00 Wednesday,

What it all stands for

While Kenny Newton wasnt the distinguished speaker

at the Northeast Montana Veterans Memorial Opening
Ceremony (Chuck Hayter, the man at lower left had that
duty), the World War II Veteran and POWs message
certainly packed a wallop. While he has been blind for
numerous years now, Kenny explained that while he
cant see the Veterans Memorial himself, he has a good
vision of what it looks like. He has been involved with
the project since the ground-breaking ceremony held
on May 14, 2015; Tom Markle and Steve Page saw to
that on a weekly basis. They would reveal to him what

was happening as the construction progressed and

the costs involved. But to me it doesnt really matter
what it looks like, Kenny said, explaining that what
is much more important is what this Memorial stands
for, adding that he knows that there is nothing like it
in the entire state of Montana! Kenny expounded to
an audience of approximately 1,000 that weve got to
have Patriotism and Spiritualism if we are to survive
as a country; we cant have one without the other.
Freedom isnt free, he concluded to an eruption of
applause and a standing ovation.

Master of the Northeast Montana Veterans Memorial

Ceremony held on July 4th, 2016 was Don Fast.
He did a superb job throughout the program, from
introduction of speakers to explaining the background
and history of the Memorial Park, and giving credit
where credit is due. A couple of humorous moments

centered around Kenny Newton. Says Don, Kenny

asked me if we were going to build a statue of him. I
told him, We cant pile it that high! And it was quite
a compliment that Don paid to him when Kenny had
finished his turn at the microphone. Don returned to
the podium and said, You stole my thunder, Kenny.

Welcome Fishermen!

#1.) WHY DID WE BUILD THIS PARK?

Because Northeast Montana is was the only
region of the State without an appropriate regional
memorial. Our vision was for a world class
destination to adequately distinguish the sacrifices
of past and present Veterans from NE Montana.
#2.) HOW LONG HAS THE PROJECT TAKEN?
Work on the memorial by the original Board of
Directors began 7 years ago in 2009.
#3.) WHAT VETERANS ARE INTENDED TO BE
HONORED?
This memorial is for all veterans, all branches of
the service currently serving or having served at
least 6 months and honorably discharged. The
memorial is intended to include National Guard
and Reserve Service from all military services.

#4.) ARE THE BLACK GRANITE WALL OF HONOR

TILES ONLY FOR DECEASED VETERANS AND
VETERANS FROM ONLY NORTHEAST MONTANA?

No. The Wall of Honor tiles are for all Veterans

currently living and/or deceased and any Veteran
important to a resident of NE Montana should be
considered appropriate for inclusion on our Walls.
#5.) How much do the Wall of Honor tiles cost?
How do you arrange for wall of honor tiles? Is
there room available for more tiles?
The tiles cost $225. Applications are available
from any BOD, most Vets clubs, many banks and
on line at veteransMT.org
There are about 1,300 tiles currently sold. There
is room for 3,680 on the 10 walls constructed. We
can add walls.
#6.) What has the memorial cost? Is it paid for?
The cost of the memorial and progress to date
rounded off is $1,000,000. Nothing has been
approved or put into place that has not been paid
for. The BOD has put a contingency fund in place for
future care, maintenance and improvements. That
fund is currently $60,000. The goal is $100,000.
#7.) How will future enhancements and maintenance
of the park be met?
We are not finished fund raising. Income is
primarily from 3 sources: Donations, Tile Sales,
and special contributions.
For example the
black granite benches cost $2,500. Trees can be
sponsored for $500.
#8.) Can any of the sculptures still be sponsored?
Yes. The cost of the 3 sculptures combined is
about $175,000. On average $60,000 each.
#9.) Is the Memorial finished? Any future plans?
The Memorial is not finished. Future enhancements
might include specific KIA vigils, a water feature
has been discussed, chimes, eternal flames have
all been discussed.
The opening ceremony represents the beginning,
not the end, of this Memorial potential.

#12.) When will the flags be flown?

By our flag protocol weather permitting and
generally speaking, the flags will be flown from
Memorial Day to Veterans Day; the USA flag all
year long. The park will essentially be closed
during the winter months.
#13.)
Who do I talk to with suggestions,
recommendations and constructive comments?
Any Member of the BOD or by mail, Box 202
Glasgow, Montana.
#14.) Who is responsible for the construction of
this memorial?
The memorial was designed by Don Baker and
associates, engineered by Jed Kirkland and
the Fort Peck office of Interstate Engineering,
constructed by Les and Larry Scanlan construction
of Fort Peck. The tiles and granite are provided by
Montana Granite in Great Falls. Dave Biggar with
help from Curt Clampitt and Ron Kulczyk installed
the tiles on the walls of honor. Pam Harr, Harvey
Rattey, and Mike Curtiss provided the sculptures.
Kari Aakre installed the irrigation, Gene Kolstad
and Norval Electric teamed up on the electrics and
Edwin Mogan put down the sod.
#15.) Our goal is to insure that all NE Montana
Veterans get included in our Walls Of Honor. We do
accept anonymous donations for tiles for forgotten
veterans, those without family or for any reason
cannot afford to purchase a tile.
#16.) How do I find a veteran on the Walls of Honor?
Alphabetical lists are available. We hope to have
a legend on our website veteransMT.org to assist
in locating tiles.

all 9 counties?
Yes.

The Womens Resource Center would like to extend a heartfelt

Thank-you to the Glasgow community along with surrounding
communities for donating food, clothing, and household items.
Those items are given to victims of domestic and sexual violence
along with families that are in need. The demand for donated food
and other items remains constant as requests from our valley county
residents seems to grow. Again, the WRC extends a huge Thank
you for all your support, donations and continued efforts to meet the
needs of victims and families here in Valley County.
In addition, the WRC is asking individuals with gardens
and fruit trees to consider donating any extra produce, fruits,
berries to the WRCs food pantry; which is held twice a month
on Fridays. WRC tries to ensure that our food baskets that are
given to our clients have a well balanced diet.
As always WRC truly appreciates all donations we receive.
