14B. Laboratory Vane Shear Apparatus :

(Motorised) BIS 2720 (XXX). Same as SS-21, but motorized Rates
of rotation is 1/60. Suitable for operation on 220 volts, 50 cycles,
single phase A.C.

15. California Bearing Ratio Test Apparatus (Laboratory).

The CBR method is used for finding the relative bearing ratio and
expansion characteristics of soil of base, sub-base and sub-grade for
the design of roads, pavements and runways. It meets the
requirements of BIS-2720 Part XVI and consists of :
Load frame. Hand operated capacity 5000 kg.
One CBR Mould 150 mm dia and 175 mm high, complete with base
plate and collar 150 mm dia and 50 mm high.
One penetration Piston face dia 50 mm dia, Bracket.
Displacer Block 148 mm dia and 47.7 mm long.
Surcharge Weight 5 kg, and 2.5 kg with central hole and also slotted.
Tripod
Cutting collar.
Proving ring, capacity 1000 kg.
One dial gauge with least count .01 mm.
15A. California Bearing Ratio Apparatus (Laboratory Type
Motorised). Complete as above, but supplied with a motorized load
frame with rates of travel of lead screw 0.025 mm/min.; 0.05
mm/min.; 0.0625 mm/min.; 0.125 mm/min.; 0.25 mm/min.; 0.5
mm/min.; 0.625 mm/min.; and 1.25 mm/min.
N.B Universal Automatic Compactor SS. 12 may be used for
compacting the soil into CBR Mould.
15B. California Bearing Ratio Apparatus (Field Type).
This method of testing in situ testing piston penetration has been

adapted and developed by the US Corps of Engineers and is useful

for determining the load carrying capacity in the field when the in
place density and water contents are such that the degree of
saturation is 80 percent or greater, when the material is coarse
grained and choesionless so that it is not affected by changes in
water contents and when the material has been in place for several
years.
Specification : One leading Jack, 10000 kg. capacity, along with
swivel head for the jack. One penetration piston, machined and
hardened face .50 mm dia, threaded at the upper end to connect to
the various lengths of extension sleeves through a connector.
Extension Set consisting of : 2 length 5 cm; 2 lengths 10 cm.; 1
length 30 cm; 1 length 50 cm; 1 length 100 cm; used as spacers
between the proving ring and penetration piston. The lengths are
machined from seamless steel tubing. Connector set has eight
connectors for coupling the penetration piston and proving ring
assembly either directly or though extension pieces.
Bridge support of welded steel angle construction. It stands 30 cm.
high and 45 cm. wide at the feet, provided with a quick release screw
type clamp capable of sliding and locking anywhere along 250 cm
length of the bridge. Adjustable bracket for mounting the dial
micrometer.
