GREAT POWER COMES WITH GREAT RESPONSIBILITY

By: BERNARD TERRAYO

(Subject for proof-reading)
Are you familiar with SPIDERMAN? He is given the uncommon ability to
swing, climb up walls, extra sensory, and tremendous strength. When you
were a child, you might probably be one of those who wish to follow his
footsteps and become powerful. But you know what; along with such power
is his noble effort to help humanity from evil threats. Alongside popularity is
a responsibility of saving lives by risking his own life and sacrificing his time
on the needy before his family and loved ones. Such acts are indeed greater
and noble than you can imagine. There goes the saying, With great power
comes with great responsibility.
On the other point of view, Spiderman is only part of ones creative
imagination, whereas in reality, web- throwing, and villains dont exist.
Although if we are going to scrutinize it more carefully, we fail to realize that
the popular clich that Spiderman did mentioned in the movie does reflect
the exact principle of many teachers today. Indeed, we may not be fictional
superheroes, but we can assert and consider ourselves as the modern- day
heroes. We unconsciously have great power that comes with great
responsibility.
Like super-mega heroes, we may lack the ability to fly or have the
super strength; we still have the irrevocable power to change the lives of
every student. You might ask how ? Isnt it true that apart more than
imparting the lessons, we touch lives? More than imparting the knowledge,
we share wisdom? More than words, we teach attitude?
Furthermore, through our seamless train of thought lies the childs
correct understanding and comprehension which will then be their
preparation for the upcoming battle. Yes, they are in a battle- a battle not for
the possession of power or valor, but for the realization of their dreams and
acquisition of a promising future. The knowledge that we have transferred
and the extensive training they underwent through our supervision becomes
their weapon. Truly, they dont carry the most exquisite sword, nor do they
wear the best amulet to conquer the odds. But, what they wear is not a
thing, but a motivation, a priceless, yet spectacular thing that divulged their
abilities and veered it from the world of ignorance to the field of brilliance.
That thing is education. Indeed, it is a responsibility of every teacher greater

than any profession or vocation is to look after each student and realize the
vision of creating a productive citizen of the community.
Thus, for this vision to be realized, it is then our responsibility as
teachers to be role models. If we want our students to be what we want them
to be, then we have to walk the talk. Our words and actions would serve as
an example. There are a lot of intangible lessons to learn from mere actions.
We have to come on time and end the class on time as scheduled to impose
respect to other peoples time, money and effort. We have to dress
accordingly to impose the lesson of authority and discipline. We must
prepare our lessons and deliver efficiently and effectively to impose the
values of commitment, passion, and professionalism. We must focus on
improvement by attending extensive training in order to impose the values
of humility and the willingness to improve and grow. We must cooperate with
the members of the workforce and have good attitude towards co-workers in
order to impose the values of teamwork and healthy working environment.
These responsibilities must be shouldered for the good of all concerned, for
the benefit of the business and for the benefit of the students who serves as
our boss and for our own betterment as productive employees.
You do not have to wear mask or be chemically mutated. Teacher on its
very nature is a hero and has its power to change lives. Profess the prowess.
Unleash the hero within you. And keep in mind that responsibility is
inevitable. Carry them with confidence and determination because if there is
great power, there is always an equal responsibility.
