Grow a Greener Community – Become a Master Composter

Inspire others and make a difference in your community. The annual Master Composter Training
Program is currently accepting applications from Alameda County residents for the 2008 Class.
The Master Composter Program is a certificated, extensive compost course. Participants receive
training in the art and science of basic and worm composting, soil health, and Bay Friendly
gardening techniques. Participants use this knowledge to train others through a compost
community outreach project. All participants receive a compost bin and several composting and
gardening books, including the East Bay Municipal Utility District’s “Plants and Landscapes for
Summer Climates of the SF Bay Region.” Teachers who complete the program are eligible for a
$200 stipend to use toward school garden and/or classroom compost activities.
Classes will meet Tuesday nights weekly in Oakland from early February through mid-May
2008, plus a Saturday field trip. The Program offers graduate level and continuing education
credits from California State University at Hayward or credit from Merritt College Landscape
Horticulture Department. Master Composter training enhances the skills of community leaders,
activists, educators, environmentalists, gardeners, and recyclers. We encourage people of all
ages, abilities, and ethnic groups to apply. If you have ideas and energy for community actions,
this class is for you.
Complete an application by January 11, 2008. Reserve the evening of January 16 or 17 for an
interview. Visit our website at www.BayFriendly.org to apply on-line or download an
application. From the home page, click on the Bay-Friendly Gardening link on the bottom left,
click on the Residents icon, and then the Master Composter Program link. The website also
provides a class syllabus and examples of projects from past participants. For more information,
please contact StopWaste.Org at www.BayFriendly.org or 510-444-SOIL.

Call for Session Proposals: The Transportation and Land Use Coalition’s 11th Annual
Summit "Healthy Communities, Healthy Planet"
The Transportation and Land Use Coalition invites proposals for sessions for our 11th Annual
Summit, "Healthy Communities, Healthy Planet." How we build our communities and travel
within them directly affect our health. A safe neighborhood with amenities nearby increases the
amount that people will walk to schools, shops, and services. A reduced number of cars on the

road means cleaner air for everyone. And good transit service ensures everyone can access their
health care providers. Over the last few years, connections between these fields have been made;
too often, however, we still operate in separate worlds. Join TALC as we explore the
connections between land use, transportation, and health. Our 11th Annual Summit will bring
together advocates, activists, and practitioners from these fields for a day of speakers and
participatory sessions to get us working together on building healthier communities.
Our goals are:
- Educate attendees on latest work at the nexus of these fields;
- Build connections that will last beyond the day of the summit itself; and
- Activate participants to build healthier communities.
You can download a copy of the Session Proposal Form at:
http://www.transcoalition.org/cal/summit08/proposal.doc.
Contact Sandra Padilla (sandra@transcoalition.org) with any questions. Note that the deadline
for submitting session proposals is 5pm, Wednesday, January 9, 2008.

Biofuels are touted as the energy of the future but, already, unwanted consequences are
emerging. For example, the American thirst for transportation liquids has diverted more than a
fifth of our corn crop to ethanol production and the push in Europe and Asia toward biodiesel
blends has accelerated deforestation in Indonesia and Malaysia. David Fridley, an energy
scientist at Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, will discuss the role of biofuels in the world's
transportation systems and offer solutions.

Film: "Winged Migration": Tuesday, December 18, 2007

While Microcosmos brought us closer to the ground and revealed the secret lives of bugs,
Winged Migration takes us up, up and away for a bird's-eye view of the world. The startlingly
close-up footage was shot from all kinds of aircraft, including hot air balloons, paragliders and
remote-controlled devices that unobtrusively share space with the birds. Dramas unfold as the
birds struggle to find food and face menacing predators, which of course includes humans and
environmental disaster. (98m)
