country will celebrate the 18th annual National Trails Day® (NTD), a long-standing celebration of America’s magnificent trail
system and its countless supporters and volunteers. More than 1,500 events will take place around the country including trail
maintenance, hiking, paddling, biking, horseback riding, bird watching, running and trail celebrations.

New Engines Deliver Exceptional Performance and


Refinement
The most significant changes on the 2010 Range Rover Sport
are to its powertrains. The vehicle benefits from two powerful
new engines: 510bhp LR-V8 5.0-liter supercharged and a 375bhp
LR-V8 5.0 liter naturally aspirated engine.
The LR-V8 engines are all-new and designed by the Jaguar
Land Rover powertrain team using an impressive collection
of state-of-the-art technologies. They were developed with an
emphasis on delivering a smooth, refined and responsive perfor-
mance, without a corresponding increase in fuel consumption.
Both meet the stringent ULEV2 emissions standards.

The performance of the all-new naturally aspirated LR-V8 is
now a virtual-match for the outgoing 4.2L supercharged engine

ing supercharged unit). For those who want the ultimate per-

The engines were developed in conjunction with Jaguar - the
first time engines have been designed from the outset with the
requirements of both brands in mind. Shared primary objectives
included the highest possible torque and fast response from low
revs.
Although the basic engine architecture is the same for each
brand, Land Rover engine requirements differ to satisfy demand-
ing all-terrain needs. For example, they feature a deeper sump
to accommodate the extreme tilting angles that Range Rover
Sport may be subjected to off-road. In addition, belt drives are
waterproofed, as are the alternator, air conditioning compressor,
power steering pump and starter motor.

n June 5, 2010, American Hiking Society and
outdoor enthusiasts across the country will
celebrate the 18th annual National Trails
Day® (NTD), a long-standing celebration of
America's magnificent trail system and its
countless supporters and volunteers. More
than 1,500 events will take place around the country including
trail maintenance, hiking, paddling, biking, horseback riding,
bird watching, running and trail celebrations.
Where do you go to find peace and quiet and make your
troubles melt away? Do you bike to a historic site on a rail
trail? Or hike to a mountain vista? Maybe you paddle to a
swimming hole or walk in your local park? The theme for
NTD 2010, Find Your Happy Place ☺, encourages all Americans
to get outside, connect with local hiking clubs, outdoor retail-
ers, local parks and recreation departments or federal land
managing agencies to experience, appreciate and celebrate
the outdoor places that make us happy. "Whether you’re an
avid outdoor adventure seeker or new to our nation’s network
of trails, American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day con-
nects children and adults with nature so all may experience
the joy and happiness that the outdoors elicits in each of us,”
said Greg Miller, American Hiking Society president.
Since 1993, National Trails Day has inspired thousands of
individuals and community groups to take part in activities
that promote healthy living and mental well being, protect
green space, educate youth and adults on the importance of

The National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds
Encourages its Members to Step up their Adoption of Green
Practices
Since the National Association of RV Parks and
Campgrounds launched its “Plan it Green” program three
years ago, more than 100 campgrounds and RV resorts across
the country have made a formal pledge to adopt environmen-
tally friendly practices, while informing their guests of the
benefits of doing the same.
But in an effort to encourage even more parks to par-
ticipate in the program – and to adopt a greater number of
green practices – the Larkspur, Colo.-based campground
association has partnered with the Woodall’s North American
Campground Directory to formally recognize qualifying parks
with a “Green Friendly” icon next to their listings in the
GoCampingAmerica.com and Woodalls.com travel planning
websites as well as the 2011 print edition of the Woodall’s
directory.

The farm’s headquarters, containing remnants of a black-
smith shop and a meat locker, is used today as the refuge’s
administrative offices. Visitors can also see the farm chap-
lain’s house, just converted into a museum called the Washita
Farm Heritage Center. The museum (open 9:00 a.m. to 3:00
p.m. Monday through Saturday, or by appointment) contains
historic farm tools, household appliances, furniture and pho-
tos. Visitors can also schedule historic farm tours here, led by
the Johnston County Historical Society. Other structures, such
as the old hog barn, now used to store refuge tractors, and the
chicken hatchery, are being evaluated for structural sound-
ness. A special tour each April, during the Arbuckle Simpson
Nature Festival, lets visitors view closed buildings. A bro-
chure, provided by refuge staff, tells the farm’s history. Refuge
staff plan to put the brochure online soon.
The refuge staff tries to tie the land’s past to the Service’s
conservation mission. “We farm about 1,000 acres a year of
wheat and corn — the same crops they grew,” says Refuge man-
ager Kristopher Patton. “While people historically marketed all
their crops for human consumption, we leave crops in the field
for wildlife, whether resident deer or migrating geese.”
Among the history buffs turned environmentalists through
exposure to the refuge, one can count the current president of
the Tishomingo Friends organization, a volunteer support group.
“She came out originally with a vision of doing historical stuff,”
says Patton. “Mary Jane Nelson is now a great advocate for the
Refuge System.”
