Louis J. Catania, of Florida, has been one of the most widelyregarded proponents and leaders of the transition from
optometry as it was practiced in the 1 970s to the primary eye
and vision medical health profession that is today in the 21st
Century. Dr. Catania was a pioneer in post-graduate residency
education, and the expansion of the scope of optometry to not
only diagnose, but treat eye disease.
An internationally known lecturer, Dr. Catania has received
numerous awards, including Review of Optometrys 10 Most
Influential Optometrists of the 20th Century; Barons Five
Star (highest) rating for medical textbooks for Primary Care
of the Anterior Segment: 2nd Edition; Distinguished Service
Award from both the Optometric Glaucoma Society and the
Ocular Surface Society; and many others from state affiliate
associations, colleges of optometry, and other national
organizations.
Dr. Catania, over a fourteen-year period, provided his expertise
in primary eye care optometry to 49 states and 32 countries in
the areas of legislative, statutory, education, and clinical care.
His lectures have been cited as high-energy and clinically
relevant, as evidenced by his naming as keynote speaker at
meetings in seven different countries. He is a well-published
author, with 160 articles in the ophthalmic literature.
Throughout his career, Dr. Catania has been an active member
of the American Optometric Association and is a Fellow of
the American Academy of Optometry. Not only has he given
generously of his time to his profession, he has also actively
volunteered for a number of community organizations,
including Special Olympics, the Association for the Blind of
Monroe County, Upper Dublin Committee on Teenage Alcohol
and Substance Abuse, and Orbis International, participating in
humanitarian missions in eye care to third world countries.
