Subject Matter: Ch.2: Diversity
Objective: To briefly review Diversity with future teachers to give them the knowledge to be a
successful teacher in a diverse 21st century America. Specifically, the class will be given a
general recap of the melting pot vs. salad bowl cultural theories, socioeconomics, culture,
ethnicity, race, gender, individual identity, and exceptionalities. An activity will help future
teachers find creative ways to bring diversity education to the classroom.
Materials/Equipment: This lesson will be using: a PC computer, and overhead projector and
screen, a white board with markers (if available), and 2 videos from YouTube.
Instruction:
Slide 1: Begin with introductions and state topic.

Expected Outcomes: Audience members will be able to identify the various aspects of diversity
including: Melting Pot vs. Salad Bowl, culture, race, ethnicity, language, gender, sexual
orientation, socioeconomic conditions, health, identity, exceptionalities, challenges to diversity,
and cultural models. The audience will be able to identify creative ways to bring diversity to the
classroom.
Assessment Choices: Audience members will engage in an activity that encourages thinking
about creative ways to bring diversity education to the classroom.
