliver, to our profession
and industry, since 1969. If you have been privileged
to know Lou Catania, OD, your life has surely
been positively impacted clinically, academically,
professionally, or personally. Marco is enormously proud
of our long and honored relationship with Lou and we
hope you will join us in congratulating him on this welldeserved, prestigious national honor.
Sincerely,
David Marco and the entire Marco family
