    The Birth Matters for Peace Parents group is working to bring a midwife to the Peace River region of Alberta. They have gained support from local councils and the Primary Care Network for this initiative. Currently women in the region must travel long distances to access midwifery services. The group plans to form a stakeholder committee in the fall to develop a model to integrate a midwife into the local health system.     BirthMattersforPeaceParents(BMPP)isgainingsteadysupportfromlocalcouncilsintheirpursuitofbringing
    amidwifetotheregion.
    PriortoAlbertaHealthServiceannouncingearlierthisyeara$37millionincreasetothemidwifeprogram
    budgetoverthenextthreeyears,theprogramwascappedfinancially,whichmeanttheresourcesforproviding
    amidwifetoaruralareasuchasPeaceRiverdidnotexist.Uponlearningofthechange,BMPPsentaletterto
    theHealthMinisterrequestingfundsforamidwifetobeallocatedtotheregion,andhasmetwithmultiple
    councilsfromthesurroundingareasseekingsupportfortheinitiative.
    Wedidntseeanyreasonwhyweshouldntsupportthem,saidBobRegal,theMayorofGrimshaw.TheMDof
    thePeace,GrimshawandPeaceRiverwereopentotheideaofamidwifebeingmadeavailabletoresidentsof
    theregion.
    ThePrimaryCareNetwork(PRPCN)andBMPPmetonJune23forthefirsttimewithpositivereceptiononboth
    sides,andareplanningtoschedulefurthermeetingstoworktogetherregardingmaternalcareintheregion.

    LauraBekevichandMelanieBekevichJooscreatedtheBMPPin2013tofilltheneedthatthePeaceRegional
    ChildbirthAssociation,whichwasactivefordecades,leftwhentheydisbandedaround2005.Inorderto
    accuratelyjudgematernityneedsinthearea,BMPPhostedtheMCANListeningCampaigninPeaceRiverin
    Augustof2014,wheretheylearntthatwomenintheregionwantedaccesstoamidwife.
    Theresaresurgenceofwomenlookingfordifferentoptionsinmaternitycare,MelanieBekevichJoossaid,
    notingthatwomenareactivelyseekingoptionswhicharenotcurrentlyavailableinthePeaceRegion.Thisisa
    void,andwerejustplayingcatchup.
    Formanywomenseekingmidwiferyinthearea,somehavehadnochoicebuttotemporarilymoveortravel
    longdistancestohaveaccesstoone.SomeofthemhavecontactedtheirownMLAsandBMPPtoseewhat
    canbedonetoattractamidwifetotheregion.ShaunaRuttan,whotravelledtoEdmontoninordertohave
    accesstoamidwife,contactedherownMLAinhopesofbeingabletohaveoneavailableintheregion.
    IvetoldmyhusbandthatImnotinterestedinhavingasecondbabyunlessIcanhaveamidwife.Theresno
    wayImgoingtobeabletotraveltoEdmontonagainwithatoddler,Ruttansaid.
    TheCanadianGovernmentrequiresmidwivestohaveafouryeardegreebeforetheycanberegisteredbytheir
    provincesHealthServices.Unlikedoulas,midwivesaretrainedtoreplaceaphysicianandactasacoachfor
    womenfromtheprenataltopostpartumstagesofpregnancy.Midwivesareonlyabletohandle40birthsper
    yearsinordertoprovidethehighlevelofcareexpectedofthem.Theyareallowedtoperformdeliveriesbothat
    hospitalsandathome,thoughitismandatorytobewithin15minutesofasurgicalunitduringhomebirths.
    BMPPismeetingwithNorthernSunriseCountyonJune28andCountyofNorthernLightsonJuly12andis
    confidentthingswillgosmoothly.Theyarealsohopingtoorganizeapubliceventtodiscussmidwiferyandits
    benefits.
    Thenextstepwillbetoformastakeholdercommitteeinthefalltodevelopamodeltointegrateamidwifeinto
    thesystem.Oncethatsdone,Idontthinkmuchcanstopus,BekevichJoossaid.Theyplantoinvitepeople
    fromthetribalcouncil,healthservices,municipalities,andotherstojointhecommittee.
